Automatic Screenshotter / Re: how to use region function

Interesting..
Have you tried the new explicit monitor id capture?  You may have to experiment with monitor #s, starting with 0.

That is *really* weird.. The region select button should put crosshairs on the workspace that span the entire set of monitors.. it shouldn't even be possible for it to only cover one monitor...  I wonder if there is something unusual about the way your multiple monitors are set up.. Can you tell me a little more about your setup?

I have uploaded a new beta version with specific monitor capture # mode, and improved the region select option.

Also fixed a bug where duplicate captures could be saved if the active window/process changed.

New beta at same url as above.

1. When you click the new button to select a region, the cursor changes to cross-hair and you should now be able to click and select a region on the screen; after you do so it will fill in the values of the region you have selected into the options dialog in front of you indicating the region location and size.  It works here.  Anyone else?

2. It refers to the active window at the time of capture.. in other words it tracks whatever monitor your cursor/mouse is currently in.

I could add an option that let you specify a specific monitor # for capture, but I'd like to get the region select to work first; it seems to be working here.

Living Room / NYT Long Essay: An Office Designed for Workers with Autism
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2019, 01:27 PM »
Fun long essay on a company that specifically caters to workers on the autism scale..

What happens when people who have trouble fitting into a traditional workplace get one designed just for them?
A business full of people who are on the autism spectrum provides its own kinds of managerial and interpersonal challenges, but to be the norm in an office, rather than an exception, is an unqualified relief for many of Auticon’s employees. Hirasuna noticed the difference in the first week of work, when he was writing an email to his manager. “I realized after the first day, Oh, yeah, I don’t have to read this over for nuance and all that stuff,” he said.

Can you try the new beta:

Changes:
  • [BugFix] Region capture mode would not accepted negative coordinates, which are needed for some multimonitor setups.
  • [Feature] You can now select the region to capture graphically.
  • [MinorFeature] New menu item to open last screenshot.

Hi snorlax.

Interesting questions.. SC wants to make sure it can write files out to its Screenshot directory, or else switch someplace where it can.. I suppose that I could add an option to let you specify the windows TEMP directory for people who didn't want to actually save screenshots permanently..  It's an interesting idea.

Your second question is sort of related -- in that the fastest way to use SC is not to use the SaveAs prompt at all, and let SC always save to its screenshot directory and never bother you with a pop-up at all.  Your idea is interesting.. Can I point out that you can just hit Alt+A to trigger SaveAs from the pop-up dialog -- still shows the pop-up dialog but it's just one more keypress..

Sorry for not replying to this earlier.. It's a good question.. Perhaps I should add a button that would let you select a region graphically by dragging it on the screen?

« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2019, 11:10 PM »
It's an interesting idea... I should say that Automatic Screenshotter is designed to not waste time capturing screenshots when there is nothing changing, and has an option to not capture when Screensaver is running, so really if your computer goes into screensaver mode when you are away/asleep, it should solve the problem without you having to set strict time schedule.  Isn't that more useful?

I'm not quite following what parts of the feature request are the important ones.. Have you tried my Clipboard Help+Spell?  I don't think it will solve your problem (though it has a stack and a quick popup list of recent clips), but I ask only because if you could explain what features you'd like added it would be easier for me to understand.

Living Room / Re: Micro Reviews of Board Games From a Non-Competetive Perspective
« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2019, 11:21 AM »
It's been a long time since I've posted on this thread.

But I recently played a game that I feel compelled to talk about: Chronicles of Crime.

This is a cooperative deduction board game where you play as detectives trying to solve crime stories.
You don't replay this game over and over, you only play each scenario once (each lasting a few hours), which tells a story as you try to solve the crime.  More downloadable scenarios are coming soon.

The game makes excellent use of a phone/tablet app, where you can scan item cards in order to ask certain characters about certain evidence.  It's a brilliant design and it works.

