I think the internet is in a transitionary period where we have several different kinds of systems that are increasingly overlapped, and it's confusing.

If you think about a CMS, a Blog, a Forum, and a Wiki colaborative system -- the overlaps in functionality are tremendous.  And I have not yet seen any holistic solution that came even close to being satisfying.

Think about the DonationCoder forum where most of the content on this website comes from -- it's the most natural for us because most of what we do is interactive discussion.  I ended up building a custom "blog" thing for the forum that let me basically identify forum posts that get promoted to the chronological blog page -- which works reasonably well, but then it's not a truly full featured blog.

Blog comments and forum discussions are almost identical -- but they tend to be displayed differently because blog comment threads usually don't go on as long and aren't meant to have such rich formatting and content.

What about a wiki -- most wiki systems now have a way to have full discussions among users for each node -- again much like a forum discussion but again (like blogs) not intended to support such rich and lengthy discussion as a forum.  And again the organizational structure is completely different.

But we frequently find ourselves on the forum in situations where we'd like to have a more structured wiki like organization of information for certain things -- but usually that information was hashed out on the forum -- so what do we do -- strip it out and move it to a separate wiki where people usually never go? or duplicate it and then risk diverging non-updated versions?

Like I said I don't think anyone has come up with a great solution.. yet.. but i can't wait to see what it is.  I think eventually it has to take the form of a content system with different facets or ways to interact with the content -- as a blog, or as a forum or as a wiki -- but still be one repository of information.  I'm not sure exactly how that will look or work, but i'll know it when i see it.

I have a question for those who use whole-disk encryption:  Do the whole-disk encryption schemes only do their thing at boot time -- so if the system were to go into standby or hibernation, and wake up, would everything be decrypted and stay decrypted until next boot? or do you have an option to have a timeout period after a few hours when the encryption can kick in again, etc.

I ask because I thought it might be a nice coding snack to request if not -- something that for example forced a laptop to reboot after waking from standby if some action wasn't taken immediately afterwards.

strange -- can you identify any clues to when it doesn't apply an explicit rule? if you exit PT and restart it (or actually just go into options and then out of them it should have the same effect), does it *then* apply it?

Newsletter for September 27th, 2009
Codename "Slackers in September"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Well, September is almost over and it looks like this edition of the newsletter is going to make it onto the airwaves and into the imaginary newsstands just in time to avoid any major embarrassment.  It's actually been over 5 weeks since the last newsletter  -- way too long.  So this newsletter is packed to the gills with new interesting posts and website discoveries.  So without further ado let's get to it. --mouser

2. Your Participation Requested

We welcome everyone's participation on the forum, no matter what your level of computer knowledge or how long you've been a DC member. If you're still waiting to make your first post, see the links below for some good places to jump in.

3. Fun, Games and Amusements on the Web

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

4. Website Discoveries

What's new on the world wide web? What fun new sites have forum members discovered?  Let's find out..

5. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into to sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

6. Specific Software Discussion

This section of the newsletter draws attention to some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

7. Coding Snacks and Other DC Member Software

The Coding Snacks Section is where people can request small utilities to be coded while they wait.  Since the last newsletter we've had a *TON* of new requests that have been filled -- several forum members are on fire lately!  And there have been some really cool new tools developed.

8. Mouser's Applications

I hope you'll allow me to include in the newsletter some threads about my software.  There have been some really cool postings by DC forum members about new plugins and alias packs.  And if you are a plugin author please don't miss the new wiki that we set up which will hopefully make it easier to discover plugins.  Plus I got some help from a forum member who collected all of the known plugins and alias packs and we put them up as one big zip file for those who really want to jump right into FARR with both feet.

9. Developer's Corner

If you're not a developer, don't let the title of this section scare you away - there is likely something of interest to you here! It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active over the last month -- keep it up people!

10. Giveaways and Discounts in October

This week we have a fun giveaway and discount, on a duplicate file manager tool that we got an early preview of a while ago when the author stopped by DonationCoder to tell us about it.

11. News You Can Use

DC Member Ehtyar produces wonderful weekly summaries of important tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  A big hit on the forum.  We're still wondering how he keeps up the pace and when will he collapse from exhaustion?

Living Room / Re: The Pricelessware Scam (Alt.Comp.Freeware)
« Last post by mouser on September 27, 2009, 08:46 AM »
I agree with the locking of the thread at this time - the general approach we take to threads like this is make sure everyone has their chance to air their views a few times and then lock it if it looks like we are going in circles and likely to implode.

