Is it LessPass?

Keep in mind that, as f0dder mentioned in that thread (well, he linked to something written by someone else), these kinds of password generators have drawbacks that may not be readily apparent. So if you can find the one you used to generate your passwords, you may want to consider moving to a different password system.

If that's not the one, then as I said, perhaps you should check out the LastPass Alternatives thread.

Good luck!

I'd forgotten about that one, and I'm the OP.  I think the concerns there are expressed in the blocks I quoted above, i.e. the lack of the salt, as it's not stored.  Been trying to find an alternative; xmarks' deprecation was more of a reason for me to find something rather than LastPass breaches.  Tried sticky password on recommendation from here; even bought a lifetime license.  But performance issues already have me regretting that decision.

So mainly in an attempt to make our life simpler and actually get this done, I'm suggesting that the money go to coders who are forum regulars who are identifiable as people who code things in request to or interaction with users on the forum.  This can stretch beyond coding snacks but the idea is the same.

That sounds like a plan.  And a good one! ;D

If this is generally acceptable, the only question left is who else besides skwire should get some of the first $1,000 we give out?  It's very easy to overlook folks, so please chime in and nominate yourself.

That's one of the things I love about this site... the coders here aren't really arrogant or doing it out of a need/want for recognition, but a love of the software.  So it's quite unlikely that many will nominate themselves.  But skwire list is a good start.

One category I think is left out though... people who provide support on the board, but aren't necessarily coders.  They keep the board going, by answering questions, doing research, and other varied things.  It basically makes the board a clearing house for issues, which I think keeps it vibrant.  tomos, cranioscopal, and rgdot are the ones that I think top that list, though there are others also.

There's a chrome browser extension called hashpass: https://github.com/stepchowfun/hashpass

That repository has links to some other implementations (Android, python, etc) in case you were using this or some variation on it.

Nice!  Of note from the repo:

Suppose your secret key is bananas, and you're signing up for Facebook. Hashpass combines the current domain name and your secret key with a / as follows: www.facebook.com/bananas. It then computes the SHA-256 hash of that string. Then it hashes it again and again, 2^16 times in total. Finally, it outputs the first 96 bits of the result, encoded as 16 characters in Base64. In this example, the final output is sWwtmA9uA6X9SyXD. This result can be reproduced using the Python script near the bottom of this document.

Looks pretty nice.  Might start using that instead of the LastPass extension.  A bit more work, but worth it, I think.

A couple of warnings from them:
If an adversary has your secret key, they have access to all of your accounts. Hashpass never reveals your secret key. But we must make sure that an adversary can't determine it from the generated passwords.

-snip-

A common defense against these attacks is to add random bits to your key. This is called a salt, and it ensures you don't use the same key as anyone else. Most security software will automatically add a salt to your key and store it. Since Hashpass doesn't store anything, it cannot add a salt for you. It is up to you to pick a key with enough entropy to defend against dictionary attacks. Longer is better. More random is better. Don't use a single word. Definitely don't use bananas. Hashpass doesn't limit the size of your secret key—take advantage of this.

its certainly possible - I had (have) an old iriver DAC that used the audio jack for charging, data transfer, and playback

And mentioning that, the iPod Shuffle (which I still have due to the fact that I waterproofed one and it's good for swimming) uses the audio jack for charging.

I do agree that skwire should get a good portion of the proceeds, but I also think that focusing on coding snacks excludes a lot of people that just don't do the coding snacks, but more indepth things, and not just for NANY.  Just my opinion on that.

Hash programs do that. Is it possible it simply hashed the text?

Don't Think so, but I have been known to be wrong a time or three.  :o

Check at https://www.md5hashgenerator.com/ with a phrase that you know you used.  If it matches the 'password' then that might be what it's doing.  Of course, that's only MD5, so it might not match and that still be what it was doing.

 but yes as wraith said was not about need

If the writing idea is implemented I think I can participate. Which reminds me to write a mini review of the software I won in the giveaway, hopefully by weekend  :-[

Which software did you receive?  Just curious.  I have to start writing my reviews, so don't feel bad  :-[

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Alias: WolframAlpha Search

So, downloaded plug-in and took a look at the alias file.  The command is

Code: Text [Select]
  1. http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=$$u1

So it takes the input verbatim, and doesn't do anything with it other than add it to the end of the url.

Is there any facility for processing the input without making a plugin, mouser?

Her very latest video has taken a sad turn though, as she posts about her discovery that she has a brain tumor.  She talks about her upcoming operation.

It does seem a really sad turn, especially after seeing her in the other videos.  While she's serious, she does seem to be upbeat though, which will hopefully serve her well in the fight.

I would increase the coders amount, that includes yourself of course.

DC receives a small but regular (though long-term unpredictable) stream of donations year round, and many of these are sent to me directly in the form of donationcredits; furthermore, I get some small number of commercial license purchases for my software through the site.  And DC is not my full time job.  In short, I do not need to receive any of the fundraiser money.

I don't think that rgdot was talking about 'need'

You do a lot- and a lot that people don't see.  We just appreciate that!   8)

...and it's gone.  It's not even redirecting when you go to xmarks.com.  It's just not resolving.

Mouser has said that he's not going to add it to his apps, so I don't think that there is anything wrong with taking it.

My mutt and other creatures! kids

I know you're a supporting member...but people with 1 posts, posting a random link = doesn't look good.

Can you embed the images on the forum? :)
-Stephen66515 (April 29, 2018, 03:30 PM)

In my opinion, if someone is supporting, I wouldn't even say anything, unless going on archive.is proves it to be wrong.  They paid money at some point to support the site.  Surely that counts for something...

