I thought CoLT only did one at a time.  Can it cope with a whole page at once?

@Darwin:  I thought afterwards that my teasing was excessive, so thanks for taking it in good part.  After all, it was like the pot calling the kettle black!   :-[

If anyone upgrades to Boxer 14, please will they report their views on it?

I recall another couple of things about Boxer 13.  I didn't much like its bookmarking system.  It's one of the ones which give you ten numbered bookmarks.  Boxer can edit multiple files, those bookmarks could be spread out between them, and a clever little menu showed you where they all were, but I thought just ten was stingy for an editor of Boxer's calibre.  Worse, I didn't like having to remember what the numbers meant.  NoteTab Pro, the editor I'm using most at the moment, is another with just ten numbered bookmarks.  I prefer the system used by numerous other editors, e.g. Notepad++ and Crimson Editor, where you can (apparently) have as many as you like, toggled on and off by a hotkey, usually Ctrl-F2.  Another hotkey, usually F2, jumps between bookmarks in a circular queue.  HippoEdit, if I remember correctly, uses both systems at once.

The other thing about Boxer 13 it uses its own File Open dialogue.  It's much better than Windows standard one, but probably isn't going to be compatible with things like FileBox eXtender.  I think it was developed before they were.  It's an interesting feature, but it's a pity if it isn't compatible.

General Software Discussion / Firefox extension to copy plain text with URLs?
« Last post by rjbull on March 04, 2010, 05:23 PM »
Please, does anyone know of a Firefox extension to copy plain text with URLs in one go?  What I mean is something like this:

Hotlinks for ICT Systems Support Level 2

   Unit 401

<http://www.pat-testing.info>Page 3
Explains the UK legislation covering the legal duty to carry out PAT testing.

<http://www.grisoft.com>Page 26
Grisoft website, from which you can download the free version of the AVG anti-virus.

when the Web page looks like the screenshot below.  The page itself is Heinemann Hotlinks - ICT Systems Support Level 2.

At present I'm using an extension that copies the marked text as HTML, then stripping it in an editor, NoteTab Pro; just wondering if it could be made more seamless.

I'd just add that rjbull's original comment about the cost of the upgrade to Boxer Editor 14 seemed to me to be more along the line that for him "$29 is a lot of money to pay to get a single feature", and not that it's an outrageous sum for an upgrade. He's no longer using it and I presume has found an alternative with which he is happy.

Happy with a piece of software?  With just ONE piece of software?  Is this the real Darwin speaking?   As in, "My name is Mike and I am a software addict?"  ;D

You're more or less right, though.  Boxer was the first editor I registered - Bits du Jour has a lot to answer for - and if it had had that one feature, I might not have looked elsewhere.  Of course, it's more fun to be...  heterodox, but now I no longer have an income, I have to be a bit more careful about purchases.  At least I ought to be, but software still seems to be my most prolific discretionary purchase  :o

Obviously I'd have preferred the upgrade to be free, especially (if memory serves) because the Boxer license only allows you one installation, i.e. either hard disk or portable, not both.  However, I agree that $29 isn't especially steep for a sound product that is rarely upgraded, so you don't need (if "need" you do) to pay to upgrade very often.
1780
$29 upgrade price is a pittance.

It's worth adding - with a nod to Allen's comment about rock-solid - that Boxer's updates are rare, so not unreasonable to charge.  It's then a case of whether it's worth it to any particular user.
1781
Boxer Software have just released version 14 of their Boxer editor.  It's a paid upgrade; $29.00 to existing users (if I read it correctly, of any Boxer Software product, not just the editor) or the full price of $59.99 otherwise.

... we're pleased to announce Boxer 14, which adds dozens of new features to the editor you already use and enjoy:

VISUAL WRAP - also known as word wrap - is a passive display mode that wraps long lines to the window width, or to another user-defined margin. This makes it easier to work with files that have just one newline at the end of each paragraph.  The new Soften Line Enders command can be applied to a text file which has unwanted line enders, thereby making the file "flowable" and eligible for Visual Wrap. The Harden Line Enders command does the opposite: it converts soft line enders to hard line enders, effectively "locking" the current on-screen formatting into the file.

USER-DEFINED TOOLBAR ICONS - it's now possible to assign user-defined icons in BMP or ICO format to any of the commands that reside on the toolbar.  A collection of 64 sample icons is provided, and you're free to use others you can find or create.  Some users may wish to assign distinct icons to any User Tools or Macros they've placed on the toolbar, which would otherwise share the same icon.

XML FORMATTING - This new feature can be used to apply and remove formatting from XHTML and other XML-compliant text files. If you've ever opened an XML file and seen one long, flowing line extend off the right edge of the screen, you'll appreciate this new feature.  Format XML adds newlines and indentation intelligently to any XML-compliant file to create a neatly formatted document. Options are provided to control the amount of indent, whether to indent with spaces or tabs, when and whether text and tags should be wrapped, when to suppress newlines, and other formatting nuances.

EFFICIENT LINE NUMBER DISPLAY - Boxer will display its on-screen line numbers using the minimum number of columns possible, expanding and contracting the line number margin automatically if the file's line count grows or shrinks.

... and many more.  See the full list here:

  http://www.boxersoft...re.com/changes14.htm

Please note that Boxer 14 is fully compatible with Windows 7.

I abandoned Boxer mainly because it didn't have text wrap.  $29.00 is quite a lot to pay to get it.  It's a powerful editor, of course, but I'm not a power user  ;)

tomos, if you page down the PDFTK page to "Related Pages," you'll find two third-party GUIs for PDFTK.  I don't know if they'll do what you want, but they're free so might be worth a look.

