May be Netgear have new firmware? Each product have a page at their site. Also take a look at DSLreport, especially their forum about Netgear http://www.dslreports.com/forum/netgear

http://kbserver.netg.../products/wn311b.asp 28.09 you got 1.2? No changelog but check forums/Google

Now you know how Nvidia Firewall have worked for many. Its low level drivers are gone? System properties, show hidden devices, non-plug&play devices - "NVTCP" NVIDIA TCP/IP Protocol Driver ?

Nothing to do about ram than hope next modules work. If same error experiment with voltage, not timings. They should be able to run at rated timings. Also try 1T vs. 2T. Who knows if they demand 1T. Ive had expensive ram on NF4 which was close to unstable, 1T meant BSOD instantly. Now I got cheaper Corsair 4000PT and never a problem. You run into these problems no matter chipset, never plug and plug.

So ram is probably defect but these type of problems are typical of new computer. In 1 week situation will be better.

There are many test programs but the most picky is Prime95 so that is why I mentioned it. Very sensitive, way too much actually but then you have some distance to where things gets unstable. Only relevant for you because of memory, cpu cant be unstable when not overclocked. Cpu temp you get can be compared to gaming on a summer day, not close to a problem with no overclocking. Memory is always tweaked in some way, not plug and play like cpu. Anyway, if you read P95 authors stress.txt which should be in download you know what to do. Cant test 3D so other tools or better games must be used. You got some SLI to test. Where it gets complicated is when any 2D stuff is perfect, P95 can run for days but 3D is shaky. Most likely 3D releated but can still be a timing settting like 1T/2T. Some games like those with Unreal engine are picky with memory timings. You should not notice or care that much when not overclocking but if memory dont really like chipset/bios/your settings then prepare yourself.

With so complicated bios and so many drivers it is not easy to do your own foolproof troubleshooting. Best to research a little and take advantage of others experiences (mistakes). Im assuming you have one of the later bios versions so flashing should not be needed - will bet Asus changelog have tons of fixes since original.

Asus have a little forum for each model, for AN832 SLI Deluxe http://vip.asus.com/...&SLanguage=en-us

Nvidia have made a pdf file about overclocking/tweaking for their NF5 chipsets www.nvidia.com/content/nforce5/DU-02451-001_v01_overclocking.pdf  Much is relevant for NF4 as well, a chapter about "Disable AMD C&Q" for example.

A really good overclocking guide which also explains chipset, bios terms and most importantly show how to test properly is http://www.short-med...p?print=r&id=300 Manual overclocking forces you do know these things. Very few things really. Has never been easier to overclock/setup. So easy it is build into chipset/bios and motherboard makers throw oc-software at you. You could pick a "5%" Asus preset but I hope you change the 3-4 settings manually instead - then you get more like 20-25% :) They are not stupid and so keep maximum levels down to a point where it is unlikely to cause problems for people.

As said I dont like their auto stuff too much but check those who have actually used them. Perhaps they work better today after some bugfixing. Remember though that most speed of NF4 speed comes from cpu. Making memory stable is first priority, not overclocking/tweaking it. But do enable 1T, the memory tweak with most impact - except timings the only one! Overclocking pci-e gives very little if anything and directly overclocking video cards I think is best done by Nvidia drivers, alternatively Rivatuner or other 3rd party programs. Asus "dynamic" overclocking where 2D is cool/slow and 3D gets a boost sounds nice but I dont like it :) I do exactly the same for my video card though, a tool lowers rpm/mhz in 2D and go max in 3D. Make sense for video hardware (and my ears). Cpu, memory couldnt care less. Asus allows you to keep a Cool&Quiet setup while still doing some overclocking where any guide/advice would tell you to turn it off when leaving default. Dont make the 2 approaches conflict.

You have nTune? Nvidias diagnostic tool http://www.nvidia.co...tune_5.05.18.00.html Not too bad and show all this in bright colours. Can overclock Nvidia video cards as well, anything can be monitored. Might be better than Asus tools. Compare readouts with Asus Probe.

Nvidia SLI Zone, join Club SLI??? http://www.slizone.com/page/home.html May be better to bookmark Nvidias regular user-to-user forums http://forums.nvidia...inid=5&setskin=1 Pretty good. You should have at least 2-3 Asus/chipset related sources bookmarked.

