ok so we know your work problem is happening on latest version of LBC.
it would help me hugely if you could figure out if your other pc still is free of this problem and if so what version of LBC it is.

very nice gesture tinjaw
(i think your initial instinct was right to just give them away to someone who knows they will really use them rather than do contest).
maybe list what books they are?

the first video i tend to make is a super quick couple minute demo of all the features i think are interesting.. i explain that i'm going to go into more detail in subsequent videos and that this first one is just a whirlwind tour.

one thing you might do while i look into this is disable scheduled update checking from within farr, and just check for updates manually.  won't solve your problem per se, but will stop it from happening while you aren't around.

does the computer you are using go to sleep/standby/hibernate ?

Really nice

If i could offer one additional suggestion it would be to make several really short video tours of the software.

I have come to believe that a bunch of short ~3 minute videos can do more to show people basic concepts and help them understand the software and whether they might want to use it, than a hundred 100 pages and screenshots.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Search by history (preferently)
« Last post by mouser on February 16, 2010, 12:43 PM »
Just to understand the robot.... Why do I have to delete the entry to get it working?

i can explain.. the farr robot is very good at his job, but sometimes he is very reluctant to ever use his judgment over a human's judgment, even when he is very confident the human might be wrong.

in this case, he uses the history score value to set the initial score for the launched item *at the time when he FIRST adds a new launched history item*.

after the first time it is added, he assumes you may want to modify that score yourself manually, and so he will not try to "fix" it if he sees it at an unusual value.

so when you changed the scoring value to 10,000 -- he assumed you were telling him that all NEWLY added items should have the higher score, but he was afraid to increase the values for the existing items, just in case you wanted them to stay where they were.

---

ps. the auto ceiling is used because each time you launch something that has already been launched, it's score will grow just a tiny bit, and that value controls how high it will grow.

ok, couple of options here.

First, it sounds like you figured out the right way to do it in general, but it may require both of these values to be changed; i should probably make this a little simpler so that if the Auto Ceiling is lower than History File Bonus, it is additive:
Screenshot - 2_16_2010 , 10_23_39 AM.png

So first thing to do would be change both of these values to be really high, and then also go into the Launch History and either delete it or manually edit score for it in order to get it into the proper range.

...

the other solution is to add an explicit alias for your bat file with the name of p.  You can do this by simply searching for it, then right clicking on result and choosing to add a new alias group, and name your new alias p.

...

let me know if it works for you.

great stuff -- I think this tool could also serve as a good starting point for anyone who wants to know how to let farr search a list of items that is dynamically extracted from another program.

Living Room / Blog Essay: In Praise of Online Obscurity
« Last post by mouser on February 16, 2010, 07:21 AM »
Nothing really surprising here, but I think as people get wrapped up in trying to get bigger and bigger, they can fail to recognize the downsides of this..

When it comes to your social network, bigger is better. Or so we’re told. The more followers and friends you have, the more awesome and important you are. That’s why you see so much oohing and aahing over people with a million Twitter followers. But lately I’ve been thinking about the downside of having a huge online audience. When you go from having a few hundred Twitter followers to ten thousand, something unexpected happens: Social networking starts to break down.

Living Room / Re: Low-cost laptop in February 2010. Comments anyone?

sounds like a good plan and the acer's seem like fine machines.  and i've come to think that having a cheap laptop for testing and contingency use is something that is very useful.

the only thing i would recommend is the same thing i recommend before purchasing any pc -- look on newegg and amazon (and the web in general) for reviews of the machine you are planning to buy and make sure there are no show-stopping issues.

make sure you have a usb external hard drive to help you back up the system and move stuff back and forth, etc.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Suggestion: arrow keys to scroll result list
« Last post by mouser on February 15, 2010, 10:30 AM »
im afraid the nature of the way farr currently stores results makes it necessary to always rerun the search when you ask for more results, no matter which option you check.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Suggestion: arrow keys to scroll result list
« Last post by mouser on February 15, 2010, 09:52 AM »
why is it +sall only shows the *pure* matches (whatever that is)?

that is show when the following option is checked:
Screenshot - 2_15_2010 , 9_49_41 AM.png

basically it cuts down on the noise by not matching non-contiguous in this case.
uncheck the option to have it find all matches including non-contiguous ones.

I think there are some cool functions in this latest release, most notably the PgDn feature much requested to find more results, and a new option to specify simulated search text on blank search.

Special thanks to DC member ewemoa for helping me test and providing so many good ideas.

New *BETA* release (not available yet through updater, grab from url in first post):

Version 2.84.01 - February 15, 2010 - BETA
  • [BugFix] - Search directories were not expanding environmental variables.
  • [Feature] - Added /hideifnoexist (hide the result if the file specified does not exist)
  • [BugFix] - Result labels for items with /options could be messed up (hopefully i haven't broken anything while fixing this)
  • [Feature] - Added new ability to specify search text to simulate on blank search box.  By setting text here you are asking FARR to simulate a specific search when there is nothing in the search edit box.  Useful if for example you want to specify the contents of an alias result on blank search.
  • [BugFix] - An alias result that starts with %uservar.% will be replaced prior to being listed -- useful for using user variables for paths, etc.; in the past the resolution happened only at launch time.
  • [Feature] - Typing just +modifierkeyword to restrict search to certain directories will now list those directories.
  • [MinorFeature] - Search text is added to search history when FARR is minimized or enter is pressed in search window.
  • [Feature] - You can now hit PgDn from search box to tell FARR to find *ALL* results, not just the few that normally fit in the window; You can continue to hit PgDn and PgUp to page through results after that.  When more results available the statusbar now hints about PgDn.
  • [MinorFeature] - A few tweaks that may speed up search a tiny bit.
  • [BugFix] - Option to show on taskbar was not working.
  • [BugFix] - Attempting to improve a black flicker on win7 (or slow pcs) when auto-resizing window.
  • [MinorImprovement] - Improved search directory keyword modifier instructions.
  • [Feature] - New option to disable non-contiguous searching when in Show All (+sall or PgDn) mode, to help weed out extraneous matches and speed up search (set by default).
  • [BugFix] - Hopefully fixed bug that could cause crash if exiting while searching.
  • [Feature] - Added ability for plugins to add items to launch and search history (addlaunchhistory, addsearchhistory).
  • [BugFix] - The myaliases.alias file (where custom user aliases are stored) was not being created on the first run for a new user (only on second run).

When there's not many pegs left, assassin too often just goes out of bounds, then on your next shot, there's nothing you can do because assassin is still active, you shoot, and the assassin just heads straight out of play..

hahahaha.
don't fix this please! it's just one of the things that makes Twigatelle so cool.

i'm having a hard time figuring out how to fix this because i can't reproduce the problem, or tell difference in speeds.

can any of you who have experienced this clearly reproduce it (ie you can clearly and reliably tell the speed difference as you switch between these settings), and is willing to help me beta test a fix?