To install, use the dcupdater, OR grab from here and unpack into your FARR Plugins directory: https://www.donation...dons/FCalc/FCalc.zip

mouser, I tried DcUpdater, but it gave a 403.  Thanks for the link above - installed and working now   :)

After long absence, I just installed FARR on a new computer.  What do I need to do to get FCalc working again, please?

nuance has nice layout features and powerful editing features.  But I wouldn't use it for my viewer.

superboyac, I take it that refers to the full Nuance package - you don't mean the free reader has any editing features?

Sorry, folks, false alarm.  It was a firewall problem   :-[  I had the same problem with both NoteFrog and HippoEdit.  I couldn't see entries for either of them in Online-Armor, either allowed or banned.  Both authors suggested adding their programs manually.  I've done that now, and the problem has disappeared.

I hope that my previous post answered your question. If no, please describe what do you mean by "Favourite Path drop-down as well as path Browse".

Yes, that looks like it will fit the bill admirably, thanks.

You can invoke a right-click menu by the "Application" keyboard key (resides between Ctrl and Alt keys on my keyboard).

I didn't know that  :-[  In my case, it's the key between AltGr and right Ctrl.  I think the icon's meant to be a menu.  I always think it looks like a stylised petrol pump  :huh:

What user-defined options should be available in your opinion?
ChoiceEditor works like an extension-sensitive context menu.  You configure your own choices.  In my case, for example, if I have Total Commander's cursor on a .txt file and press F4, I get a menu like the first screenshot.  On the other hand, if the cursor is on a PDF file, I get a menu like the second screen shot.  Some items appear on both menus because I configured them to be available for any extension, "*"

I'm not sure about what do you mean by "send plain filename". But MultiFind Pro already adds several useful command to context menu: "Open File name" and "Copy file name".

I'd like to copy file name only, without path; copy file name with path, as Multi-Find does now; and copy file name with full UNC path.  I don't need the last so much now, but it would have been useful when searching the network at work.

"drop-down history list", and regexp helper are already in my TODO list.

Great - and please could we have a Favourite Path drop-down as well as path Browse?  Thanks...

Cashper,

I'm keyboard-oriented, rather than mouse-oriented.  I'd like Multi-Find to be a bit more keyboard-friendly, and also to offer more possibilities for what you can do with the found files.

When you're at the main screen, please can Find become Find or Find, and Reset become Reset, i.e., hotkeys to start the search, and to reset the parameters?

I realise the standard right-click menu is available, but (a) I'd like to be able to pop it up with a hotkey, and (b) I'd like to have a version that offers user-defined options, like ChoiceEditor for Total Commander, or XYPlorer's Portable File Associations.  In fact you could even use ChoiceEditor directly because it's free, although the source code has been lost.  It's mentioned in several DC threads, including these:
though you might prefer to add your own version to Multi-Find Pro's Options, like XYPlorer.  I'd also like to be able to send (a) plain filename, (b) path+filename, and (c) full UNC path+filename to the clipboard.

Thanks...

Warning: I have not tried this.  The features list of PopTray includes the following (my emphasis):
Rules that identify a message according to your criteria, then does one of these actions:

    * Play different notification sound
    * Delete from the server
    * Run any EXE file
    * Mark as Spam
    * etc ...

General Software Discussion / Recommend anti-spyware, please?
« Last post by rjbull on February 27, 2010, 09:24 AM »
I run Online-Armor firewall, F-PROT Antivirus, and WinPatrol Plus system monitor.

Do I need any extra anti-spyware/anti-malware protection?  If so, what, please, are the best current recommendations?

Thanks...

Thanks, I couldn't see a portable version on your site.  I was looking for a ZIP file rather than an installer.

Well, missed this discount, but there's always a hope there'll be a next time  :)

Beautiful.

Thanks, mouser.  The photos were made for a digital photography evening class, from about a week before Christmas to end end of January.  It was bitterly cold, but the light was some of the most beautiful I have ever seen.

@Stephen66515: yes, Frome in Somerset UK.

How about a photo of your part of Somerset?

Only four-and-a-half years later, here are a few I made of the small town of Frome, near where I live.

General Software Discussion / Re: have you tried mind maps?
« Last post by rjbull on February 24, 2010, 04:23 PM »
i sort of got into using mind maps many years ago after reading a few books by Tony Buzan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Buzan.
I did an evening class recently.  The tutor seemed keen on mind maps, but it's something I'd never done because I was borne too soon  ;)  I came across one of Tony Buzan's books in the library and flipped through it.  It looked like he was defining new jargon to use in describing mind maps, which made me think it could easily end up as a groupie ghetto.  Also it looked like you had to be quite artistic with broad-tipped coloured markers.  So, I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has any further thoughts on this topic?
after creating a few i didn't find it helped a great deal.
That's rather what I was concerned about.
like brotherS, i didn't find that they changed my life - though, Tony Buzan gave me the impression that they would.
You're English, so (if you're old enough) you'll probably know what I mean when remind you of Mandy Rice-Davies' famous rejoinder...

Start - Control Panel - Windows Firewall
OK, thanks, done that now - but, Windows Firewall was turned OFF, because I was using Online-Armor.  I think OA's default is to turn Windows Firewall OFF when it's on itself, and to turn Windows Firewall back on if OA is turned off.  No Internet access change, and as Windows Firewall was off wasn't really expecting one, unless I need to reboot.  Getting late (for me) so I'll return to the struggle tomorrow (actually, it's BE tomorrow local time in ten minutes, but I meant a bit longer than that...).