My new tab setup - trying Firefox without Tab Mix Plus, "ligher" perhaps or not  :o

Opaque + Cleartabs theme https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3839/
Seems much nicer than default and as far as I can tell it is 100% compatible so no annoying surprises. Only a "paint" job.

Tab Control http://firefox-exten...tius.com/tab+control
Some features from Tab Mix are needed. Latest version also control the close button, on active, on all etc.

FaviconizeTab https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3780/
Doubleclick (or other shortcut) a tab and it minimizes to favicon, not so silly once implemented in way of organizing. Chormatabs http://labs.mozilla..../2006/11/chromatabs/ is along the same line but not so advanced. May be they will join hands some how. Domain coloring seems like the way to go but Im not sure, Aging tabs has advantages for those with messy habits.

Aging Tabs http://en.design-noi.../mozilla/aging-tabs/
Also needs implementation but Im starting to see the light. Looks very cool as well. Does work with TMP following notes at his site.

Tab Overflow https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3726/
I would not install since it is only a few css hacks. Besides I could not uninstall for whatever reason - also why I show css code. Userchrome.css is there to be used. This also take out arrows including the one showing list of tabs.

Spoiler
.tabbrowser-strip [overflow="true"] {
background:none!important;
min-height: 38px !important;
}

tabs[overflow="true"] .tabbrowser-arrowscrollbox > scrollbox {
  overflow: auto !important;
  min-height: 38px !important;
  margin-right: -3px !important;
  margin-left: -3px !important;
}

.tabs-alltabs-popup > arrowscrollbox > scrollbox {
  overflow: auto !important;
}

/*Disable scroll arrows */
.scrollbutton-up, .scrollbutton-rel-box {
  display: none !important;
}

/* Disable Container box for "List all Tabs" Button */
.tabs-alltabs-stack { display: none !important; }

Of course scrollbar is only visible when tabs are "overflowing" - to some degree decided by minimum tab width in Tab Control. With some use of FaviconizeTab this works pretty good. Less chaotic for me than with TMP. Colours, Minitabs probably release extra brain cells and encourage a little thinking in how to handle 15-20 tabs.

Corsair is very well documented, except for a few details like with my ram. Look it up at their site, they will have a little pdf-file for each model but punch in keywords (searchbox works with no registration) at their forum. Popular motherboard and popular ram will have more than 1 "victim" :)

2-3-3-6 and 2.75v they say. Opposite of logic you should not expect slower to work, all depends on chip. Corsair will tell you to set up timings manually. What you see in Memtest86 must be correct. Default voltage could be 2.6 so also set voltage, bios cant do that automaticallly.

There are loads of other settings but no need to fiddle. But you should get on top of Asus features like AI NOS and PEG LINK. Check their website, see manual. If you go by default, install what you are told Im not sure pci-e video cards are not overclocked. Chipset can do that and more. Best to disable all that until more familiar with the beast. All these auto-tweaking features are not needed at all. Very easy to overclock/tweak manually. Your Nvidia drivers can take care of video, no need for Asus bios to get involved. At their website bookmark download page for AN832 SLI DELUXE. Get latest version of Asus Probe. Flashing bios should not be needed but keep eye on changelog. Beside that and chipset drivers you dont absolutely need more. Well you will want AMD cool&quiet driver http://www.amd.com/g...182_871_9706,00.html scroll down to "AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.3.1" Should also be on install cd.

Looking at manual:
(Im guessing most of it but will bet you can look what matters up at Corsair - or any Asus forum.

4.3.7
Here you see "Build date" of bios, probably also seen at bootscreen. Compare with Asus latest bugfixes at download page and see if any are relevant.

4.4.2
I would enable the Cool thing. I think default is mostly Enabled on NF4. Today there are few issues and it does lower temp/power consumption. Like it was not low enough ;) Should you start to use manual overclocking settings it can be disabled since it will have a hard time doing magic.

4.4.3 Where the fun are.
AI overclocking settings I have doubts about. Default is "Auto" but from manual it looks like you have to use "Manual" in order to "unlock" ability to change voltage. You can see that in menu straight away. Dont use "Standard", "Overclock Profile" or "AI NOS".

CPU FSB Frequency should be 200. Options determined by AI overclocking setting. "Manual" here lets you set 201, 202 and so on.

