Let the clock start. steeladept should disappear from the forum for a period of six months starting in about 18 months. That will be about the time we'll hear something to the effect of "I really really really need to start my thesis". ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: extract text from pdf
« Last post by tinjaw on July 16, 2009, 01:48 PM »
It looks like you can use pdf2text with the -raw option to remove the columns.

Then use your favorite search & replace tool with regex support.

Replace '\r\n([^8])' with ' $1' and that should get you the stuff on one line.

Then remove the 8's at the beginning of the line. Replace '^8' with ''.

Then do some other regex searches to remove the garbage like

3 TaTP / Ta (an)TP

and

Ta (an)TP / Ta (an)TP 4

etc.

Living Room / Looking for personal contact at DreamHost
« Last post by tinjaw on July 01, 2009, 09:47 PM »
I have a very serious matter that I cannot discuss further in public except to say that if I just call or email DreamHost support I am unlikely to get this manner resolved in a sufficiently timely manner or have the matter treated with the importance that it deserves. I am asking a favor of this community. If you personally know somebody that works at DreamHost and you feel comfortable asking them to contact me directly, I would be extremely grateful. Thank you for your time.

Dancing women seems to have a monopoly. They exist from Hell to Heaven.

That is such a relief. I'm glad to know that no matter where I end up, there will always be dancing women.  : 8)

Ohhhhh !!! Armed Assault II. You will love that game. We were playing the demo yesterday at work. Yes, I said at work. No we weren't hiding in our offices with our door closed. No, our bosses didn't tell use we could take a break and have some fun. I'm sorry to tell you that I was getting to paid play it. Yep! Sorry, because now you are jealous. I get paid to play video games.

Actually, I have been playing Armed Assault II for months... well, kind of, as I have been playing (excuse me, "operating") VBS2 at work. I work for the US Army and they use VBS2 as a game-based training simulation.

At several locations, there are a few of my friends whose only job is to train soldiers on how to train using VBS2. This includes building scenarios and operating OPFOR.

Don't be too surprised if you see Tinjaw on a game server doing "work hours". I might be playing because I "have to" do my job.  ;)

you had to find someone in a beard wearing sandals if you needed anything new  ;D

Now I dabble with Python and C#.

And those that dabble with Python and C# wear sandals and are covered in tattoos. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Duplicate Finder 2009

Would any of these programs be able to find the misnamed tracks and repair them? That would be more than worth the cost of a license.

That is one of the tasks Jaikoz is built to handle. I suggest you download the trial version and invest the time to learn how to use it. I think you would be pleased with the results.

Hehehe  :D I wasn't talking about needing the time to learn Jaikoz, but rather that it will take so much time to do a good job at sorting out all my music. But I can see how so many features and a crowded UI could be quite intimidating.

Jaikoz is not a tool for quick checks, but instead for more intensive work. You should know that you could simply start up Jaikoz and immediately tell it to run a default search on a chosen directory. Quite easy actually.

Have you tried contacting the developer to see if he can add that feature?

I am currently going though my audio collection (I think it is about 2,000) with Jaikoz Audio Tagger. I will grab a copy of the trial version of Audio DeDupe and see how it compares in terms of finding dupes. Jaikoz does much more than just find dupes. All I need now is more time to actually work this.

I have added a full drag and drop support in the current release (for both: files and text blocks from other IDEs or editors).

Yeah! I am off to download my registered version (with super special extra privileges  8) ).

Developer's Corner / An interesting twist on documentation
« Last post by tinjaw on June 18, 2009, 03:38 PM »
I just read an interesting article at Dr. Dobb's about a project that is trying to make better documentation by observing what searches developers make and then add pointers to help them along.

Google found me Zim, but I checked out BasKet and that looks nicer. I think I will start with that. (Side note, I wish I would have gone with kubuntu instead of ubuntu.)

Fork

I now find myself in uncharted territory. I need to find an uberapp to keep my notes in while working on Linux boxen. I shall begin my quest with a Google search.

In the mean time, please talk amongst yourselves.

Do you have access to experts-exchange? It looks like this exact scenario. I don't know if the answer is a good one as I don't have access.

That would be great idea if I could find something that a novice could do.

I am not in a position to test it, but...

  • WinDirStat has a portable version.
  • WinDirStat has the ability to email a directory listing ("Report") directly from the main menu.
  • WinDirStat can be configured to do "Cleanups"

Based on that I would postulate that you could repackage the portable version into a self-extracting compressed archive that auto-executes WinDirStat upon completing the decompression. Provide simple instructions to collect data on the computers hard drive and send the report to you. You then create the appropriate "Cleanups" and repackage the app again. They would then run the cleanups you configured, rerun the report and send it to you. Lather, Rinse, Repeat, as necessary until things are cleaned up.

Again, just assuming here; I haven't tested this.

[added] I further postulate that the "cleanups" might be stored in a config file that would allow simply sending a config file instead of a whole new compressed archive.

Too late, but for anybody that might come across this in a search...

I would suggest running a program that output that info, and have that file emailed to you. You could then do the analysis and even email back a .BAT file to perform the required operations to "repair" the computer. That could include archiving files to a compressed file to be offloaded to some portable media.

I looked on ByteScout's freeware page and they have a Lite version that is freeware.
