General Software Discussion / Re: Modern forum software: Discourse
« Last post by Deozaan on June 28, 2017, 12:15 PM »
I thought there was not a single human in the universe that thought that the 'old guard forums' were better than Discourse.

For what it's worth, I think I'd prefer Discourse over SMF.

I say think because DC is pretty much the only place on the internet that I regularly participate in the forums, so I have very little, if any, actual experience with Discourse. But it looks nice and useful to me.

Seems like this answers the question as to why it wasn't taught as a type of cloud:

According to the WMO International Cloud Atlas, mamma is a cloud supplementary feature rather than a genus, species or variety of cloud.

Hmm... I remember learning about the various kinds of clouds in grade school. But I don't recall them mentioning mammatocumulus. Or maybe I was too young at the time to know about or make the connection to mammaries and my teacher neglected to point it out. I only remember a couple of the clouds we learned about, and I'm sure knowing one was named after "boobies" would have made it much more memorable to an immature ~8-10 year old's mind.

this could just as easily have gone in the 'Interesting' thread - only some timelapse footage in it (at least I think it's timelapse).

For what it's worth, in my opinion this video would belong better in the Silly Humor thread. There seemed to be some timelapse in the video, but it also seemed equally non-timelapsed. But it's fine here. :)

I'd recommend the Dark Souls games. I've only played through the first 2 games (and Demon's Souls on PS3, which Dark Souls is kind of a spiritual continuation of), and don't know a lot about the plot of the 3rd game (I'm waiting for a more agreeable price on the 3rd game with all DLC included). But here's my take on the series:

These games are probably most well-known for their difficulty. The developers know this all too well: The first game's PC release is subtitled as the Prepare to Die Edition. And while they are, or can be, very difficult at times, in my opinion, that's not the main draw to the games. I'd say that the lore is the best thing about the games. (And the level design, especially of DS1, is really amazing!)

A quick note about the difficulty: The game allows different playstyles which can affect the difficulty. Generally speaking, ranged or magic use is "easier" than melee combat. But if you find something that just seems impossibly difficult, then that is probably the game giving you a hint that you should not be there yet or you're doing something wrong. For example, if you are finding it impossibly difficult because the area is too dark to see anything, that should be a clue to find a light source (torch, lantern, magic spell, etc.) you can use to improve visibility. This video explains it well:

Now onto the story:

Kinda vague lore spoilers ahead.

I don't know how to explain it, but the story that is told--piece by piece, clue by clue--is probably one of the most defeatist, depressing, Sisyphean, nihilistic stories I've ever come across. Put quite simply, there are no happy endings in Dark Souls. And this is true for you as the player as well as for essentially every NPC you encounter or hear about. All odds are stacked against you, guaranteeing that ultimately, the "antagonist" of the story (the curse, or the flame, depending on how you look at it) will have its desired outcome. And yet, you and many others persist in trying to overcome the curse.

There's something beautifully melancholy about the sheer willpower behind mankind's persistent struggle to overcome hardship and trials, all in an effort to bring about a better life for themselves and those they care about. Even if, or especially when, it seems (or is!) utterly hopeless.

The lore is amazing. And tragic. And though virtually everybody in the lore eventually succumbs to the curse, becoming Hollow, there's also something that feels almost triumphant about the valor and persistence exemplified by many of the characters. Solaire, Siegmeyer, and Lucatiel are obvious favorites.

And again, like the game itself, where much of it is optional and easily missed (if not outright deviously hidden from the player), much of this story is only hinted at and has to be puzzled out, piece by piece. A lot of the lore is told or hinted at through items you find. When you pick up an item, read its description as soon as it is safe to do so. Think about what it is, where you found it, why it would be there, and what that could mean about the world you're in.

End of spoilers

If the idea of playing through it all yourself doesn't appeal to you, but you're curious about the story, then I'd recommend a few YouTube channels for you:

For a Let's Play-esque playthrough with incredibly deep discussion of the lore throughout almost every stage of the game, see EpicNameBro's channel.

Dark Souls 1 Playthrough & Lore
Dark Souls 2 Playthrough & Lore

For short videos on the lore of specific characters or events, see VaatiVidya's channel, specifically the "Prepare to Cry" videos. That said, some of the lore might not be as meaningful without the context of encountering the characters yourself in the game. Also, he doesn't go into the lore of every character, so there's a lot missing. One thing to keep in mind about the lore videos is that because the story is mostly only hinted at, much of it is speculation and left up to the reader/player to interpret. And some of the information presented in these videos turned out to be wrong according to the canon that came in later games.

