sounds like a fun project, i'm almost sure someone here will want to code it.

one thing i think might be helpful is if you have any more thoughts about form size requirements and constraints?
in other words, is it ok if the progress bars are both side by side on one main "form" that could be dragged around and resized? or is it important that these are basically 2 progress bars that float around and are not in a standard windows dialog?

Newsletter for May 7th, 2010
"Birds of a Feather Update Together"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Hi all, and welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder.com newsletter.  It's been less than 30 days since the last newsletter, and I'm trying to work my way back to doing them every 2 weeks, instead of the 4 week gaps that have become common.

I've updated half a dozen of my larger programs in the last week, and this newsletter marks their shift from beta to release status.  You'll find links below -- the biggest update is to Screenshot Captor, which now boasts some of the best capturing of Windows 7 and Vista semi-transparent (Aero Glass) windows you can find.

Skrommel, the legendary coding snacks coder finally gave in and has recompiled his huge collection of utilities hosted on DonationCoder, but we are still waiting for the new versions to be uploaded on his page -- I think this may be a case where we all need to nag him on the forum to show him how much we appreciate his work.  If you haven't visited it in a while, stop by his section and take a look, and send him a message telling him to update the files already!

Markham has released a new update to CircleDock, the insanely popular circular launch dock that got it's start on DC (originally coded by Eric Wong).  And DC member and programming legend Ecaradec, has posted about his latest creation, Swiffout, a browser extension that can take an in-browser flash game and let you play it full screen.

Lastly, let me mention here that I'm putting out an open invitation for anyone who wants to come over on May 22nd (Saturday) to my place in Champaign IL, for food and to play board games.  See the thread below for more details.  Social outcasts and shy non-talkers are welcome.

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We encourage everyone's participation on the forum, regardless of your computer knowledge or how long you've been a DC member. If you're still waiting to make your first post, see the links below for some good places to dive in.

3. May 2010 Discounts

Last month we featured a discount on the VTrain vocabulary trainer, and gave some copies of it away as well.  We're pleased to announce that VTrain has agreed to extend the discount through May, for anyone who missed it in April.

4. DC Member Software Updates

This month DC members announced a few new coding snack utilities and software updates.

5. Mouser Software Updates on DC

I released a bunch of updates to my larger software programs on the site, including some major new features (like completely re-written functions for capturing Vista/Win7 Aero transparency effect by Screenshot Captor).

6. DC Member Software Updates and Mini-reviews

We also have an eclectic trio of new mini reviews posted by forum members:

7. Site/Forum Features and Discussion

There are several ongoing discussion threads about DonationCoder.com features, structure, and possible improvements.. I think we are finally reaching some agreement on our top priorities for things we want to do going forward, but we still want to hear more opinions about these things, so don't be shy!

8. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

What's new on the world wide web? What fun new sites have forum members discovered?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Let's find out..

9. Fun, Games and Amusements on the Web

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

10. Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware related problem.

11. Developer's Corner

If you're not a programmer, don't let the title of this section scare you away - there's something here for everyone, even non-programmers! It's more than just a forum about software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active recently.

12. News You Can Use

DC member Stephen6615 has been filling in for Ehtyar in posting weekly summaries of interesting tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  He even forced me to create an archive page where you can browse through past editions.

It's a long shot, but maybe renegade you could contact them on behalf of DC and see if they might be willing to give us a few of the phones we could give away to coders on DC who would participate?

Screenshot Captor / Re: hotkey for capturing active window
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2010, 10:14 AM »
yeah it won't change it for you unless it's a new install; to change it yourself go to options and hotkeys tab, and just change it :)

ComicPress is an excellent set of themes and scripts to aid web comic authors in presenting their web comics using the WordPress blog system.  It's donationware.

ComicPress provides you a WordPress theme with the necessary comic display, navigation and archiving features built in as well as seemlessly presenting your comic and blog posts yet handling them accordingly. It's clean neutral style is designed to be used right out of the box, but with a little CSS knowledge you can style it as custom as you can imagine. There is always much discussion and assistance in the forum for modifications.

My favorite web comic, Head in the Clouds, created by DC members Nudone and Timns, is hosted using a modified version of ComicPress.

just want to report that i've tried it on two flash games so far and it worked wonderfully.  on the second one, the screen was blank the first time i tried it, but i suspect that may have to do with the fact that i use the NoScript extension to block flash most of the time and only enable it manually when i get to a page with flash i want to enable.

also should be said that this worked on multimonitor setup, AND i was able to use my other monitors without it popping out of full screen on the monitor it was on, which is cool, since directx full screen games do not allow this.

and i was able to exit out of the fullscreen game with an escape key without any trouble.

big thumbs up

General Software Discussion / Re: Clipboard Managing-Which one?
« Last post by mouser on May 06, 2010, 05:44 PM »
I'm happy to recommend my own Clipboard Help and Spell, but most clipboard tools do the basic stuff pretty well; i'm finally getting into doing updates for CHS, so if you have feature requests be sure to let me know (on a different thread!).

General Software Discussion / Re: an entire drive suddenly missing!
« Last post by mouser on May 06, 2010, 08:10 AM »
you have reason to be concerned.. sometimes this means that the file tables on the hard drive have been corrupted.  it goes without saying that you should NOT let windows format the drive in any way.

have you tried unplugging it and re-plugging it in?

sounds like nudone is in love.  ;D
16387
question: it says it is a browser extension, but doesnt say what browser it is for?
16388
sounds interesting and i look forward to trying it!
as you say  if you do $1 then paypal will take all of the payment.

its very hard to ever go up in price, so why not start at $9.90 for a while, and see what happens.

Site/Forum Features / Re: Discussion: How can we Improve DonationCoder?
« Last post by mouser on May 06, 2010, 03:03 AM »
i was thinking i would just make this the default behavior whenever you click on main link to a topic, to go to last read post; then it wouldnt matter if you clicked new button or not.

It would be nice if DC had a feature to drop me off at the last post that I read on the particular thread that I read before

we really need to publicize this more, but on the "unread posts" page, if you click the round "new!" image it will do exactly that.

Thought i would take the liberty of posting that I released a bunch of updates to my larger software programs on the site today, including some major new features (like completely re-written functions for capturing Vista/Win7 Aero transparency effect by Screenshot Captor).

The program web pages have links not only to the downloads but also to full online help files and links to the forum discussion sections for each one.  Always happy to have feedback and feature requests!

i wouldnt try to use it as a replacement for normal keyboard for sure -- i think it's useful as an additional set of keys for people who like to have lots of customizable extra keys.

lots of complaints about missing drivers for vista/7.

i looked around and i think there seems to be good working win7 drivers now, coded by a 3rd party. See http://www.ergodex.c...c.php?f=5&t=3181

i'm afraid not. The + and - characters are treated specially right from the start :(

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer and Process Lasso
« Last post by mouser on May 05, 2010, 12:57 AM »
They are very similar tools -- you wouldn't want to run both of them at the same time.  Both are good.  Process Tamer is a little more narrowly focused, and so perhaps a little more lightweight and minimalistic.  Process Lasso is updated more frequently.  Try them both out and stick with the one that suits you best ! :)

Find And Run Robot / Re: How to use pskill with farr
« Last post by mouser on May 05, 2010, 12:27 AM »
if you want it to show in the results list try using the mechanism for showing a custom caption, e.g.

pskill %cliptext% | c:\program files\pskill\pskill.exe %cliptext% $$1

this syntax tells far to show the part before the | in the results list, and in this case i think it should replace contents of the %cliptext%
