Hey Ken welcome back - if that isn't an inappropriate comment  :o Maybe I should have said your return is very welcome ;)

:onfire: :onfire: :onfire::greenclp: :beerchug: :greenclp: :beerchug: :greenclp: :beerchug: :greenclp: :beerchug:

... Sorry for the rant everyone - I get quite passionate about the dwindling pretence of democracy in the UK and I just needed to let off a little steam  :-[  :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!

Thank you VERY MUCH Carol. That was a wonderful message and I REALLY APPRECIATE IT (even though you were and and now I am off topic). It's fantastic to be (at least a little) back.  :-*

My point is, you can't hardly call what this administration does fascist.  Nor can you call it a cure-all.  Let's leave the politics of the administration to the administration being discussed if we are going to discuss politics, and present posts of other policies in their own posts.  That way I can avoid them as desired
That's a first for me: having someone tell me not to write about something after they first write about 4 times as much as I did.  :-\

No, there is no major flaw with my reasoing and the fact that you see things differently does not make it so. The fact is, I can call any government fascist that engages in activities such as invading another country under false pretenses, violating our first amendment by trying to influence our press, attack people who say things against them, torturing their prisoners, illegally listening to the conversations of its citizens, trying to compel officials to support their position on issues and firing them when they don't to name just a few of the public scandals this administration has become infamous for that I can think of off the top of my head. This administration has repeatedly behaved in immoral and illegal ways, just like other previous governments who were regarded as being fascists. So, I think I am very well justified in using that word.

I would suggest that if you don't want to read about something, then just say something like "this post is off-topic for the forum" rather than telling them that there are major flaws with their reasoning and then talking about your beliefs at length. It's just a suggestion of course.

Is this the place for this discussion? Nope, but usually, people are given some latitude when they stray off topic.

In a few hours time Part III of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 will come into effect. The commencement order means that as of October 1st a section 49 notice can be served which requires that encrypted data be “put into an intelligible form” (what you and I might call “decrypted”). holy fucking crap what the hell?!
mouser, we need a smile-face that does the hitler salute, seriously...
there's just no way to describe how idiotic, nazi, 1984, [more adjectives here] this is...
i'm shocked (and yes, this comes from someone in who's country possession of hacker tools is illegal)
I think you got a pretty good start to the list. The only obvious omission is fascist. What else would you expect from this government though given the other atrocities they've comitted? Absolute power corrupt absolutely and this administration has largely acted without the normal checks and balances. The American people will have a chance again soon to bring the pendulum back if that's what they want. Maybe democracy really can't be sustained.

Wow. I didn't know you did that work. I am/was a clinical neuropsychologist and did some cognitive psychology as well. I did not do a lot of research in cognitive, but it is an interesting and challenging area.

I love Gravity. I've used it at all stages of it's existence. I have tried it a few times in the last several years and it has just not been the same since it's death as shareware.

Like the quote says, the feature is either available in Actual Window Guard at $29.95 or in the whole Actual Window Manager "suite" at... $59.95 (now that's out of the question...).

let's see if somebody comes up with some other solutions...  :)

Yeah, for $60 (or $30 for that matter) I got one ...
  Live with it!

I can understand the reasons behind not implementing an extension or plugin system (security), but come on. In this day and age, where a browser is a very personal piece of software, why not truly allow users to customize the browser to their likings? I am a huge opera fan, I love it, however it is lacking in several departments which could be fixed by allowing existing solutions to be incorporated into the program. Opera tries to simplify this by incorporating a VERY BASIC version of many features, often leaving much to be desired (torrent support anyone?), and as such they can claim that "Yes, we can do this". This is all well and good if they wish to remain a niche browser. However, I think opera would want to expand their market share. Yes, they have the cell market cornered, but the desktop market leaves a lot to be desired.

I pray for the day that I can use roboform, and various other programs I've purchased, with the opera, however until this day comes, I have to avoid opera. I need to be able to grow my browser as I DEEM FIT, not as the developers deem fit for me to do so.

Ditto! Well-said Josh.