Dark Souls 1 Lore
Dark Souls 2 Lore

I didn't link videos to Dark Souls 3 content because I haven't personally watched it yet (trying to avoid spoilers until I play through it).

Buy Dark Souls, git gud, and praise the sun! \[T]/

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is $20 (for some reason it isn't discounted in this sale).
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (which contains all the DLC) is currently $12 (70% off).
Dark Souls III: Deluxe Edition (which contains all the DLC) is currently $42.50 (50% off).

Greenlight (which has recently been discontinued)

Doesn't look like so much a discontinuing as a change to vet the offerings better with Steam Direct.

Yeah. Pretty much. They've discontinued (retired) Greenlight and replaced it with Steam Direct. Same basic idea (allow almost anybody the chance to get on Steam) but the details of how it works are fairly significantly different to help reduce abuse of the system and reduce low-effort submissions.

It's summer, and that means another Steam summer sale!

Aside from the nice discounts on many games, Steam is also running a promotion where you can do a few "quests" each days to earn sticker packs. I don't really see the point of the stickers or sticker packs, but I guess they know all about how driven people are by worthless digital collections.

Speaking of worthless digital collections, you can also earn Steam Summer Sale Trading Cards through various activities on your Steam account during the sale.

But anyway, I've been using Steam less and less over the past few years, mostly because of the glut of crap that has gotten on the storefront through Greenlight (which has recently been discontinued), and also because I've begun to appreciate the value in DRM-free games more and more (hooray for GOG!). That said, it might be fun if people use this thread as an opportunity to recommend good games to each other that are worth picking up during the sale.

I would think that since the rest of the post is the actual doing of that, one could overlook that word's inclusion.  :P

Programmers aren't often in the habit of overlooking semantic details. In fact, they are highly trained to seek them out. This is how you bug-hunt.  :P

I can't recall what it's from. All the smart Linux geeks (of which group I do not claim to be a part of) I know are familiar with it. It might be a standard Linux command/tool which is combined with regex.

I've seen people use it for years in the IRC channel, and from context I learned to just think of it as saying, in the example of "s/this/that", "switch this for that." So I've used it from time to time as well, not knowing anything of its origin. I only recently learned it was from something specific, which as I said, I think is Linux-centric.

Edvard would know what it's from. I'm sure f0dder would, too. :)

I came to the conclusion that tabs are better because they give more choice to each individual.

The reason I use spaces is for exactly this reason.  Consistency in code, as you can set the tab to be anything, and get unusual alignment when using tabs.

I'm not sure I follow you. How does using spaces give more choice to each individual? And how does it provide any more consistency in code than tabs do?

One tab-width indentation is always exactly as wide as you've configured it to appear to you. You can't get any more consistent than that.

But once you decide to use spaces, then you have to determine how many spaces to use per indentation block. Some people prefer 2 spaces. Some (most, I think) prefer 4. Some do weird things like 3 or 6 or even 8! And if you're working on a project with someone (or with a library written by someone else) who prefers a different amount of spaces than you, you no longer have consistency. One or both of you needs to compromise and submit to the others' spacing preference.

With tabs you can just use tabs, and configure your IDE to display it how you want it to appear to you. And others can configure how they want it to appear to them. Everybody wins. It's the most accessible and friendly way to get it to look how you want it to look and to allow others the same privilege, even if all parties disagree on what looks best to them.

In summary:
  • Spaces are dictatorial in that they enforce your preference on others, whether they like it or not.
  • Tabs allow each individual the freedom (and responsibility!) to configure it to appear in whichever way pleases them most.

That said, if VCS doesn't properly handle tabs (which hasn't been my experience) then that's not the fault of the tabs. It's the fault of the crappy version control software (or GUI client written for the VCS).

In practice, it doesn't really matter to me which I use. But I'm still of the opinion that tabs are The Better WayTM since they allow the most freedom for everyone involved to view the code how it looks best to them.

It means, "replace 'pros' with 'skiddies'" which I believe means script kiddies.
1815
I was taught to use spaces, and had done so for years. But then a couple of years ago I actually thought about it instead of just dogmatically accepting what I was taught and I came to the conclusion that tabs are better because they give more choice to each individual.

But that's for my code on my projects. If I were doing a group project where the lead maintainer or whatever had coding style guidelines insisting to use spaces, I'd happily use spaces on that project.

