I suppose, thinking about it some more, that while 10 years ago this would have been a fantastic idea -- today with everyone on the web, and the web interactive forms so easy to make now, that this falls into the category of things that could be done so much better and more easily as a web application.  I know you said you would prefer a standalone app, it's just that the extra work and hassle of that is hard to justify, plus not to mention that doing it on the web saves all the trouble of putting the data together into a database, etc.  The advantages of a web-based solution are just so numerous that it makes the idea of a standalone app pretty unappealing.

Couple of related ideas for web page projects:

1) "What's my share?"  Lets you put in a total amount, and then a list of people and their percentages -- it should then calculate how much each person owes.  This one should be pretty simple and there are no doubt existing versions of this on the web. still might be nice to do a new one and then add features to it. -- claimed/pledged by dc member krish  

2) "Rank Em All" - Needs to be built on top of a cms like system that lets users create accounts and groups.  Basically users are organized into groups.  Each group has a page of products (any member of group can add a new product).  Each user then can RANK the items in the group to arrange them into some order (nice drag+drop javascript effect would be nice).  Then on the group page you can see each person's ranking as well as the average group ranking.  Would be fun for keeping track of things like board game rankings within a group, etc.  Could also be used for making purchase decisions -- everyone in the house gets to vote for a ranking of which product to buy -- and you buy the one that is the group top choice.

ahh!!!!!!!!!!

i should have read the initial post more carefully -- this must be why i had a hard time reproducing the problem -- because it doesn't happen if you run it manually!

can i verify that everyone with this problem is using my Find and Run Robot program?  If so, go into the Find and Run Robot options and disable Check automatically from the Plugins and Updates tab.  If not, then first step is to figure out what is telling dcupdater to run.

ok well im going to be checking into another issue thats been reported this week that results in network adapters not being shown -- maybe in fixing that i i will fix this as well.

is the realtek the only network adapter in your adapter list?

let me just confirm that the status bar doesnt change when scanning, even if you start browsing the web and going to different websites while it is sniffing?

when you click to start sniffing and then browse the web, you don't see packets counting in the status bar?
do you know if the realtek is your network card?

ps. adding it to the firewall is not needed to sniff -- only to do automatic network adapter detection, which as i said is not important.

just disable automatic network adapter detection from advanced options and set your adapter manually.
automatic network adapter detection is purely optional and does nothing more than help you choose your adapter -- it can fail when a firewall blocks url snooper or for various other reasons, and is unneeded.

Maybe another thing that makes DC special is that while there are plenty of places to find really good software, plenty of places to find really good coders, and plenty of places to find very knowledgeable techies, maybe there aren't so many places where non-experts are welcomed so enthusiastically into the discussions and projects?