One of those links that I included (the cnet one) has the download of v3, which is the one that I have installed, and use.
That comes up with a Buy Now or Free Trial mode both of which require authorisation from the website which no longer exists.

If you are interested in trying this, I can give you access to my copy as it's abandonware ; they took out the checks in that copy.

Have tried chasing IdeaMason over the net. Seems it departed, was then resuscitated as v4 and then disappeared. People seem to have been unable to extract their data after a crash. One blog had posts recommending IdeaMason but the most recent posts were about OneNote. I think I will leave it there. I regard the ability to extract data etc without getting trapped in a proprietary format as vital, and it is a potential issue with all the databases.

Isn't this all just saying that Java 8 is reaching end of life and that we need to be upgrading to Java 9 and 10?

It could be... I see that there is a Java 9 SE and a Java 10 SE.  But I took it to mean that oracle would only distribute Java SE with the SDK for developers to distribute from the roadmap they quoted, instead of a centralized installation on the OS, i.e. the developers have to distribute a version with their software.  Sort of like what Shades is saying that he already does.

There are lots of forums to help you remove viruses / adware. I've used a couple over the years, probably mentioned them here somewhere.
Or try instructions as per multiple sites that tell you how to "remove BingSearchby". One I found was on malwaretips.com, appeared to give fairly sensible advice.

I've committed to doing some, as I'm the reason most of those are there.
Congratulations on getting so many

My interest is very much in an overall system and how each program can fit into that, so mini reviews of individual apps would not work for me. Not really a traditional comparative, concluding one is better than another either.

My interest is in a variety of writing - academic papers and books, reports, 'journalism', non-fiction as well as fiction. My observation over the years is that most students and researchers have massively suboptimal methods of managing their information, planning and structuring; OK for a single piece of work but incredibly inefficient if there's a series.

iirc I wrote a paper on the issue 10 or 20 years ago. To mostly little effect. I suspect pantsers proliferate in all fields, but it's harder to make it work with non-fiction. And some just prefer paper.

There was a piece of software that is not supported anymore, but they unlocked it before they faded- it was specifically for academics, but worked well enough for me.  I'll have to try to find it.

UPDATE: That was fast, just found it - IdeaMason.

http://www.bitsdujou...m/software/ideamason

http://download.cnet...2056_4-10398292.html

https://ideamason.wordpress.com/about/

That sounds like it would work for you.  I'd suggest you give it a try.

It's built on the idea that a paper is composed of several different things collected, sort of like what you said.  Ideas, quotes, citations, abstracts, summaries, sources- you store them and categorize them, and you can use them in different fashions to make a composition out of the parts- complete with cites.  It was way more than I needed, but did work for me for writing also.

I've committed to doing some, as I'm the reason most of those are there.  But the more the merrier!  I'm planning to do Atomic Scribbler (with the new Smart Edit integration in mind), Write!, ProWritingAid, and some of the others I've trialed will probably sneak in.

I was planning to do them one mini-review at a time, rather than comparatively, other than that section in the mini-review template.  So it looks like a different angle.

http://www.oracle.co...java/eol-135779.html

Did a search for "roadmap information for Java SE 8".

End of Public Updates for Oracle JDK 8
As outlined in the Oracle JDK Support Roadmap below, Oracle will not post further updates of Java SE 8 to its public download sites for commercial use after January 2019. Customers who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 8 or previous versions can get long term support through Oracle Java SE Advanced, Oracle Java SE Advanced Desktop, or Oracle Java SE Suite. All other users are recommended to upgrade to the latest major releases of the Oracle JDK or OpenJDK.

Oracle does not plan to migrate desktops from Java 8 to later versions via the auto update feature.  Individuals who require Java SE for non-corporate desktop use will continue to receive updates through at least December 2020.  Instead of relying on a pre-installed standalone JRE, we encourage application developers to deliver JREs with their applications.  More details will be made available through early 2018.

Emphasis mine.

You might check the quote below cut from here: https://blogs.oracle...tribution-of-java-se

As client application development continues to shift from the old “plugin” world to modern deployment, the need for a standalone Java Runtime Environment (JRE) that is installed centrally, separately from Java applications has diminished.  Using the ‘jlink’ tool introduced with JDK 9 will make it even easier for application developers to package and deploy dedicated runtimes rather than relying on a pre-installed system JRE.  Oracle will begin transitioning from the standalone architecture later next year in what will be a multi-year effort.

I think that if the keypress can be made so that it appears to come from the keyboard buffer then it'll work, (SendKeys uses Windows messages from what I understand).

It's been a while, but I must ask you guys again if there was some relatively simple solution to this?

I don't think that without someone writing something, there will be a relatively simple solution to this problem.  It pretty much goes against what the windows protection screen is intended to do, i.e. force the user to interact in order to get to the login.  This issue with the lock screen is real, but just not resolved.

A post from Zachd from Microsoft
Howdy!  I wrote this code.  You mentioned that the Slideshow always "starts with" the last selected image under Lock Screen -> Background -> Picture.  That is incorrect.  Instead, please understand that the Lock Screen -> Background -> Picture image is shown until the Slideshow itself is ready to start.

This is a feature of the slideshow and how it works.  It is impossible to not have it work this way.  I understand what you're going for here, but -- that is not how it works.  We try to optimize as much as we can, but until the Lock Screen Slideshow has loaded things up and is ready to go we display the selected Picture.  Otherwise you'd be seeing nothing at all for that duration, and that's no fun. :)

Cheers!

Speaking for myself only.

Is this when the system is locked or when you fully reboot the system?  When the system is restarted, or when a user logs out, the default picture (the cave) is used until a user logs in.
