Ya know, the board of directors wanted to fire Opera's CEO, and Jon von Tetzchner fired them ;D

Well, that's some good news, they must be feeling the pressure of Internet-only media... Do you still have to register to read some content or will be open as well?

At least you extracted some conclusions of 25 pages of discussion... something that superboyac (I think) couldn't achieve through the thread. Well, I have seen +1000 pages threads, so let's keep going for some other 25 :)

So two lessons can be learned from this:

1) Windows viruses work in every edition of Windows without compatibility modes, registry and file redirection, etc., or maybe it's that Windows is specifically designed to be compatible with all kinds of viruses ;)

2) That one of my fears became true: Old viruses are not always detected by antivirus software. Maybe the guys in the security industry should learn some lessons from the colleagues at scientific institutions, who refuse to destroy smallpox for serious reasons.

Ah, OK, now I understand what you're saying :). The Wikipedia sheds some light over the issue of the protocols. Let's see what the imminent Miranda 0.7 brings to the table in terms of support for the protocol.

General Software Discussion / Re: help me find an old videogame's music
« Last post by Lashiec on September 17, 2007, 07:23 PM »
Nastar is the second part of Rastan, "Nastar" is the worldwide name. "Nastar Warrior" is the name used in the USA and "Rastan Saga 2" is the Japanese name. The third part is that "Warrior Blade" I linked in my previous post.

Rastan is named either "Rastan" or "Rastan Saga" (only in Japan).

There are better tools to hear the music in Nastar without going through the hassle of ripping and editing WAVs from MAME. In fact, the MAME sound core provides everything. So if you can't find the MP3 (or similar codec) soundtrack (two OST were published, although I suspect they're only available either in sites dedicated to game music or in the "dark corners" of tha Interweb), I'll provide you the tools.

Interesting enough, the shortcuts in the Spanish version are like the ones in the English one... Hmmm, but well, the issue you mention also happens with Windows, and some "localized" apps. I think they should standardize these kind of things.

No public specs (did Microsoft publish something like that in the past?) and little documentation from "alternative sources". The maintainer of the MSN plugin said that every feature of MSN8 took some time for him to implement, but that was in May... I think the MSN protocol is at version 15 now. Oh well... at least it doesn't support winks, that's a BIG plus ;D

Ahem, well, the thing that we used to call Scandisk :)

A friend told me a few days ago that Vista has this background defragging feature, so that's maybe why they removed all MMC-related code, and left a barebones version. Oh, well, we have JKDefrag anyway :D

General Software Discussion / Re: New interesting features for Firefox 3

Well, Trident is really slow compared to Gecko and Presto, but I'm fairly impressed with the browser as a whole (the GUI looks fast to me). They really fixed their way since IE6, and implemented nice features like QuickTabs. It really needs some work in the layout engine, and a redesign of the options screen (a mere paint job won't hide its defects), but overall it's a improvement from the previous version. Some people even changed from Firefox 2 to IE7 (yes, I'm also surprised).

During my test, IE7 proved to be fairly reliable under XP, although it crashed quite a bit more than Firefox and Opera (and, unlike those two, it does not have a "Restore session upon crash" feature). And defrag, how does it work without meters? Like Scandisk in XP?

Let me try my hand at it. Rastan? Warrior Blade? Nastar? The Astyanax?

You have my helping hand as well. It's a pity you are releasing the client so late, because next week I could have the computer on almost 24/7 (minus my sleeping time). But I think I can talk with my friends for helping, if they get into pyramidal scams so easily, I can trick them to do something valuable for a change, while they try to bring down intellectual properties organizations, and most of them have the computer(s) always on.

Didn't you consider GPU clients? I understand the the number crunching power of a graphic card is far greater than the one of a CPU. And if someone has a PlayStation 3, it would be even better. Also, another thing that you could do is trying to talk with some Folding team, like The Tech Report one, those guys have full offices running the client nonstop, so they could bring great time savings.

EDIT: D'oh! What a typo! :-[

2 GB seems to be the trend, as that's what I have here. It's advisable to buy that extra stick, now that RAM price is pretty low.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Problem using Screenshot Captor for games
« Last post by Lashiec on September 15, 2007, 03:34 PM »
It's better for you to use FRAPS, as most games obscure the screenshot grabbing key (I don't know why). Either that, or you run the game windowed and you grab the shot using the tray menu of Screenshot Captor. That should work most of the times.

I should make a quick note about this essay. The relationship of a person with its job varies from person to person, but you can classify people in two groups: those who work for a living, and those who live to work. The essay is directed at the latter, as most people, even programmers, don't go nuts like the article is saying. I would go even further and say this is specific for the hacker community, not the modern hacker, but those ones in the 70s who spent tons of hours in antediluvian computers tweaking up to the most specific detail (and designing terrible GUIs :D), as I detected some ideas that seem to be recurrent in Eric S. Raymond written work (that is, I read some of the things mentioned in the essay in another place ;)).

That's all. Oh, it seems I'm a ENFJ, although that test was quite of short sighted for me, as all the answers were either black or white, no middle point, so I cheated (sort of) in some of them :D

One more thing (oh man, I'm quoting Steve Jobs). As app says, obsession with perfection is not necessarily related with programming. I'm quite picky about how to do things this or the other way, my room is neatly arranged and if someone moves something I'll go mad (well, almost)... but my medium brother or my mother are even worse (particularly the former, it's almost sickening), I'm a bit in the middle point between my parents stance about perfection. Also, lots of programmers are known for their careless attitude to perfection outside code.

EDIT: Rephrasing and some clarifications

Living Room / Re: Before I head to the computer shop... (Memory slot problem)
« Last post by Lashiec on September 15, 2007, 09:32 AM »
Well, the RAM slots do have lots of contacts, and if one fails, everything goes nuts. So that's why you have to ensure they're properly connected, even if you have to use a hammer to do that. My old computer sometimes beep on startup complaining about no present RAM sticks. A reset usually solves the problem.

Just for you to laugh a bit, one teacher told us he had a AMD Athlon CPU in one computer which rebooted itself when he launched Photoshop. One day he was disassembling this computer, and found that the CPU was having these problems because of one the pins was bent, so it seems Photoshop somehow used a certain functionality only accessible via that pin. Who knows? Computers are so unpredictable...

EDIT: The word was bent, not torn :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Size of Download in Firefox??
« Last post by Lashiec on September 15, 2007, 09:14 AM »
Firefox is ridiculously extensible. The only thing capable of being even more ridiculous is the same extensions. You can brand the "About" window with the FC Barcelona football team (W-T-F), you can transform the browser in a file manager (!) and you can know the water level of German rivers (!?), but you can't (or no one is bothering to do a extension for that) show the size of a file in the f******* download dialog. This is one of the things that made me rant the other day about the ludicrous state of Firefox addons, anyone can make the most stupid extension ever and have it hosted in the official site (!?), but when it comes to real needs, you're all alone >:(

OK, after the angry rant, I'll simply say that I have searched back and forth the web and didn't find anything else. If someone finds or codes something, I'll give him/her a cookie ;D. Either that, or we'll have to wait 'til ¿Firefox 3?

EDIT: I think I've found a solution to use the Opera addon I talked about earlier. There's this extension for Firefox, Launchy, that lets you launch any element in a web page in an external application. What's more, it lets you define your own programs using an XML file, you can find the details at the extension webpage. Read the FAQ of the other addon to see how it works with Opera, as you can use the same commandline (I think you won't need any arguments, only the path to the addon), and let me know if it works :)
