LaunchBar Commander / Re: Bug: Icons get switched around
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2010, 03:01 PM »
I've noticed this in the past with other really old-school looking icons.  Like, maybe they are programs that haven't been updated since Windows98 days.

ah yes, that is part of a new feature i introduced.  microsoft pays me a nickel every time one of my programs behaves badly with regard to outdated versions of windows -- helps them force people to upgrade.  ;)

see if you can figure out what file or icon caused the error -- that would help a lot in terms of tracking it down.

if you exit and restart, does the problem go away?

1) It would be convenient to be able to drag-and-drop an application onto a dock or menu to add the app to the dock or menu.

doesn't LBC already support this -- only limitation is you have to drag to an empty space.
16959
6) Multiple monitor support - I can't be specific here but it appears that LBC is not aware of configurations including multiple monitors. On many occasions LBC appeared to loose track of the location of a window/dock/menu when it was displayed on a second monitor.

i have noticed this occasionally myself -- one trick seems to be to undock the launch bar, move it to the monitor you want it to dock to (leaving it undocked) and place it there floating, then dock it.  that is, it seems one of the ways it gets confused if it was never undocked on the monitor it lives on.

General Software Discussion / Re: e-mail privacy
« Last post by mouser on February 20, 2010, 03:56 PM »
I would like to try this but I do not know where the REPLY-To field is.  I only see a from field.
this will depend on your email client -- if you are using web-based email you might not have this option.

it's a very interesting issue -- it can't be done in the way you are wanting, with a program embedded in the email.

but it might be possible by specifying non-real FROM info, and using your real email only in the "REPLY-TO" field.

the only danger in this case might be that it might increase the chance of your email being marked as spam.

i'm curious to hear what others think.

Find And Run Robot / Re: don't return aliases unless regexp matches exactly
« Last post by mouser on February 20, 2010, 09:01 AM »
regex aliases wont return matches unless they match exactly..
the only exception to this is if there is a partial match to the NAME of the alias.. this can be exploited to give you hints;
to turn it off, just delete the alias name (or make it something like "__myname").

i know that's not the most obvious solution, just emerged as the evolution of alias groups.. i'll see if i cant improve this in the future.

Find And Run Robot / Re: score based on history for individual searches
« Last post by mouser on February 20, 2010, 08:09 AM »
this is an interesting request; i know it's been touched on in the past but you've explained it quite well.

i guess the first answer is that you can't currently do exactly this in farr, though you can get pretty close by using FARR aliases.  it might pay to tweak the aliases a bit to make it almost exactly what you are asking for, but let me explain how you would do it first in farr.

in farr, you would do this using ALIASES (not search score patterns).

as an example you say:
in QS you can right-click an item in the results list and choose 'make this default for <current search text>'.

in farr, you would right click, and say "add this to alias group" -> New group.
then you would use the search text you want as the alias group name.

just creating this alias will normally do everything you want, give it a higher score as long as what you are typing matches an alias -- and the closer to the alias name the higher the score.

it would be fairly easy to automatically keep a list of [search terms , item launched] pairs, and boost those scores in the future, and let users manually tweak those pairs, which i think would do what you are asking -- i suppose it's easy enough to do that it's worth doing.  i guess this could even be added to the launch history and just give a generic bonus to previously launched files, and then an extra boost if the search term exactly meets what you searched for before.

on the other hand, i guess you could say the current farr philosophy would be that if you use the same search to find a file over and over again, you might consider creating an explicit alias for it using the method i described above -- so in your case you would create 2 aliases, one fro "dr" and one for "drop".

we are just starting to get organized to get back in the habit of doing more giveaways and discounts again.. we would be happy to include the copies you have to give away in our monthly drawings here.  or you could do what many sites do which is to ask people who want to win to post a comment your page and choose randomly from those at the end of some deadline.

i tested on win7 and it seemed to work, so that's strange that it's working for some people and not others..

you shouldn't have to do anything but trigger the screen capture -- honestly i have never heard of this happening before.. it's beyond strange.
If you trigger a capture of the "Wordkspace" (Ctrl+PrtScr by default), what happens then?

General Software Discussion / Re: Why the aversion to .NET Frameworks?
« Last post by mouser on February 18, 2010, 03:53 AM »
I have a different reason for so-far avoiding getting into dot net, as a programmer.

I really like a LOT of what they have done with it, but i'm not going to embrace a new giant powerful framework that doesn't have first-class cross platform support as one of it's main goals.

Only thing I'm waiting for is a feature to exclude large files from the image backup.

good to point out how needed this is; acronis has had it for a while and it makes a big difference.

just used Macrium to backup a netbook -- i think acronis has finally outlived it's usefulness for me, mainly because of how invasive and bloated it has become.  was quite pleased with Macrium.

I just finished Gallistel's "Memory and the Computational Brain"; not as good a read as Organization of Action/Learning but kind of an important book for neuroscientists to read.  Well at least the first and last chapters, which argue forcefully that current models of computation and memory in the brain are lacking fundamental properties of agile explicit representation and manipulation of symbols.

Now i need to pick another book..

The PgDn feature is definitely a win -- credit goes to those who have been advocating for it.
I did just notice a bug where if you page down to the end of the multi-page results it can sometimes get confused and be reluctant about paging back up; working on fix.