SB to NB - dont touch

Adjust PCIE Frequency - dont touch

PEG Link Mode - Auto is default, I would change to "Normal" = disabled, as said get to know what PEG Link does before using it. Is not needed at all. Again check some reviews like http://techreport.co...n32-sli/index.x?pg=1

A bunch of "Over-Voltage" settings - disable all of them.

DDR Vcore - is at "Auto" and could be wrong for your ram. Set it to 2.75v as Corsair say they have tested with. I would guess Auto means 2.6v.

FID/VID - no need to change "Auto" unless cpu is not detected properly. This is where you overclock manually. Manual unlocks next 2 settings.

Processor Frequency Multiplier - A 3700 will use 11 as multiplier.

Processor Voltage - should be 1.4v but I dont think all cpus, even same models, necessarily use same voltage. Dont remember what AMD calls it but something like "estimated". Could be 1.45v. Bios will pick that up automatically, is "written" on cpu so you can check with Asus Probe. But just keep FID/VID on auto and you cant fiddle with this.

DDR Clock Skew - definitely dont touch unless you find information at Corsair forum telling you.

4.4.4
1T/2T Auto will probably give you 2T. Test first with that, then try 1T. Gives a little boost and Im pretty sure most Corsair users will want 1T. Popular opinion is only crap ram cant do 1T. More about how well ram is in sync with bios/chipset than actual quality of ram. Not a matter of price either.

Memory setting - From the top: 200mhz, 2.5, 3, 6, 3. Rest is finetuning. Again, dont touch unless other users tell you it make sense. Check Corsair forum again.

4.4.5
Dont touch

4.4.8
Very important to disable "Legacy USB Support" since known to tricker false Memtest86 errors. Yes they say Auto means disabled if no devices detected but best to disable manually. Also mentioned in Corsairs guide on how to run Memtest86 http://www.houseofhe...owthread.php?t=38201

4.5.5
Asus Q-Fan should be enabled I think. Bios can control rpm according to what must be a preset of heat values. Some NF4 bios lets you select a value where fan should run 100% then 80% etc. Q-Fan might be controlled by software, Asus Probe perhaps. Even with overclocking you can probably make use of this since cpu runs so cool. No need for 3500rpm, more like minimum and medium during heavy load. May be newer bios than the one shown in manual have this, no reason not to enable. Also enable fan alarm should it get disconnected, same with cpu overheating. Might as well let bios do this.

Note what it says at 2.4.2 With 2 modules always use DIMM A1 and B1. Other combinations probably work but not so stable = Memtest86 errors or worse. Actually A1 and A2 could be the most stable but then you have not activated both channels and run single mode!

All the onboard gadgets you can disable/enable according to use. Best to do that before installing a million drivers in XP.

Silly bios if you ask me. Safe to fiddle with though, as safe as any other bios... Should it go all wrong then you just reset cmos and start all over with the many screens. May be 1/4 deserve attention, only a handful really important.

If all works out then you could go low power consumption and try 2.7v for ram, or 2.65v. Why use more than needed? Cant be sure what real voltage is delivered anyway. First checking Corsair forum for same mb/ram combination is good idea. For this you need more sensitive testing like Prime95 as I mentioned http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm Fire it up, chose Torture test and rest is matter of time. SP2004 has a better interface for P95 code http://sp2004.fre3.com/ does the same. Let it run while you zzzzzzz is best advice, 6 hours is minimum.

Should you get very experimental like trying 2-2-2-6 and 1T with 2.6v then remember it takes 1 second to blow up XP registry ;) Always use Memtest86 if you are not sure to get passed login. I would guess 1T works just fine but dont let XP be first program to test. Ram is about the only thing that is risky to play with, can be a pain to tweak/overclock. Cpu you and chipset can throttle up and down with mhz/multiplier not so with ram.

Btw, dont install Nvidia Firewall. Sometimes part of general chipset installation, sometimes separate.

What happens - check Corsair support forums if you get suspicious of something http://www.houseofhe...604b1a8d8d&f=128

Memtest must pass but in itself is not enough to prove 100% stability, not under any circumstance. Try Prime95 Blend test for many hours, set it to use 1gb so you can still compute. Prime95 is much more sensitive to timings, will tricker error where Memtest crunches on. Relevant if you overclock, tweak or ram is only 99% happy with motherboard or the other way around.

