that's a nice idea.
one extra benefit of keeping this kind of list of history of when each program was run for the first time, is that it could be very helpful for diagnosing problems that you only notice a day later, etc.  and could help you diagnose a problem on a relative's computer.
note that for this kind of benefit, it doesnt have to ever kill anything.. it's just trying to track when a process first ran -- the nice part about that is how simple it would be to use, nothing to it.
maybe you could make it run two dif modes: 1) kill anything on blacklist but dont kill new programs; 2) kill everything not on whitelist
so if you only wanted to use it to keep track of the first time a program ever ran, you would just use mode 1.

I think it might be nice just to have a program that made a list of the first time it saw any given program run for the first time and saved that to a nice text file, so i could always check that file and see when a new program was discovered running for the first time.  and maybe show in tray a balloon each time a new program was discovered running that had never been seen before.

This could be useful.. there are already some programs for this but i think there is always room for more that are nice and simple to use.

I see a couple of issues to think through:
  • How do you add new applications to the list of allowed programs?
  • If a virus only needs half a second to infect your computer -- you aren't really going to be able to stop it just by watching background process list -- for that you need an antivirus style hook that catches files before they can execute.
  • But still it could be useful to alert you about new programs you've never seen before that are running.

i wonder if this means there is room for a major search engine player that had a system similar to google's pageranking, but specifically spread negative scores based on sites actually selling products.. so a site selling products would spread it's negative energy to sites that link to it, etc.

this would penalize some good honest sites, so you wouldn't want it as your only search engine, but it might be useful when searching for reviews and things that are otherwise dominated by commercial entities trying to game the system.

the problem of course is that there is much more money in what google does -- putting ads on everything and raking in money from seo experts trying to game the system for profit.

regarding the suggestions that companies not be evil in terms of trying to trick people into a false sense of security, all well and good -- but for this award i think we want it to avoid any kind of subjective judgement.

there's plenty of room for full reviews written by lots of sites to tell us a more detailed description of what's good and bad about a particular antivirus and the company.

but what i have in mind for this particular thing is a kind of certification/award that describes a very clear and concise set of objective and strict requirements that a company can decide that they want to meet in order to get this certificate, and have it mean something important.

Living Room / Infectious Greed: Dishwashers, and How Google Eats Its Own Tail
« Last post by mouser on December 20, 2009, 03:13 AM »
Looks like I have a new site to put on my regular reading list. This is a nice summary of why google ads are corrupting web searches and making it hard to find useful content.

Over the weekend I tried to buy a new dishwasher. Being the fine net-friendly fellow that I am, I  began Google-ing for information. And Google-ing. and Google-ing. As I tweeted frustratedly at the tend of the failed exercise, "To a first approximation, the entire web is spam when it comes to appliance reviews".  This is, of course, merely a personal example of the drive-by damage done by keyword-driven content -- material created to be consumed like info-krill by Google's algorithms.
...
Google has become a snake that too readily consumes its own keyword tail. Identify some words that show up in profitable searches -- from appliances, to mesothelioma suits, to kayak lessons -- churn out content cheaply and regularly, and you're done. On the web, no-one knows you're a content-grinder.  The result, however, is awful. Pages and pages of Google results that are just, for practical purposes, advertisements in the loose guise of articles, original or re-purposed. It hearkens back to the dark days of 1999, before Google arrived, when search had become largely useless, with results completely overwhelmed by spam and info-clutter.  Google has to know this. The problem is too big and too obvious to miss. But it's hard to know what you can do algorithmically to solve the problem. Content creators are simply using Google against itself, feeding its hungry crawlers the sort of thing that Google loves to consume, to the detriment of search results and utility.
...
Something has to give, but I wonder what will -- the snake, its tail, or us?

wanted to add that i think if you create a new website with some substantial info about something that is useful for people, and is in same spirit of promoting free information (not a business site designed to make you money!), this should count as NANY or mini-NANY too.

BrowserTraySwitch / Re: Browser tray switch & firefox Profiles
« Last post by mouser on December 19, 2009, 09:30 AM »
Ok i *think* i can take a guess about this..

The way BrowserTraySwitch (now) works, is that is saves snapshots of the current DEFAULT settings.

When you use a commandline parameter to launch firefox with a certain profile, it's actually telling firefox NOT to change the default setting, and only to run one time with your specified profile.  So when you tell BrowserTraySwitch to memorize the current default settings, there is nothing for it to record.

So i think the first step would be to try CHANGING THE DEFAULT PROFILE in firefox to each of your different profiles in turn, and asking BrowserTraySwitch to save each time you do as a new configuration.

Now if that does not work, which it may not, it just probably means that BrowserTraySwitch is not memorizing the registry value that stores the value saying what profile is set in FireFox (assuming that it is a registry settings).  If that's the case, contact me and i'll see if i can add it (and if you can find the registry setting that records what profile is set as default that would help).

actually people can and do make a living betting on such public things -- betting on the horses is a good example.

the key is that you don't have to beat the house/bookmaker, the way you do when playing roulette in a casino -- you only have to be better than the other bettors.
17499
this is actually a really interesting idea.. i have no idea but i'd love to hear what people recommend.

hmm this is an interesting finding.. i suppose the first step might be for us to figure out if this happens with every fsubscript plugin, every fscript plugin, or what.. that would be our first clue about where to look.
