Living Room / Google being jerks in order to dominate the internet
« Last post by mouser on December 18, 2018, 07:59 AM »
From https://arstechnica....should-worry-us-all/

The company has "tried to push the Web into a Google-controlled proprietary direction to improve the performance of Google's online services when used in conjunction with Google's browser, consolidating Google's market positioning and putting everyone else at a disadvantage."

YouTube has been a particular source of problems. One example Peter provides has to do with a hidden, empty HTML element that was added to each YouTube video to disable Edge's hardware accelerated video decoding: "For no obvious reason, Google changed YouTube to add a hidden, empty HTML element that overlaid each video. This element disabled Edge's fastest, most efficient hardware accelerated video decoding. It hurt Edge's battery-life performance and took it below Chrome's. The change didn't improve Chrome's performance and didn't appear to serve any real purpose; it just hurt Edge, allowing Google to claim that Chrome's battery life was actually superior to Edge's. Microsoft asked Google if the company could remove the element, to no avail."

LaunchBar Commander / Re: An oddity

Hmm, please do remind me what LBC issues there are..

Normally you can set a custom hotkey to show or hide a dock..  The Ctrl+Shift+Alt+L is a global hotkey for LBC to bring up its options -- sometimes useful if LBC is somehow off screen due to a monitor change.

Developer's Corner / Re: Anyone used protocol buffers?

JSON is the lightweight format I am more familiar with.  Here's a blog post arguing for protobuffers over json:

Developer's Corner / Anyone used protocol buffers?
« Last post by mouser on December 16, 2018, 05:10 AM »
Again suggested to me by real life friend and previous DC server admin, Gothic:

Protocol Buffers, from google:

https://developers.g...om/protocol-buffers/

"Protocol buffers are Google's language-neutral, platform-neutral, extensible mechanism for serializing structured data – think XML, but smaller, faster, and simpler. You define how you want your data to be structured once, then you can use special generated source code to easily write and read your structured data to and from a variety of data streams and using a variety of languages."

Looks quite nice -- and lighter weight in all ways than xml.

Developer's Corner / Anyone tried the Godot game/graphics library engine?
« Last post by mouser on December 16, 2018, 03:15 AM »
Old dc server admin and real life friend Gothic was telling me about the open source cross-platform Godot programming game/graphics library/engine: https://godotengine.org

Anyone tried it yet? It looks pretty neat.

Looks like it good 2d support as well as 3d.

« Last post by mouser on December 15, 2018, 09:21 AM »
It real is no big deal but when I move the mouse from one PC/Monitor to the other, LC is launched on the PC/Monitor losing focus.

Are you saying that just moving the mouse between monitors causes LaunchBar Commander to display, or are you saying that when you bring up LBC it's on the wrong monitor?

Screenshot Captor / Re: DC Archive
« Last post by mouser on December 13, 2018, 09:08 AM »
An alternative to turning it off would be to change the # of days in that option where screenshots are considered "old" from 7 to something like 365 -- then only really old screenshots will be moved into the old archive.

I've never played around with this feature (I have archive turned off), but instead of a pattern, I assume that you could put an explicit name there like ArchivedScreenshots?

Yeah if you just put a folder name with no date time patterns, all older files will go into that one big directory.

Hi Andrea.

By default all screenshots are put in a single Screenshots folder when they are taken.

Are you talking about the optional feature that files OLDER screenshots away into subfolders?

If so, you can customize how older screenshots are filed, by going to the "Saving and Loading Files" tab, and look for "Auto Move Older Screenshots".

For example, the following setting will file old screenshots away in one subdirectory per month of the year:

The latest version of my checklist DC app will let you quickly toggle between viewing all, only checked, or only unchecked..  You can also organize items into tabs so you can easily switch between different groups of items.

My print screen button on the keyboard does not trigger a capture.

If you are talking about Screenshot Captor, you might also want to see here for what might be stealing the PrtScr button:

It's just a standard scam, pretending to have video of you doing something bad, or access to your computer.  They write these emails all the time to everyone on the planet.  They haven't hacked your computer, it's all just bulllshit. Just ignore it.

If anyone really hacked into your pc and/or had video and wanted you to know it and pay them, they would ransomware your files so you couldn't get at them and send you the video.

In short, if you or anyone else gets emails like this claiming to have got some info on you, just ignore it.

ps. ital2, some of your posts are looking like spam on first glance.. Please try to do a better job of posting a relevant topic title that describes what you are facing, and start the topic out in a way that is easier to understand what you are writing about.  Otherwise one of us moderators might ban you thinking you are a spammer!

It seems the previous release (4.31.1) could throw an exception in certain unusual circumstances regarding a disconnected remote printer.. The new version fixes that.
1819
The problem was the new version asks Windows for the name of the current (default) printer.  It seems that that function call can throw an exception, and I wasn't testing for that.  That error was the exception, it probably happens if your current printer is a network printer that is offline, or something like that.  Now I check for an exception being thrown and just don't use the new feature of displaying the current printer name in the menus.

I've uploaded a new version to fix the bug, hopefully it didn't hit too many folks.
1820
Can you try making two new directories for the new version portable, and old version portable.  In both cases dont put a screenshotcaptor.ini file in there on the first run so they both start with default directories.
I didn't make any change to the program that I can imagine could be causing this problem, so I'm still guessing it has something to do with where it thinks its trying to store your data files or screenshot files.

Anyone else having this problem?

OH wait I can think of one change that COULD be responsible.. the code that gets the default printer name!!!!

I'm guessing your default printer is unavailable or a network printer of some sort, etc.

IainB, I've sent you a link to a beta version.  Let me know how it works for you.  If it still gives error I'll remove the code.
1821
I'm having a hard time imagining why you would get that error with Screenshot Captor.. and you're saying reverting to prior version works? That is bizarre.  Anyone else?
Are you using some kind of network mapped drive? Or maybe some antivirus program doing something weird..
1822
I was wondering: do you sit down at some stage and start trawling dc to find relevant threads, or do you keep an ongoing record of possible candidate threads between newsletters?

I wrote a script that shows me all new posts in each forum section since the last newsletter, in a format suitable for copy+paste into newsletter, but there is still a lot of manual labor involved in checking links, pruning, reorganizing them into appropriate newsletter sections, etc.

Post New Requests Here / Re: KodeZwerg Logo needed
« Last post by mouser on December 05, 2018, 04:41 PM »
A couple more things that might be relevant:
  • What size or aspect ratio are you looking for (wide, square, etc.)?  A large size can always be reduces, but changing the aspect ratio can be an issue.
  • Are you looking for a transparent logo that you can put on top of a background, or a non-transparent rectangle?
  • In many cases, having the text be editable can be important, by using a graphics program that allows text layers, or leaving text off the image and letting it be added after.

One last thing.. It really is nice to see replies to the newsletters, and get some encouragement about them.  For whatever reason, it's not my favorite thing to do so every bit of positive reinforcement helps!
