Living Room / Re: OpenDNS - safer, faster and smarter DNS
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 01, 2008, 01:16 PM »
Welcome to DC, david!!

We didn't do that for a reason.
I don't think i understand. You mean you give people a proxy address for google instead of google itself, but for no reason?

(notice that i'm not accusing you, i think you provide a great service and have used it when my isp's dns went down, i'm just wondering what your reasons for this would be).

I just gave it a go with ahk, and had the most frustrating hour ever!

After all, it looks like creating the .ini file isn't enough!!
And it looks like ahk has a huge stupid bug with file-pattern loops!!

Thus, i'm sorry but i can't keep this one.

gogogadgetscott: please do, amaze us! :D

Yep, doctorfrog, deleting the desktop.ini files should do the trick :)

[Opera won't work with a standard OS setting??]
Opera does work with the regular mailto: links, the problem is with the image, from what i understand, it doesn't allow you to create an email with an attachment with that method.

General Software Discussion / Re: Digital ink/tablet pc: worth the effort?
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 01, 2008, 07:42 AM »
I talked to him about it, and he mentioned it could be useful in meetings, to take notes. Now... I've never seen any paper or digital (typed) notes he has ever did, so i suppose it isn't something he does right now.

Regarding the weigth/size, the one i'm now aiming is the one on the image (hp 2710p), which has a 12'' screen (no problem with the eyes, it's the same resolution as his current one), and has a great weight of 1.6kg (just perfect for the on-the-move life he's going to have).

Unfortunatelly, i can't test its precision, but i think it'd be an important thing to do first :(

Probably a dumb question, but you have set up the default email client correctly? The following works for me...
I feel dumb... You're right, that works. (unfortunatelly, opera won't accept it, though, but no problem :)).

Ok, so i just found out another interesting thing!
I mentioned about moving the image when out of full-screen: that can be done with right-button drag! smart :D

what I miss in most viewers is the option to zoom into a selected area of image
Oh, but MaxView won't let you down on that! Try pressing ctrl and dragging with left button! :D
1758
This can be done, it isn't much of a task and it's pretty cool ;)

The icon of the folder is stored under a hidden system file inside that folder called desktop.ini.
Thus, changing the info on that file is pretty easy.

Now, the big problem i can see, is when there are several icons/executables on the same folder. Also notice that if you have 2 icons with a different name, they'll be identified as being a different icon even if the image is the same (fixing this isn't trivial).

So... My option would be: for a first version, make it add the first icon/executable it finds or instead, if there are multiple choices, add none. And for a next version, we could add something like a popup asking the user to choose between the icon options on the folder.

Regarding the "extras"... Only the option on recursion is trivial, the first one is complex, the second one is doable (depends on how much attention the app gets), and the fourth one... I don't think i get what you mean :)

What do you think?

BTW: My version emails out of Thunderbird just fine[/b]  :-\ ... so I didn't send my email anyway  :D
Now that's strange... I have opera set as defaul email handler and MaxView still opens in outlook express.
It could be some error on my end, then.

Hey doctorfrog!

I didn't know about irfanview's add of an adware bar. I guess that's yet another positive point for MaxView :D

Actually, There's something i forgot to mention (becaus i haven't really used it in depth), but MaxView also has its own simple editor, which allows you to add highlights, text, freelines and watermarks to images. And the highlights look really really nice!! :D

Maybe we all should send an email (as a more realistic indication of the functions support)  :D
;D I already sent mine, and pointed the developer to this thread.
Let's not annoy him to death (or he might get mad at us and not implement it :P), but get the max people to post here supporting his software instead!

I'll bet you that this approach will get a better result (not to say about the warm feeling inside for the developer ;) )

And i'll send the developer a mail!

Yes, exactly mouser!

I really like your solution, and think it's the standard way to do it.

Maybe we should ger other's opinions on this, if this affects all plugins, but i think your solution is just perfect.

General Software Discussion / Digital ink/tablet pc: worth the effort?
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 01, 2008, 06:21 AM »
Ok, so my father needs a new laptop.

We already settled that it needs to be a small computer (12''/13''), but now the doubt came up: should it be a tablet pc?

I understand that a tablet pc is better for reading stuff because you can use it just like a paper sheet. My doubt is with the usefulness of the digital pen, which they advertise as being "the way of the future"(tm) (f0dder :P), but i just can't find REAL useful uses for it, and think that my father would just get tired of using it.

So, i'd like your opinions, whether you have a tablet pc or not, on how useful is this, and if you use it whenever you can.

Hey techidave!

About outlook vs thunderbird, i suppose not, unfortunatelly :(
I just tested, and apparently it even ignores the windows default setting for email program. It's a shame, because that email feature is really nice (i had never used it :) ).

PS: the external programs are only external programs for image editing, anything you add in that tab appears in the "edit with external programs" menu, and the first one on the list is triggered on e press.

