I have Windows 8 Pro, but has not installed it because the Microsoft Upgrade Adviser said No!
Interesting -

Sorry, I was of course exaggerating. The adviser said that because my machine doesn't have this and that technique, upgrading would make me miss this and that feature, merely.

---------------
re-edit: re-reading the advice, I (again) think it said No. The lack of "NX" is vital, isn't it?

I am pleased that I took the introduction offer just in time!

While UEFI+SB might be a requirement to get the "designed for windows 8" certification, Win8 works just perfectly without SecureBoot, and it doesn't need UEFI either, works fine with BIOS booting.

-thanks, 40hz.
I re-edited my initial text right before posting because I suddenly felt too pettiness minded. My first post included these sentences of mine:

">even if you only ever plan to< is not proper use of the word "ever"! I have several translation programs to back up my accusation, because none of them will translate the quoted sentence the way it was intended by the original author. Not one of them!

-but then I deleted it, because I felt I was pouring water over a goose. I guess I still am.  ;D

it doesnt win any prizes for accessibility :)

My problem was with the sentence: >even if you only ever plan to run Windows<.
1) It is very clumsy English.
2) A computer can officially only run Windows 8 if it has the very same "new UEFI secure boot platform",
so it doesn't matter what else I might be planning, if my plans included Win 8

The free office suite the community has been dreaming of for twelve years

Berlin, February 7, 2013 – The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 4.0, the free office suite the community has been dreaming of since 2001. LibreOffice 4.0 is the first release that reflects the objectives set by the community at the time of the announcement, in September 2010: a cleaner and leaner code base, an improved set of features, better interoperability, and a more diverse and inclusive ecosystem.

PLEASE NOTE that, since this is the very first version in the series, make sure to read the release notes!

LibreOffice 4.0: a community on fire

In less than 30 months, LibreOffice has grown dramatically to become the largest independent free software project focused on end user desktop productivity. TDF inclusive governance and the copyleft license have been instrumental in attracting more than 500 developers – three quarters of them being independent volunteers – capable of contributing over 50,000 commits.

The resulting code base is rather different from the original one, as several million lines of code have been added and removed, by adding new features, solving bugs and regressions, adopting state of the art C++ constructs, replacing tools, getting rid of deprecated methods and obsoleted libraries, and translating twenty five thousand lines of comments from German to English.

Owning your Windows 8 UEFI Platform

Even if you only ever plan to run Windows or stock distributions of Linux that already have secure boot support, I’d encourage everybody who has a new UEFI secure boot platform to take ownership of it.
 :-[
Most of the time English is understandable to me, but not always. The sentence "Even if you only ever plan to run Windows" (etcetera), may be straight forward to you, but it surely isn't straight nor forward to me. Is he trying to say something similar to "if you run Windows 8, take ownership of the boot section"?

General Software Discussion / Re: WinPatrol Plus or AnVir Task Manager?
« Last post by Curt on February 17, 2013, 02:28 AM »
-thank you, Joe Hone, for your fine mini-review'ish review, though I don't agree with you in your last conclusion. I have a few lifetime keys for Bill's WP+, and I think they were ridiculous cheap to buy, but AnVir is the one I have kept using, because it is so much easier for me to understand how to use.

For maybe half a year, I too ran both of them at the same time, but I got tired of the many popup questions (I used to trial MANY programs), so I removed WP+. Now I think I don't need it any more.

BTW: 4 years for $31.96 today

*** Great News! AnVir Software has agreed to extend this deal for another day - Enjoy! ***

Have you seen Shaun of the Dead
+1 - That was GREAT! I loved it!

Was it a sequel? I liked Shaun better when he still was alive: movies.netflix.com/ShauntheSheep

-------
Chance was the Danish title of Being There. Perfect Book, and great Movie, but as tomos said, it has been quite a while, so a re-view is needed :-)

Shane - The Silent Rider was a fav' book of my youth, and I still like the movie version big time as well:

GARP is an all time favourite as well, both as book and as moving pictures. The beginning of the film version The World According to Garp was extra wonderful:

-----------
Several Danish, Swedish, and other not-English films as well. But what's the point in telling you about Ein Mann Geht Durch Die Wand, or Carl Th. Dreyer's Ordet, or ... or? As tomos said, that was then, how is it today? I haven't seen those two films in fourty years, and maybe it is for the best to not re-view them. The German one wasn't "great", but we analysed it in class, making it mean something to us. A film really doesn't have to be "great", (as proven by some of your lists!), it is more important if it appeals to something in you, I think.

Welcome to DC, evamaria, where the forum of course will be pleased to help you, if possible, but you might also try http://superuser.com...hortcuts-currently-i or in one of their linked articles, or maybe post at http://www.bleepingc...me-and-professional/

Meanwhile, you could try to overwrite the unwanted key: http://qliner.com/hotkeys/
QLiner has been abandoned for some years, but it suits XP just fine :-)

How to fix the UPnP security holes Universal Plug and Play has always had security holes. Here's how to plug them. http://www.zdnet.com...ity-holes-7000010584
thanks for that - unfortunately, it sounds like you've got to be pretty much an expert to figure this stuff out :(
-exactly my thought as well. So I wrote Agnitum, because:
So what can you do in the meantime? Just keep that firewall up once and for all against UPnP traffic.
-ZDNet
We've survived UPnP until now, maybe all this is not extremely urgent... I hope for an answer no later than Monday.

I forgot to post the answer:

Your PC is protected by Outpost default rules:
(Settings - Application rules - svchost.exe - Network rules - block UPnP rule (1900 UDP))

Unfortunately,  Outpost  can´t protect routers as it protects only the PC where the product is installed.

General Software Discussion / Re: ScreenShot Capture question
« Last post by Curt on February 10, 2013, 12:15 PM »
-oh, sorry! Only now do I see how ambiguous my previous answer is. Yes, startup managers will certainly offer to delay this or that program. My "no" was about saving time. Startup managers really don't save you time, unless you tell it to delay several programs quite a lot, like tomos hinted.

Chameleon Startup Manager Pro is the one I use. Even today I upgraded to version 4 Beta.

Got any suggestions for a start up manager?
-BeehindBlueyes (February 09, 2013, 11:32 PM)

-not now. Your requirements may differ from mine. If you search our forum thoroughly you can find several threads about startup managers and their pro & cons. But it has been a while, so data may be outdated by now.

I am thinking that if I can delay some of the programs, like the screen capture, from starting up as soon as the computer starts, then maybe it will start up a bit faster. Will a start up manager do that?
-BeehindBlueyes (February 09, 2013, 11:32 PM)

-no, it won't:

But to understand what a startup manager really is, you must first forget about the "Reduce Boot Times"-nonsense. A startup manager is about having control and stability, even if the price actually is longer boot times!

Good luck!

welcome to the forum, BeehindBlueyes.

You make it sound as if you may prosper from a startup manager. Not that such will make your computer start any faster, but it will make certain that everything is being launched in a speed your computer can handle. You can then also add Screenshot Captor to the startup manager, and this way make sure it is ready when your Internet browser is opening.

It was inspiring but also quite overwhelming to study the opportunities Common Craft gives.

But given professional software prices in general, I can think of no easier way than to pay the $159 (for a one-man, non-profit org), because this include for them to make you "Become an explanation specialist" - and I expect they also then must tell you a lot about the involved techniques and programs. But of course this is hazard; they might keep their cards close to them selves.

But a very interesting concept.
