Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Online Armor Premium Firewall for Free
« Last post by cthorpe on August 11, 2009, 01:08 AM »
Online Armor is highly regarded at Wilderssecurity.com (http://wilderssecurity.com).  I own a license for Look n Stop, but that didn't stop me from taking advantage of the OA offer to get a license for their firewall as well.  Maybe I'll put it on my wife's laptop.

Tracks doesn't play well with Google Calendar.  In fact, it doesn't work with it at all AFAIK.

Have you looked at Tracks?  http://getontracks.org/

You might be able to use the projects as your 4 priorities, and I believe you can have the program list your programs in an order you specify on any given day.

PM me if you want to demo Tracks for a few days, and I will create an account for you on the installation I have running.

I set up OmniPage like so...

menu.jpg

then Add... and

settings.jpg

The Program line points to OmniPage17.exe

On the parameters line, I had to put the " " around %file% (mouser, the program says it will add those if necessary, but it didn't).

Then, all I need to do is scan the image, and click OmniPage to send the image to OCR.

Didn't want this to get lost in the other thread with all that serious discussion...

I usually hate having to do scans, since it means running the software that came with the scanner.  It takes forever to load, even longer to scan, and requires about 5 steps to get each scan from the bed to a usable file.  It's annoying, slow, and painful.  Of course, I know how to do it, and its what I've been using for nearly 2 years.  Occasionally I'll try something else which claims to be better, and I get frustrated because I don't know the program and give up.  I rarely fire up the scanner, so it's too much trouble to learn a new program.

Yesterday, I found myself needing to scan some receipts for insurance purposes.  Since I have some free time these days (teacher + summer = nice), I decided to try a new program.  Lo and behold, Screenshot Captor now has scanning functionality.  Now, I will admit, sheepishly, that I am a SnagIt user.  It's hard not to be when you have legal access to a SnagIt/Camtasia bundled license for less than $50  So I loaded up Screenshot Captor, and got ready to learn how to do scanning with a new program.  10 minutes in, I hadn't figured it out.  Then I decided to RTFM, and realized that I needed to turn on scanning in the options.  Less than 5 minutes later, I had my first scan completed.  Then another.  Then a third, and suddenly visions of a paperless office began dancing in my head.  SC was fast and easy.  Two clicks and I had an image I could be proud of.  Ten minutes later I was done with the insurance documents.

Did I stop there?  No!  I grabbed a stack of photographs (yeah, I know, who uses film anymore?) and started scanning.  SC seemed to get better images without any tweaking than my old scanner software did after fiddling with sliders and dials for an hour.  Before I knew it wedding pictures, teaching certificates, medical records, and notes had all been scanned.  A quick add of an external tool, and now even my text scans can be sent over to OmniPage with just a flick of my wrist and a click of my finger!

Needless to say, I have replaced the bloated, slow software that came with my scanner, and now I am a SC user.

Three cheers for mouser!

ListPro is my most used app on Pocket PC.  I am a teacher so I use it to track attendance, participation, homework, etc.  I have a list for each class with 5 checkboxes for each student.  Each day I copy the list and rename it to the current date (a Calligrapher (http://www.phatware....details/calligrapher) macro does that for me when I write the word date on the screen and circle it).  Then I have a list to check all kinds of things.  At the end of the day, the list gets synced to my pc.

I also use it for shopping lists, packing lists, gift lists, etc.

I give it a 5 out of 5.

DISCLAIMER - I am in no way affiliated with this software or its developer and I do not receive any compensation for posting positive comments or any sales that result from my comments.  I am a happy user and my comments should be taken as such.

I run AdBlock Plus when I am using Firefox (95% of the time).  I have quite a few sites "whitelisted" so their ads appear.  If I find myself going to a site all the time and using their bandwidth and knowledge, then they deserve some revenue.  On the other hand, I'd rather see a site ad-free if its an "unknown" site.

I had a site that was moderately successful for a time.  At its peak, it was averaging over 1000 "unique visitors" a day.  I put up ads to defray the cost of running the site.  The rest, I promised, would go to a charity closely related to the site's content.  After running the ads for 3 months, I had to shut down the site.  One of the many reasons was that I was paying more than the ads were bringing in.  When looking through logs, I saw that most ads were being blocked, so I wasn't even getting the fractions of a cent for impressions much less any actual click-throughs.  Even my regulars were blocking the ads, which were the only source of income the site had.

As for ad supported software: as long as the ads only appear when I am using the particular software, I have no problem.  If I recall, Eudora used to have an ad-supported version of their email client that I used exclusively throughout college.  If the program installs some other kind of ad-generating software on my computer, however, it's not ok and the software goes in the trash.

I updated the disclaimer at the top of my review: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7189.0

I am very sorry you got burned by Horizon Data.  Perhaps try contacting the developer rather than the reseller.  The official forum for Leapfrog Software can be found here: http://www.wildersse...orumdisplay.php?f=84.  In particular, check out the links about Existing Customer Migration and new versions.  I do not know if you can take advantage of their offers as a Horizon Data customer, but it is worth a shot.

However, most support is given via  http://www.anvir.com...um/viewforum.php?f=4 , not per email.

The company lists a support email here http://www.anvir.com/contacts.htm, so I assumed it was an acceptable way of getting technical support.  If I recall, their forums were getting hammered with spam at the time I was trying to contact them so that didn't seem to be a good way to get help.  It does look like they have control of their forums again, so maybe I just caught them at a bad time.

This is a personal experience with the company.  I have no idea if it is indicative of the experiences of other customers.

I own a license for their TaskManager Pro.  I had frequent crashes and system slow downs.  Every time I removed media from my card reader it would pop up an error about being unable to access the media any longer.  There was no reason why it should have been accessing the media.  The only way to get rid of the error would be to reinsert the media or shut down TaskManager Pro.  I emailed the company about the problem 3 times over a three week period.  The first email went unanswered.  The 2nd and 3rd were returned with an error stating that their mail servers had rejected the email because of the domain it was sent from.  This was especially troubling since I was sending from gmail.

I gave up, uninstalled it, and went back to Process Explorer.

As far as I recall, the help file viewer in Windows is using the IE engine, so Windows assumes that you are clicking a link in IE.  That means you're stuck there.

You're not alone.  Everyone's Zune 30gb froze on the 31st.  http://www.theregist...08/12/31/zune_death/

Your Zune should be ok today.  Just let the battery die, then plug it in and it should start working again.  Mine came back to life.

Here's the official statement: http://www.zune.net/...s/support/zune30.htm

v5 does a better job that v6.  I don't know about non-US ISBNs, as most of our books are US versions.