Bloss, I feel your frustration -- I don't think it's the case that no one here cares -- I think it's just that most of us aren't familiar enough with the details to be able to comment intelligently just yet -- but knowing this bunch we will be keeping an eye and ear open and sniffing around to see what we can learn.

And I think many of us are also feeling burned out by ACF, which seems to have a habit of causing people to go to war with each other, for reasons that are beyond me and unusual for a site focused on freeware.

Lastly let me address one issue that Bloss raised and disagree with something that App said:

app said:
Since this is primarily a donationware site, I don't think it would be likely that one of our applications would fall into the category of being able to be pirated in the way you describe..

My understanding of what Bloss is upset about is the idea that people are selling collections of freeware on cd, and making a real profit from the software created by freeware authors, without any of that money going to the software authors.

And I share that concern.  While some software authors don't care -- and for some software like mine that asks for donations explicitly or requires a free license key it wont matter.  For much of the free software on this site and other sites -- the idea that someone might be selling cds of the software and charging unsuspecting and unknowing people for it, who think they are paying the authors for their work but are really paying the cd burning people, this is upsetting.

But then the response from pricelessware seems to be that they are only charging nominal amounts for the effort involved in burning the cd, etc.  And if that's true, and they are making a good faith effort to explain clearly what they are charging for, then it doesn't seem to be unethical.

So in my opinion, where are now is:
  • There is a dispute about the practices and we should inform ourselves about them. I think Bloss for bringing the issue to our attention.
  • There doesn't seem to be much value in continuing the argument in this thread any longer, at least for now.

As was said above, not only is there not one person's opinion that decides these things, but none of the mods or admins here think they're any better than anyone else.. when push comes to shove sometimes someone has to pull the trigger and make decisions, but no one here feels like they are always going to be right, and we don't feel like we can't all have honest disagreements sometimes

there are probably some good general purpose file searching tools that are best for this and more powerful than farr when wanting to manipulate multiple search results.

General Software Discussion / Re: -Recklessly- remove hardware (from USB)
« Last post by mouser on September 27, 2009, 04:57 AM »
wait for the experts to chime in, but i believe the real danger in prematurely unplugging a USB device is if it's a USB storage device of some sort that you have written TO (reading from shouldn't pose any risk).

in this case -- what you have worry about is that the operating system may not have actually finished writing to the drive even though it looks for all intents and purposes like it has.

other than that, it's hard to think what harm could really be caused.
18212
what is "off-lease" ?
18213
One way to do this that would not require a separate laptop, would be to set this up as a virtual machine instead of on a physical device.
18214
Lately I've been thinking that the price of laptop/netbook PCs is cheap enough to warrant a dedicated "secure PC" in my house, and wanted to get some feedback and exchange ideas with others about this concept.

Essentially what i'm thinking is this:

  • The purpose of this PC would be to connect to my financial accounts (bank, creditcard, paypal), and to do logins on the servers (and websites) i work on that i have a dangerously high level of access to (ie root access, etc.)
  • It would be a PC for which security is the top most priority - with the absolute bare bones software installed on it, always kept fully updated religiously, left OFF most of the time, only connected to the web when needed.
  • No plain text passwords stored on it -- but instead a good encrypted password manager.
  • Might use full drive encryption so that even if stolen, the data would not be accessible.
  • This PC would not be used for general surfing, houseguest use, etc.

In summary, what i'm thinking is splitting off all of the things i do on my main PC that require a sensitive login, and putting those on a separate laptop PC which is used for no other purpose and would thus be much less likely to be vulnerable.

Thoughts?  Anyone else already do this?

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR Plugin: AMPL [beta version 0.5.1]
« Last post by mouser on September 27, 2009, 02:37 AM »
if you do decide to spend the time making the macro recording stuff easier and more integrated -- i think it does make the simple interface mode more attractive, since i think it might basically be something that macro-recorder users use -- people who aren't nesc. going to be proficient with AHK and would like a streamlined hand-holding way to manage macros.

