N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)

awesome

ps. for those wondering why it would be useful to have it be able to go back to last manual seeked file, see this request for audiobooks: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=22463.0

Not to take away from this at all, but this jumped out at me from the original article:

Earlier this semester, Zurovcik, who had been making plans for field tests of the patent-pending device at a rural clinic in Rwanda this fall, was asked by the nonprofit healthcare organization Partners in Health to take part in earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

hopefully this is the story of a truly groundbreaking invention that will help heal people.. and not the story of how someone leverages publicity to get rich off a patent that is not significantly different from what already exists.

i need to find a cure for my cynicism..  :(

there is nothing wrong with someone making money while helping people.. good for her if she's invented something useful and found a way to do it cheaply -- no reason the big manufacturing companies should make money off her invention instead of her.  but on the other hand i think it's probably useful to distinguish between people who are selflessly exhausting themselves to help others.. and those whose primary motivations *may* be to find a way to patent and then profit from filling a health care need.

Skwire Empire / Re: Trout Music Player Feature Request
« Last post by mouser on April 16, 2010, 02:51 PM »
You're talking the last manually set position using the mouse on the seekbar, eh?

yep, but note it needs to save the song name or index too, not just seek position (i dont care about it being robust to changes in the play list).

Skwire Empire / Trout Music Player Feature Request
« Last post by mouser on April 16, 2010, 02:28 PM »
I have a request for skwire's Trout Music player.

I use trout to listen to audiobooks as I am falling asleep.

One of the most common things i do is want to start playing where i started the night before (that is, i fell asleep almost instantly), and it takes me a few minutes to remember and find where that was.

What would be nice is some way for Trout to remember what song AND OFFSET i last manually seeked to, and be able to go back to that from a menu item.  (i suppose double clicking on a filename should also set that song and 0 offset as well; but auto advancing at end of a song should not, obviously).

Skwire, does this seems feasible and worth doing?

nice to have that mystery solved.. now what was yours set to, and do you remember if you manually changed it?

superboy, try this:

go to options, and select your launch bar, then look at the "Background Display" group, and see if you have something unusual set for the color.
mine is set to "clBtnFace" -- is yours?

ps. sarge, i have a little pet peeve about giant signatures.
yours is nice laid out but i'd love it if it was half the size.  i just think it gets a bit crazy when a thread is fill with them.

but visually arranged so i don't have to use my brain when i'm trying to find a particular file.

wanting a spatial arrangement of icons to launch is a valid reason for using the desktop (or one of those tools like "Fences").

if you are already using a quick toolbar then you aren't going to get much benefit from LBC; in fact these screenshots of LBC are all you need to see to know if it can replace desktop for you: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=18759.0

for me, spatial arrangement is not helpful, i like having things in a shallow hierarchy, organized by category -- that's why i like LBC.

LBC works for me because i have a handful of applications i use all the time -- so these are big icons always on the face of the dock, one click away.  then i have lots of other applications and files that are one level deep.

I think the model works fantastically for what they use it for, for focused question+answers by experts.  But we are much more conversational here, so i'm not sure it would be a good match.. and i don't know how you could combine them.

Nothing has become corrupted, it's probably a change in LBC.

But I need some help identifying when the problem started.
As i understand it you are saying it happens on all your machines with the latest version of LBC.
When you are ready email me and i'll give you some older LBC versions and we can try to pinpoint what version it was where the problem started happening.

i notice you have a lot of icons on your desktop.  i'm in the camp that keeps my desktop completely free of icons.  i use LaunchbarCommander with large fonts and a sliding/hiding dock to keep track of any application i might want to launch, and FARR for others.  so i never have to minimize windows to view the desktop to launch anything..

i have an overhead ceiling light and that's all i use, at all times; the shaded are mostly drawn in this room so i don't get too much direct light from outside.

Site/Forum Features / Re: NANY 2011 :: A New Concept -- Have your say!
« Last post by mouser on April 15, 2010, 01:29 PM »
I should clarify that I have no interest in NANY as a way to "promote" DC.

But i do think that one way DC says thank you to the NANY coders is by getting their hard work and newly created applications some notice that they might not otherwise have.  I think one of the pleasures of coding something is having people discover and use it, and that can be really hard these days.

So one thing that did motivate this discussion was the thought that this was something desirable about NANY, and a worry that it might be losing this aspect if there wasn't some kind of focus on producing applications that could be useful to, and would be worth checking out by non-dc-regulars.

One thing skwire has been saying is "don't worry about it" -- that the applications can stand on their own, and people will be able to see which would be useful to them and which wouldn't, and we don't need to make a special effort to segregate them or manage them differently.  This may be true and i may be trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

I have to confess i was the main person who thought there might be a problem in search of a solution.. Maybe i was overthinking and underestimating the value of keeping things simple..

What if we reversed and said that NANY is whatever you want it to be, and cut down on the rules/guidelines/etc.

But simply said:
  • If you DO want to make a substantial, well documented, feedback tested application for NANY, get started early and let us know so we can help you get it to that state.
  • At the end of NANY, we may try to categorize applications based on how ready we think they are for casual visitors to use, or how "finished" they are.

thoughtful points from someone who has been a serious and reliable NANY participant.. maybe we have been overthinking things and should try a simpler NANY next year instead of this proposed change..