Ok, fixed that problem.
; minimize the current window when pressing pagedown twice quickly
; maximize the current window when pressing pageup twice quickly
#NoEnv
SendMode Input
SetKeyDelay 0,0
#NoTrayIcon
Delay = 250

~PgDn up::
If (A_PriorHotkey = A_ThisHotkey and A_TimeSincePriorHotkey < Delay)
WinMinimize, A
Return
~PgUp up::
If (A_PriorHotkey = A_ThisHotkey and A_TimeSincePriorHotkey < Delay)
WinMaximize, A
Return

Adding "up" to the hotkey will only trigger it when the key is released, fixing the keyboard repeat problem! :)

I must say congrats justice, this was a really great idea :D

Ok, i just found a small bug. If you keep the key pressed, the keyboard auto-repeat will activate the maximize function. Not good, specially when use shift as hotkey!

jgpaiva opens ahk's help file :P

You can, justice.. But that'd mean you'd have to add a delay to the regular use of pageup/down (because during that time, you'd have to be waiting for the next press of pgdown), thus, the solution is really worse than the problem ;)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New FARR Plugin: FCalc
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 01, 2008, 05:43 AM »
I have 3 usability suggestions for fcalc:

1 - Add 2 forms of "copy result to clipboard". Something like: when you press enter, it copies the result; when you press shift+enter, it copies the whole expression.

2 - Please please please remove the "scroll past history" on end/home press, it's soooo anoying. (or at least add it as an option :) )

3 - Add an option to change the text that gets on the editbox when you press enter. This is useful for those that don't use the default regular expression (mine is a regex that recognizes mathematical expressions, thus I'd like it to clear the input box on enter press).

While #1 and #3 would just be great to have, i think #2 is a critical fix, as this one annoys me almost every time i use fcalc :(

I also missed this, just yesterday.

The idea would be that when you get the focus on the last element of the list and press down, farr would add +sall to the editbox.

I think it'd be very useful :)

Very interesting idea, justice!!

I never though of using this kind of repetitive hotkeys to make shortcuts.

I prefer my win+x to maximize/restore windows, though, essencially because with the scheme you chose, pgup/pgdown gets sent to the current window.
I think i'll adapt your script to work with right shift for myself :)

There are about 1,483,020 germs on your keyboard right now!
That's equivalent to the number of germs on 297 toilet seats.

    Intro:

This is just the simplest image view ever.

    Screenshot-08_02_01,00_20_32.png

Who is this app designed for:

This app is intended for anyone who has lots of photos, and is looking for a application better suited then the default windows image viewer.

    The Good

    • Fast: It come up as fast as the default windows viewer (which uses already-loaded windows stuff, AFAIK)
    • Good shortcuts: What's better than one-key shortcuts?
enter or f for "toggle full-screen",
e to edit with external program (like paint.net)
            l or r to rotate left/right,
            etc....
      Screenshot-08_02_01,00_21_32.png

    • exif support!! It reads the exif and rotates the image accordingly. It also displays all exif information
      Screenshot-08_02_01,00_22_01.png

    • Borderless/captionless window: nothing simpler, all i want to see when i open an image is the image itself, i don't care for anything else. It can also open the image on fullscreen by default.

    • Smart edges when on fullscreen: if you move the cursor to the top edge, the menu comes up. If you move it to the right edge, exif information comes up. If you move to the bottom edge, the taskbar is shown! How many times have you pressed the windows key to check if someone said something on msn while you were watching a slideshow?

    • Zoom on mouse click: similar to XYplorer's "Mouse Down Blow Up", while you keep the mouse button down, the image zooms to 2x (that's the default, can be changed), and returns the original size on button release.

    • Resize to predefined/custom sizes: press ctrl-r and a dialog comes up. (actually i just found about this :P)
      Screenshot-08_02_01,00_22_47.png

    • The slideshow features: customizable time, fade effects, and pause/play on mouse click! (how useful is that? ;) )
      Screenshot-08_02_01,00_23_18.png

    • There are other interesting features i didn't mention because i don't use that much:
      • Email the image
      • Zoom on parts of the image (ctrl+drag on image)
      • Simple editor (highlight parts, write text, watermark, etc..)
      • Image smoothing.. ETC!

    The needs improvement section
    • The thing that most annoys me in maxview is the fact that it doesn't precache the images, which makes it be a bit slower than it could be. (not that it's very noticeable, though). edit: actually, i just compared it with windows image preview, and it isn't slower.. I possibly was sleepy when i came to this conclusion before :)

    • I also don't like the fact that there isn't an option to allow dragging on image instead of zoom when on windowed mode. (this makes me zoom in the image instead of moving it, every time i try to drag the window) Edit: This feature exists and works great! You only have to drag with the right mouse button!

    • Even though the email feature is really neat, there doesn't seem to be any option to set an external email program, and it doesn't use the system default, only uses outlook, which makes this feature unnusable for us software junkies :) edit: it uses the system default setting, see Perry's post below!

Why I think you should use this product
Well... If you're still using Windows picture and fax viewer, you DEFINITELY should at least try this, it's a huge improvement and you'll never go back :P

How does it compare to similar apps
OK, I've already compared to windows picture and fax viewer, I'll just make a small comparison with irfanview.
DISCLAIMER: i haven't used irfanview in a while, thus, i might be out of date/forgotten about my comments. If so, please correct me below.
I'm almost sure irfanview was slower, and had a bunch of features i didn't really need (like the picture browser and alike). Also, it missed THE most important feature: rotate on exif information.

    Conclusions

I surely recommend this utility, it has made a huge difference in the way i visualize images, and i don't need to manually rotate pictures anymore! :D
I think it's really well-though, every small detail needed in a image viewer is present, making it a joy to use.
It's just simple, complete and freeware, you can't go wrong with that combination!

    Just a few more screenshots:
    Screenshot-08_02_01,00_24_40.pngScreenshot-08_02_01,00_25_16.pngScreenshot-08_02_01,13_35_04.png

PS: i'll add the images in a bit Done![/list]