Though STILL, im not sure you want to go through all the effort to make AMPL *both* a tool for super powerful complicated stuff as it is now, and also at the same time try to make a mode that is suitable for the most novice of users -- that's a tough nut to crack.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR Plugin: AMPL [beta version 0.5.1]
« Last post by mouser on September 27, 2009, 02:29 AM »
the one thought i had which might be worth cogitating on was this:

you've designed AMPL to be an extremely powerful thing for which a script can have multiple steps, and each step can launch an app, do windows operations, execute ahk code before and after, and react to results.

the user interface for this is absolutely fantastic -- gentle and powerful at the same time -- hard to ask for anything more.

---

i can also see people wanting to use AMPL for much simpler purposes, like just to help them write a simple ahk script they can search for and launch -- so one thought i had, and i have no idea if this is worth even considering, is whether it would make sense to have the AMPL script editor main window have like 2 tabs or an initial question about what kind of script you want to make. one for "Simple AHK Script" and one for "Multi-step Advanced Script".  Where the simple script would basically just be a single memo where one could edit AHK code and launch the macro recorder.  And the "Multi-step Advanced Script" interface would be what you have now.

the idea of the "Simple AHK Script" mode would be to present the user with the absolute minimalist options for their script (title, and memo editor to edit script, button for macro recorder launch?).

--

now having described that idea.. im not 100% sold on it myself, only because anyone who has the smarts to write an AHK script, could almost as easily just create and edit the .ahk file themselves with their own text editor and put it in their search directory path, and be able to search and launch it without using AMPL.

so.. i'm not sure it makes sense adding a simple mode to AMPL to do this.  just an idea.

so some obervations after following the tutorial, then creating my own macro and testing it.

for anyone who has been wanting a way to create more powerful scripts to do things from farr.. you now have your answer.

it's like a bridge that connects FARR and AUTOHOTKEY in a truly seamless way.  very very cool.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR Plugin: AMPL [beta version 0.5.1]

let me answer these:

    * Do people want AMPL to support different AHK macro recorders (ie one person wants one, and another wants another)?
AutoScriptWriter worked well enough for me.

    * Is there a specific macro recorder that is better than AutoScriptWriter?
don't know the answer to that.

* Do people want AMPL to record a macro before running ScriptEditor?
not sure what you mean -- but i don't have any problem with launching ASW to record a macro.

----

here's my only issue with the macro recording:

i think the macro recording has potential to be something people use plugin for.

but the copy and paste from ASW is a bit painful -- ASW doesnt have a button to copy all, and ctrl+A doesn't work, and when you save it wants you to save to a file, etc.  so it's a bit confusing.  not that an expert wouldn't learn what to do, just doesn't quite flow.

i don't know if there is a solution for this, except that IF there is another ahk utility that wraps ASW into a nicer interface that you could tweak to work more smoothly with AMPL that might be worth it (but NOT to the degree that it would make sense to work a lot on a custom macro recorder!).

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: License key does not work
« Last post by mouser on September 27, 2009, 02:07 AM »
most often the problem is what i said above -- the license key download page actually has links to download license keys for different programs -- and people just click on one of the links randomly, and end up with a license key for a different program.

so make sure when you go to the license key page (https://www.donation...r.com/Keys/index.php) that you click the link corresponding to the application you will put the license key into.

I have notices that as well, and its probably the browser cache.

What you can try to do is exit the browser completely and restart it, and/or hit ctrl+Refresh button on the page, to force the browser to redownload any files.

well you could imagine wanting to update the index that rapidly for some period of time while you were installing stuff, etc.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR Plugin: AMPL [beta version 0.5.1]
« Last post by mouser on September 26, 2009, 11:38 AM »
you know.. this very cool plugin immediately came to mind when someone on irc asked about the possibility of a farr plugin that could record and playback keyboard "Macros"..

i wonder if AMPL might be extended some day to support recording keyboard macros as ahk scripts.. the really cool part about this is that they could be easily edited later and AMPL already has all the infrastructure for searching and launching them.. and i wonder if another ahk coder hasn't already made such a macro recording ahk script that could be used.
18224
Like i said, lot's of room for different tools for different tastes.  i'm also always happy to hear when people find features they like that they would like to see added to mine (for those stumbling onto this thread from a search: Find and Run Robot).

However, I am skeptical about correcting for typos -- as i've written about here, i find that when programs try to be "smart" and guess what you mean when you make a mistake, the results can often be problematic.  Not to say it's not a useful feature just that i'm always wary about such things.

I think everyone has had their say now, and clearly this is something that people feel strongly about on both sides -- but i do think it's been hashed out as much as can be done from over here in the land of DonationCoder and we can should back to our regularly scheduled stuff now..