It doesn't really matter to me, but it seems ideal to let each person decide their preferences for how much to indent a line with the configurable-width tab rather than force your preference on others by using spaces.

Which is not to imply that people who prefer spaces also do so only because that's what they were taught and never applied critical thought to it. I'm just saying that, at least for now, I'm convinced that using tabs is superior to using spaces. And I'm not aware of any argument or reason why spaces are objectively better than tabs for indentation.

Unless, I suppose, if you count people using spaces making more money as an objective reason spaces are better than tabs.

This might be useful: Print Management/Auditing software was the cause of the missing text issue.

After Ath's confirmation of my suspicions I did a bit more searching and found this discussion on the SpiceWorks forum talking about Printer management/auditing software being the cause of the missing text ... And indeed it was for us also. Specifically HP's JetAdvantage Print Scout service.

Now how many other of this type of software is/will/can cause problems I don't know ... But it's definitely something to look into.

That's really interesting because I rarely use my printer but noticed that the Creator's Update made all my computers forget how to interact with it, requiring me to set it up/install printer drivers again.

At first my primary computer stopped being able to print. Then a couple weeks later the other computer stopped being able to print. I didn't notice the connection at first between CU and the breakage because:

1. It was a few weeks after I installed CU on my primary PC before I first tried printing anything from that computer.
2. I installed CU on both computers several weeks apart, so the 2nd PC still hadn't been updated when the 1st PC's printing broke. Then when the 2nd PC got updated and the printing broke I made the connection.

So it seems the update breaks things having to do with printers.

DC member p3lb0x has an extra game key for Wasted and is willing to give it away to someone who would make use of it.

I have the key to hand out to the first person to ask for it, under the following conditions:

  • You must be an established member of DonationCoder.

That's it, really.

It's a humble bundle key, which I believe is redeemable on Steam.

Living Room / Re: Why Running May Be Good for Your Back
« Last post by Deozaan on June 08, 2017, 03:02 PM »
It makes sense to me, following this logic:

Our bodies have ways of coping with frequent, repeating stressors. For example, our hands and feet develop calluses to protect them from wear and tear. Many minor "injuries" lead to the hands becoming hardened and more resistant to the effects. But people who don't use their hands in such a way don't develop these calluses.

I'd guess it's a similar thing with our backs. If you run regularly, you repeatedly and frequently "injure" your back in minor ways, so the body compensates by making stronger discs, etc.

Along with the "motion is lotion" saying could be added: "If you don't use it, you lose it."

Thanks for sharing the article about the woes that plagued Andromeda's development.

An old internet friend somewhat randomly started chatting with me this past March after several months of us not really being in contact with each other. As part of our conversation, he said he was excited for the upcoming release of Andromeda. I'd not even heard of it before that. I thought the series ended with some finality in Mass Effect 3. (I've only ever played the first, and never quite finished it.)

So, as I said, I found it interesting to hear about Andromeda's long and troubled development.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ath.

After trying to figure it out a bit more and getting those CRC errors, I've decided that the CD itself (or just that final image) is corrupted, and I've told the owner to try to get a new, working copy from the original source.

I'm no longer trying to figure out the problem, and no further troubleshooting is required. Thanks to everyone who helped, especially those in IRC who really pitched in with ideas and potential solutions.

Interesting article.

There's also some insight to be gained from a video that came out about a month ago from Extra Frames (a pseudo-spin-off of Extra Credits) which talked about the animation problems with Andromeda:

Tried using robocopy and xcopy on the final image but got CRC errors.

But here's another mystery that makes me question whether or not that "final" image is actually the final image:

The 3 images I see show as being about 9-11MB each. The PDF shows as being <1MB. That should be about 30MB total. 40MB being very generous. So why does Windows tell me the CD used up 72MB? Is it possible there are other photos on the CD that aren't being shown to me?

OK, we've made some progress.

I had originally booted into a Linux Live CD because I didn't know what was on the CD and wanted to make sure it didn't give me any viruses. And also because in my experience, Linux will often show you useful information when Windows refuses to. So I popped the CD into my Windows PC after failing to make any progress on Linux, and it opened right up!

It shows three images and one PDF. I was able to copy the PDF and two of the images, but the CD seems to get stuck about 50% through with copying the final image.

Windows shows that the contents of the CD take up about 72MB and the filesystem of the CD is UDF. Which all sounds very standard to me.

But I'm having a lot of trouble getting that final image to copy off the CD.