When I first ran test on newly bought Corsair ram they failed no matter how much I screamed. Could not figure it out, had read Memtest guides etc. Was sure timings were SPD, no mistakes. Went to Corsair and found others had same experience and a few had found solution. Use correct voltage! Corsair state voltage to be 2.7-2.8v - will encourage an increase if any problems. They also did that with my ram. Wrong. They use many different chips in their sticks, see http://www.houseofhe...owthread.php?t=44365 and it just happens that the one used in mine will not work properly with more than 2.6, may be 2.65. 2.7v and it fails even Memtest. List does not includes all chips btw, only those "inquired". Well, lowering voltage cured all problems and made Corsair investigate - weeks later they kept repeating standard reply of increasing voltage though. The opposite is true to other sticks with exact same Corsair model name - all depends on characteristics of chip used. Version number plus serial number identify chip.

My ram was of course misread by bios, timings all wrong. Make sure you get 2-3-3-6 as result of SPD/Auto. If not set them manually, as with voltage this is sometimes required.

Well benchmarks for browsers is like 3Dmark when both ATI and Nvidia were "creative". Not necessarily relate much to how real life browsing works. You run X process 1 time only, not 1000 so difference in "speed" are obvious ;)

24fun give 21 secs to a clean Firefox? I dont think so, try may be 8 secs if I remember correctly. Opera like 5.x secs on my computer last I tried. Opening of new windows is not fun for Firefox but say how much about speed? Is important - under benchmark conditions. Try add some extensions to Firefox, possible also gadgets on Opera, and see what happens. May be just change theme. Result can change dramatically, however browsing experience does not :) Good one is Adblock Plus, clearly a hit but also what makes many pages load faster. So slower benchmark means faster in real life, heh. Im sure all developers use these and more but not for popular consumption I think.

Strange with how "speed" is experienced. Opera scrolls pages like it was made for that purpose only, Firefox look like crap in comparison. Give bad impression, may be depends on mouse driver/features but certainly Opera seems much faster. Well then try add smoothwheel extension, set it up properly which is to your liking and then re-evaluate. Way better, way smoother of course - feels faster to me as well. I like it more than Operas "speed", almost too fast! A few extra cpu cycles is needed to make Firefox scroll pretty that is true.

Nice with so many benchmarks  :Thmbsup: Good for testing before/after adding whatever. I dont know about Opera but Firefox can certainly be "slowed down" by not so optimal add-ons.

IE7 rules and will decide what you see when browsing through Opera/Firefox - most of the world wont avoid it. So be happy for progress and may be also they declare addicted to standards and browser upgrades. That is new statements from Microsoft. Matters to Firefox/Opera users as well. Both Firefox and IE devs have said they are not that occupied by Acid2 for now - I assume they mean it is of little importance. Will be later, Firefox 3 pass it already as does Opera. IE7 will catch up if they live up to promises. IE7 is probably tied more to Vista than genuine desire to meet standards (MS could have made that years ago easy if they bothered) but still... No development was huge mistake by MS but IE7 is progress for world browsing no matter you dont like it too much.

Yeah well problem is shop dont have many 939 X2 cpus right? Could buy X2 3800 elsewhere. You like to watch TV, perhaps also video while working = more reason to buy dual. Ive had dual for some time now but can still remember the one core stutter while fiddling about. Went all bad when I got 2 monitors. Dual can have big effect with regular desktop work. With your budget it must fit in. 8 phase power circuit is not more important ;)

I did not mean to cut down on quality or specs when suggesting cheaper power supply/mohterboard - finding those extra 45-50£ for dual core cpu is possible without suffering. Motherboard is top model, too much unless very interested. Best to spend where output is recognized.

FSP Sparkle FSP400-60 Blue Storm 400W ATX2.0 PSU (CA-004-SK) for under half price of Antec is an example. Enermax Noisetaker 535W for 25 less another.

You could recycle your old memory? Idea is to have 2 working computers I guess. But as a temporarily solution to get dual it would work.

Special offer on your heavy duty motherboard http://www.microdire...551&GroupID=1088 Save 25£ - they also have X3800 for 939 socket. Not to make you nervous but while oc shop looks nice they dont have the best reputation. Good at sending out items, bad with RMA/service. Might be worth a Google search, some I trust have had bad experiences - you find them every where but at some point there are too many.