This will probably be made into a pure computer game soon -- as the actual physical pieces are not essential -- but for those of us who appreciate the tactile element of board gaming in a group, it works.

I'm a huge fan of these deduction mystery games like Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, but where this one really shines is in scratching that open-ended itch that you find in classic computer adventure games, where you can basically ask anyone about anything and really have to sit and think and discuss clues while you try to figure things out.

Highly recommended.

Note: The crime stories are for mature players, not young children.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Prevent windows stealing focus
« Last post by mouser on February 19, 2019, 03:57 AM »
It's a good idea.. I don't think it would be too hard, it would just require a way for the user to easily add exceptions for certain programs that should be allowed to pop-up and steal focus.
So on seeing a new app take focus that wasn't triggered by a mouse click, the utility would put focus back on last window and show an alert and let the user indicate that they want that app to be able to take focus in the future, etc.

Screenshot Captor / Re: How to disable saving notes to PNG "description" EXIF field?
« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2019, 03:51 PM »
If I remember correctly, active win info remembers any last selected region in the image (where you see the "moving ants" selection rectangle).  So SC will try to remember what region you last had selected during editing of each screenshot.
It's the x,y,x2,y2 coordinates.
I believe that's correct.  So if you disable this and switch to a new image and switch back, it won't remember the last selected region.

It's a poor choice of description for that option -- I'll put on my todo list to change it to something like "Do not save last selection area" or something like that.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Hotstrings - To Launch My Dock
« Last post by mouser on February 11, 2019, 01:17 PM »
This would be another great use case for something like AutoHotKey.

You could set it up to detect a string typed, and tell it to generate the hotkey for your launchbar.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: LBC - Loop Send Keys
« Last post by mouser on February 11, 2019, 11:34 AM »
slc is talking about the advanced SendKeys feature of LBC that lets you tell LBC to send some hotkeys to an app.

I don't think there is a way in the SendKeys syntax to do what you want; the best approach if you want to do more complicated sending of keys to target windows or other applications is maybe go grab AutoHotKey and instead of using SendKeys from LBC, have LBC run an ahk script that can do more complicated stuff.

Find And Run Robot / Re: #filecontents FILEPATH -- how does it work?
« Last post by mouser on February 11, 2019, 08:00 AM »
Ok I believe I have it working in a beta.  Message me for download link to beta.
New command "appcapresults" to run a script/executable and capture its output to display as a list of results (should be able to use all the normal options for display nice labels, custom icons, etc.).
New command "fileresults" which should behave just like the unusual "#filecontents" directive, except that it can be used now in the same way that the other commands can be, so it can be chained together with other commands.
Bug fixed where a result had the icon of the item before it if it should otherwise have had no icon.

BTW a small bug with #filecontents:  If a line in the text.txt file isn't an existing filepath, but instead some text string, it will erroneously reuse the icon from the previous results line. For example if text.txt contains
Ok, I've fixed this -- it was a more general problem with using previous icon when one shouldn't be used at all, and was probably the cause of an occasional report that a random icon was being used when there was only one result and it should not have an icon.

Find And Run Robot / Re: #filecontents FILEPATH -- how does it work?
« Last post by mouser on February 10, 2019, 04:16 PM »
I am implementing both "appcapresults" function which will pull results directly from a script, but also Nod5's request for a separate command that says to pull results from a text file, in a way that can be chained together with other virtual launch strings.

Does anyone have a script/executable that I can use to test the new appcapresults function?
So I need an executable that produces results for FARR to display (in normal alias result format, with option icon and nice label, etc.).
Nevermind I made one.

BTW a small bug with #filecontents:  If a line in the text.txt file isn't an existing filepath, but instead some text string, it will erroneously reuse the icon from the previous results line. For example if text.txt contains

let me try to fix that.

Everyone should remember that it's very common for people to claim they are responsible for some action like this when they really had nothing to do with it.  So don't assume the person posting is connected to it in any way, as opposed to just wanting to stir up some controversy/attention.