[Dang! That's no fun... I'll have to stick with "Crusader" then, and forget my dreams of internet notoriety as "The Corpulent Curmudgeon" (as even Curmudgeon is ten letters!).

LOL. Well, even if no one else does, you and I will enjoy this thread!  :P

Actually, you may be ok. In here, you could use an underscore and you don't really spend much time in "the channel" anyway. If you run into a name limitation here, just let Mouser know. I'm sure he would be delighted to rewrite the forum software so you could have a different nick. ;D

I think that "Caped Crusader" has a nice ring to it...

Thanks, Ken - that made me laugh  :-*

Aaugh! I just edited my last post to add Crusader to it! We'll see if anything can top it. I would just respectfully remind you that a nick has to be one word (and of course has a 9 char limit on Efnet).

I think Darwin should consider changing his nick to something like "Revenger". He could use Justice, but that's already taken. What would others suggest?

Today's GiveAway is offering some of it:

East-Tec Backup 2007 backs up and protects the files and data you care about (files, folders, documents, emails, photos, address book, and settings from your favorite programs such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, and more).
-GiveAwayOfTheDay

Nice post Curt. Thanks for letting people know. Backuping things up is always an ongoing need and it's always good to bring such offers to people's attention.

Finances are tight Josh, but it sounds like a worthy cause. Count me in.

Loki, son of Odin, brother of Thor (unless you're not that Loki):

I just saw that you were back in action with v2 of AcroLiminator instead of letting it RIP as indicated in earlier postings. Good for you! On the other hand, you always were a bit of a trickster :)

Take heart! Sometimes even great things take a while to catch on.

General Software Discussion / Re: Check&Get support blows chunks
« Last post by KenR on August 30, 2007, 10:22 AM »
I don't accept spam as an excuse (or explanation) here. I sent multiple messages, all of which went through the developers website, rather than my email package. Therefore, I don't have a record of them. I began sending them shortly after I purchased the program. Since I installed Check & Get in May of this year. We can reasonably infer that I have been trying to contact the developer for approximately 3 months.

Someone is just not trying when they don't respond to 1) emails from their customers from their own site, 2) emails from outsite the system they've set up but to a previously known good email address from which no "bounce" email message is received, and finally )3 posts in a forum.

If the developer is no longer providing support he should say so. If the software is dead and no further developing is going to take place, that should be made clear - though I know few authors do this. Why? Because people wouldn't buy their software if they knew it was dead. So why not just give people the impression things are still fine so you can screw potential customers out of some money.

I don't think the software is shit, but I certainly think the support is. The biggest tragedy here is that the program could really be good with some changes. Instead, it's just mediocre at best.

As Darwin said, he and I collaborated on this, so obviously my feelings are similar. I have sent several messages to the developer and it appears I might just as well have given the feedback to one of my dogs. As with Darwin, I received no response to any of the messages I sent. This is particularly surprising given this quote from the developer:

...
Any suggestion of user interface improvements are welcome! I am contantly working on improving the user interface and appreciate any help and suggestions.

Sincerely yours,
Dmitry Skorniakov,
http://ActiveURLs.com

It's really too bad. Check & Get's design is solid and it does a number of things well. The program needs work to transform it from basic to refined though. It lacks a number of features and several existing ones could be implemented considerably better. Hopefully, something better will come along soon.

Far be it from me to speak for ANYONE, but I think there are really two issues here. One is free speech as a constitutional right to cricize public officials who must ultimately answer to the people in a democracy.

The second issue is really about candor and honesty. This is not the first time that J. River's forum has been brought up, for doing things from deleting posts to criticizing its users. While they are not obligated to allow any particular posts, then it is no longer a forum as we would think of it. As far as I know, they put up no information about what people can post, they simply criticize and get rid of what they don't want. Also, I have never heard of any other forum doing this, so we certainly can't say it's common practice and expected behavior.

Ok, so now that you have gotten some feedback on programs, here is a list of RSS feeds for you. Certainly FeedDemon, GreatNews, and many other program can import this type of RSS data (OPML) file.

Enjoy, Ken