Might have to spend a bit more on video card then. Good find that 7300GT since it have DDR3 memory = higher mhz than DDR2. Be sure you check if card has DDR3 or DDR2, ocuk version is really cheap. OEM/reference card but not so important. Getting close to a 7600GS instead judging from a quick look...

Hmm, with your very new and changed budget  8) there just got to be room for dual-core. And even if you dont plan to upgrade it is "wrong" to buy DDR1 today, at least when price is about the same. Both Intel and AMD are going DDR2 so cant argue. AM2 might also offer a bit extra speed, a little. More about doing the right thing!

So I would cut down on power supply, ram and motherboard for a dual core cpu. If you go AM2 you see wider selection of X2 cpus - overclockers UK shop? and extra cost is only 45£ for a 3800. Should be easy to find. Good idea to pay a little extra for passive cooled motherboard, 125 might be over the top though? Model you picked is overkill with some features. Not like you are going to enjoy 8 phase power design or ADVANCED passive cooling prepared for water cooling and what not, dual core you will notice :) Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe for AM2 has a simple heatpipe and almost allow dual core cpu. Why have such a hefty power supply? Very easy to find more than adequate alternative and the last £ for dual core. DDR2 should cost about the same.

Well Intel cpus are ahead right now so if you go for most value/speed for money I guess you should compare with Intel setup, based on one of these beast http://www.overclock...ntium_Core_Duo2.html

To f0dder, just so you dont think Firefox developers are fat and lazy check this http://weblogs.mozil...archives/009620.html From one of those who push buttons when it comes to decision making. Look at it this way, you are witness to an evolution ;) Usually those who complain about slow startup have real problem delaying process so I doubt improving startup is high on their agenda. They probably count on new bookmarks/history handling to cut some 0.xs

Not closing Firefox is best solution, use Strokeit or something.

You could try out Preloader https://sourceforge....rojects/ffpreloader/ Works on 2 but seem to take out session restoring. Also I think you have to "reload" it for every change made to extensions etc. I only tried for few minutes. Dont see 10 seconds or close/start over and over so not really much benefit.

Some get high cpu usage because of mouse driver being stupid, autoscroll or whatever. Many bugs are possible. Ive also read halfdead LIVE bookmark feeds can increase startup time a lot. Could be hidden somewhere if bookmark file is huge. Clean profile should not have problems. They claim to have improved start a bit with version 2. 3 should be faster still because of new bookmarks/history format. Dont think there are any tricks to do execept perhaps preloader.

Nvidia Soundstorm was very very good and yet they took it out for some reasons not known to normal humans/buyers. Were there not talk about Nvidia getting into sound card market? Soundstorm just too good, several years old now. Big mistake to think we get the best of what is available.

I read a review of Intels HD audio, more or less concluded it was about marketing with higher numbers than before. Not really that relevant to majority of users. But worked as promised. Think they rated it on level with Audigy not Audigy 2 - not too bad for something you get for free. Or will there be premium price for HD audio? If thrown around like cheap Realtek chips product is very nice no matter marketing. Creative still score many points thanks to game developers who optimize for their drivers. Will be hard to beat as long as they rule market.

Same with Firefox and extensions. Even on Firefox forums you can find warnings against 2 because it "break" things. Earlier releases were no exceptions, just the nature of releasing something new.

Canons prettty good printing tools for IE are history as well. There are probably other stories.

Minimizing Firefox instead of closing is imporant to mention since you experience long startup time, is difference 1 or 2 seconds?. You also care for memory usage so should enable that. Why let it sit on memory when not used? Might be good for slow connections/computers but I hardly notice restoring windows/tabs, an old workaround they still hang on to.

Try search Mozillazine for startup problems, high cpu usage at start or similar. Im not saying anything about IE weirdness as long as it can be fixed which occasionally is keyword for Firefox as well. Either you freak out after 1.xx second no matter what or there is a problem. If you find Firefox generally slower than IE7 there should be problem. Most can be fixed.

I still dont see how you can compare and expect same result. You can estimate or time Firefox 1 or 2 seconds slower - or "good amount" but would you not be surprised if they clocked the same? Gazillion of codelines initialized exactly same way? How likely is that? Do you think it would increase or decrease startup time for IE if it had same profile management as Firefox? Take a look at File Monitor during start and compare. Firefox will have more entries I bet, those 1-2 seconds are used :) So much easier to deal with these tiny problems when you feel you get more browsing power than with IE7 - or Opera for that matter. Not available elsewhere, well except other Mozilla products. Would you even be pleased if it was not "slow"? Face it, you dont like Firefox heh. Dump it. Whats wrong with Opera? - not just a browser?

They still can be - depends on each game and drivers and also on how much you ask. Even my old Realtek could imitate EAX, yeah right.. Worked much better with simple 2 speaker and no effects. I doubt any onboard can compete with latest higher end audio cards - not in combination with good speakers and latest games. Could be whatever dusty onboard is "ok" at a higher level than you expected. Equalizer can do wonders. If you have Creative SB10 onboard got to be better, SBlive is way better.

I think card should be placed in the slot which suits motherboard the best. Even if irq sharing is less a problem today you cant always pick and chose.

Anyway, when I had Realtek 650 onboard plus SBlive I had both enabled and in games there were not so much difference. With music SBlive were clearly better. Probably also in games but depends on setup. Some games might give problems with cpu use for onboard. Since Realtek 650 is kind of old, yours could be newer and so likely better, and your Creative card is ancient, SB10?, then I would put money on onboard being the better choice.

A really good onboard chip running as hardware not software is Creative Live! 24-bit chip. Why I bought my particular motherboard. I also have Audigy 2, very hard to give thumbs up or down to any of them. Audigy have better drivers for newer games though. That Live chip also comes on external card which should be cheap and may be worth to consider if you have sensitive ears/good speakers and onboard dissapoints.

The "banner" incident wouldnt be that on Myspace would it? Problem was not IE or XP but the fact that 1 million (I read 1 million infected!) did not upgrade to SP2 and so was asking for trouble. Headlines dont tell all story :) Many people who get infected cant be saved - and dont care either.

Ive forced myself to use IE7 last couple of days and certainly find Firefox is faster on the popular sites I travel. Could be due to pipelining, more caching and other tweaks. Difference not huge but noticeable on some sites, I feel the cache :) Also different way of using memory for sure. Differences, but not in a million years can they be deciding factor in chosing browser. Lightweight vs. hog dont make sense to me. Firefox will use availble and not used memory and ? Stability, speed, features/options is much more important, only Task Manager worries about memory. If slowdowns, crashes they are not releated to xxx amount of memory used but extension bugs, sometimes (but rarely with version 2) compatibility problems with X site, plugin bugs. There are no 1 monsterbug in Firefox making it use tons of memory for no reason at all, is what it is. Also no known monster memory leaks, may be 100s of minor bugs/leaks but that will always be the case. Firefox 3 pass Acid2 test since long, 2 do not and never will so ? Why should Firefox be identical in use and startup time to a whole different product I dont really know. If you only used programs with least memory, startup time - would you have the "best"? If that is theory uninstall as directed by Task Manager. Turn off java, javascript, flash and other buggy evils. Go minimal.

Minimize "trick" shows how Mozilla devs are thinking. No memory is released because of a little speed advantage. They have strange ideas, also wont include true RSS reader in browser - other pet ideas exists. Well, revert that to normal behavoir and where did problem go? Again shows "problem" is merely visual providing setup is healthy of course. Crash-happy, slow with more than X tabs, major problems at Gmail or other motorway and there shall be much activity at Bugzilla - rest is in general optimization/bugfixing department.

Renegade, MS devs said they used popular IE6 bug-collecting websites. Look them up, will probably have "upgraded" as well. May be fixes are avaliable, if nothing else confirmaton.

Btw, one of the reasons "Media" talks so much about IE problems is 1. There have been so many through the years and 2. Microsoft responses to problems have often been provacatively slow at best. Took a while to fix IE6... Dont forget same company introduced tabbed browsing with MSN toolbar! I dont think Mozilla will cheer about more exploits but when/if they come see what happens. You are assuming they are helpless because of increased market share and forget much of the reasoning for Firefox are IE security/problems. They either do swift cleanup, live up to promises and expectations! - or close shop. Why assume they act like MS? Would be suicidal. Opensource powers will show as best/fastest way of dealing with security problems or die out. Same goes for Opera in a way. Only Microsoft can give finger for years and get away with it. Mozilla cant - keep checking those Secunia reports. Anyway, most "issues" are based on if and if lab-conditions but make good headline or 2. How many times have you been able to make a direct line between documented exploit and real life usage? I mean outside experimental sites. Happens, but not often. Most is BS about all popular browsers after SP2 - coding makes it into popular channels with other agenda. I can think of worse user problems than a little browser, like doing simple OS upgrading (Myspace again). No reason to pad MS on back but at least follow best practices and install latest updates. Most problems will magically go away (included in best practices is foolproof test of all incomings) And do check OS/other software exploits on security sites before those of browsers - only top of iceberg. http://www.morgud.co...eat-simulator-v2.asp I tried his old version, not doing it again. Kind of depressing unless you are living in a fort. Not even sure I should give link but shows how crap can survive and breed. Best practice should kick in, ignore link :)

f0dder, last chance of improving startup time could be an optimized Firefox. I use this one http://www1.plala.or...software.html#FFINFO  because it supports new spellchecker, others do not. Optimize to your cpu. Turn off antiphishing, session saving just to test. I really cant understand you consider startup time a major problem. I just restored my fat Firefox with 10 tabs, I would call it fast even! Solution is of course to minimize not close but you wont listen  :D FF does not in any way hog your fast computer while minimized - not unless there are other problem. You are deeply into land of personal preferences I think, some have same feelings towards new theme. Preferences is exactly what FF is good for but you cant really change much about startup speed. Adjust habits or suffer. FF quickly catches up once it gets going.

ATI pure drivers plus ATI Tray Tools is a wicked combination you would like but actually I like Nvidias approach to driver interface better. At least they are aware how people use desktop, have added some goodies/extras. Just the fact they keep updating that big pdf-file of changes give some points. Latest control gadget is on level with ATI .net panel I think. Both keep upgrading so none are perfect - these type of drivers can never be perfect, everything about them is non-static. Some games/game engines will look better with ATI, others run a little faster with Nvidia.

Ive read latest drivers fix some problems with Nvidia firewall - heard that before and hard to get over old ones. And very much too late if they really have made it stable. Like with Firefox memory usage I dont buy popular opinions unless gun in back but try "bsod nvidia firewall" or something in Google. Amazingly buggy feature/implementation. VIA would never get away with similar, shows how great NF4 is. To really make use of hardware firewall you have to enter ports/programs, default have zero entries so all is running off software! Good idea since problems multiply when hardware is activated... Interface way too complicated for most, geeky firewall it is. You can download fat userguide at Nvidia site, how many will read that? Well you can make a batch file for edting/stopping/starting services, no need for Apache and I think 1 more service unless you edit configuration - default is very scary. Dont work that great in Firefox either! Not surprisingly they have left out firewall in later chipsets :) Guess real problem could not be solved through drivers. They should have warned against own product - not easy to fix in hardlock mode. When firewall mess up there will be problems, on level with disk/video drivers. Only general problem with NF4 I know of. Ive had tons of problems with my MSI motherboard but due to their crappy bios support not chipset. When major annoyances are known and people still have to wait months and several releases for obvious fundamental fixes support is no good. How it goes, may be Gigabyte or whowever is sleeping today. All the same to me - you cant even pay premium price and expect much better. Too many products too fast. If I was to buy new motherboard today I would hunt down some user forums and check severity/local relevance of problems and what is being done about them. Also goes for Asrock even if about only solution for this cheap upgrade. I guess NF4 motherboards have gone down in price but at the time of Asrock SATA2 release it cost like 50% of basically identical NF4 model. A bit weak on more than semi-overclocking/overvolting but rest is pretty good - more so if you have AGP card. May be even DDR1 ram though I know nothing about their AM2 add-on card. Board also support AM2 cpu of course ;)

You should separate "brands" into good buys or not so good buys instead of xxx is crap. Does not hold much water. Look at the whole range of products, then select and compare - find pros and cons. History is few months with these things. Nvidia hardware/drivers have one too. Even NF4. A major feature was hardware based firewall, yeah right. Speaking of useless drivers/software and corruption not much beat that. Rest is fine but nothing is perfect. NF2 also has history of data corruption btw. still the first really good chipset for AMD cpu and overclockers :) Dont be loyal to brands or listen to old ATI or whatever stories (f0dders  :D ) I loved old VIA chipset from KT133 to KT333 because they were so tweakable - also was nightmare for many not so interested in fiddling (about the time where Intel was boring but ever so "stable" as opposed to... - then came Nvidia and saved buyers/AMD). Go to Nvidias official forum and look for tears and sweat and find same stories you might read about ATI/VIA, ups and downs and it continues.

Seems to me all the big players share market between them while laughing 8) Conspiracy. When someone like ULI comes along and make much cheaper chipsets, but with competitive and unique features, they are quickly bought up by one of the oldies. Prefer fixed environment, not too much innovation. Small steps so not to disturb upgrade logic. They all want your money.

Also remember when it comes to motherboards much is decided by maker not only chipset provider. They select components, how much they will support before moving on etc. They get a reference bios but up to maker to adjust specific product - some spend more hours on that than others. Again you will see same pattern, some products nice - others only give problems. Asus, MSI, Abit or whoever dont really matter. Dont make sense to dismiss X or praise Z in general terms - none of them deserve that. There is only changing good and not so good buys.

Example from real life. My sister got a Nvidia 6600GT video card. On VIA KT600 chipset graphics are corrupted big time in 3D, but only in D3D - Opengl is fine. Look it up on Nvidia forum, 6600GT stories are not all positive even if a big seller for Nvidia. Too lazy to find link but the thread about 6600GT is 10 mile long... Well, nothing worked so I changed motherboard to NF2 and voila perfect 3D in all modes. Does that make VIA crap for the xx time? Do all 6600GT cards blow on that chipset? Not necessarily, get used to "issues" ;)

You can get PCI-E based tv-cards - or PCI-E All-in-Wonder. More pci-e slots? Cant have it all but 3xpci, 1xagp, 2xpci-e should be enough for what you ask. Have to play along Asrock specs for this cheap solution. Not that they are bad.

Yep and VIA - Asus budget is more budget than Asrock. You will need 1 pci or sound card alone. Better than onboard even if you dont game. Those shops are busy with all the new stuff but since this is introduced about August Im sure it will pop up somewhere. More than a few think why buy new PCI-E when happy with AGP! Typical computer business, you need strange ULI chipset and less than famous brand to get more choices. Nvidia have bought ULI btw.

I would also prefer shop for this - or a smaller shopping/2nd hand community where people can be looked up in details. I generally dont trust so many online, others have used ebay with success  8)

When not thinking about money it sure is. Well yes, looks like the "old" popular 939Dual-SATA is on its way out but replaced by 939Dual-VSTA where VSTA stands for you know what. http://forums.ocwork...12633433&t=54129 also links to the most active Asrock forum. A few improvements perhaps, basically same product. That forum is where you look up "issues". I doubt VSTA is discontinued though those UK sites I checked seems to focus on new AM2/DDR2 motherboards.

Asus have this with AGP support http://uk.asus.com/p...=743&modelmenu=2 I would much prefer Asrock. Got to be available somewhere.

Even without DX10 requirement new All-in-Wonder will kill budget. Also have to be careful about power supply - some motherboards more or less require 24 pin, a few dont suppport anything else. 20->24pin converter might work. I would put some money on Asrock being happy with current psu providing you keep AGP video card.

No, Asrock is not more powerhungry because it supports AGP. One or the other. Also it use 20pin + 4pin not 24 pin. Since you will recycle video card and new cpu has good mileage I would guess you can get away with old power supply. Motherboard only use passive cooler for chipset - might indicate it does not consume that much. Cpu, videocard is what matters the most anyway so you should be safe. No gurantee just because pure specs says load is about the same. Depends on how psu is designed. If psu cant handle this setup new will be needed no matter hardware = nothing lost in trying.

Remember DX10 so resist getting expensive DX9 card today. Another reason you should take advantage of being happy with what you got - on new motherboard. There might be equally cheap or better alternatives for this if you buy pci-e card but for budget upgrading you are stuck with Asrock :)

Speed increases speak very much against replacing what is broken with old stuff - you will notice.

New AM2 or better Intel duo beast definitely require new power supply plus new memory - and new video card. So a different budget. 939 socket like this is best option to keep some money left.  Seems they just dumped Asrock motherboard on that shop but total price must be around 100£. Can get it in other shop, very popular model I think. Compare.

If you consider this option state what video card you have. I would not be surprised if there are some compatibility issues with either AGP or PCI-E - or both! This can be found out before purchase. Real life users know more than a page full of review links.
