I was surprised I hadn't seen anyone raging about this:

No need to hurry!

Actually, I do, because I really like for my bookmarks to be synced between browsers and computers (and haven't been able to since XMarks was shut down).  I've tried a couple of other solutions but none have worked consistently, so I'm holding out hope for ymarks.  =]

The problem now with ymarks is the fact that Chrome is shutting down inline extension installs :(

I doubt it's the programmers.   :-\

As someone who works in digital marketing/advertising, I'm torn between the appeal of anonymity and just having everything out there so I can observe the marketing/remarking. One thing that's really interesting to me is that the comfort that comes from running a browser that claims first class tracker blocking really creates a false reassurance. The good it serves is shutting down some truly bad-agents -- but it hardly slows down the really big agents. First-party data is still being tracked, that data is still being shared with big data brokers, and then being-reshared with other really big agents.

This is why I've stopped worrying and learned to tolerate (if not love) the bomb.

Living Room / Re: Fake reviews are now a firmly entrenched business model

I heard a story on NPR where a lot of people randomly receive merchandise from Amazon they didn't order, because a lot of the fake reviewers make verified purchases and have the products shipped to random addresses.

Depending on the product, I'd like to be one of those random addresses...  :-[ ;D

I just "instinctively" thought PNG was very likely to be better for webpages because from my own (admittedly subjective) experience, I found that most web pages produce both lighter and better quality pictures being saved as PNG, unless the contents of the page includes a significant portion made of pictures (especially if those are already in JPEG), and thus it seemed only natural to question the choice of JPG.

For now we only know that OP encounters some kind of issue when posting PNG pictures to forums working with vBulletin, which seems to be the only reason —although I guess it may be a fair enough one, if the issue is too bothersome and can't be fixed— why he favors JPG.
-ConstanceJill (June 14, 2018, 02:29 AM)

Sometimes I've found that JPG is better still.  The PNGs on some (even not photographs) is very much larger.  I still like PNGs better, but after anecdotal evidence (especially with photographs as you state), I always check the size and go with whichever works best for the situation.
1634
It heavily depends on the type of picture you have.
-ConstanceJill (June 13, 2018, 04:39 PM)

That was my only point.  It does depend.  But in your original post you said "why JPG" as if it had no place

* wraith808 shrugs
1635
I've used Pearl Crescent Page Saver Basic for a while, it allows both PNG and JPEG.

Also, I second the question: why jpg ? PNG offers lossless quality and may even produce lighter files (depending on the contents on the page).
-ConstanceJill (June 12, 2018, 03:35 PM)

png is larger in many cases.  And if you reduce the quality, why go lossless.

Well, Kickstarter may help you. But keep in mind Mouser's advise.

Kickstarter helps artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and other creators find the resources and support they need to make their ideas a reality. To date, tens of thousands of creative projects — big and small — have come to life with the support of the Kickstarter community.

Regards,

Anand

Kickstarter is a bit more than a place to get funds.  He'd have to be able to articulate the product, create the campaign, and most importantly, deliver the product.  If he's asking on here how to get it done, then Kickstarter is a bad choice.

This is probably not the place to get help with such.  You might want to look at patent and inventor type sites.  I know that there are people/companies that help people through the process, but I'm not sure of the requirements nor any recommendations.

The latest by Woody Allen is at 31% on Rotten Tomatoes and that grade is well deserved.  It started out good... but fell down on the ending.  A bit predictable, but good performances from Jim Belushi, Kate Winslet, and surprisingly Justin Timberlake.  But at places, even they can't carry the script.  Not recommended.

That happened many years ago for Alphabet when they spun off to be the parent company.  It also meant very little and was just words- as shown when employees questioned Google about their drone work and quoted it, and had no effect on their policies.

Speaking of weed, I watched Up in Smoke again last week.  It is still funny after all these years.  :)

Why are you watching a current history of the US?

Ok, it may be only a current history but it is the only history we've got.  Or is that war?  I get confused.  :D

War.  Huh. Yeah.  What is it good for!  Absolutely nothing!

Funny story.  I have a laptop from my company that they have for me to take home.  They've become more and more restrictive, to the point that to even use webmail you have to connect to to the vpn.

That might have to do with DNS registration and security (through obscurity). When you connect with VPN to your company's network, your system becomes part of that network and features such as webmail do not require to be completely/correctly/properly configured to become accessible for the computers in your company's network. Which makes for (much) less direct attack vectors that people outside your company's network can use to wreak havoc.

Oh, I understand it.  It's just stupid.  Especially when your VPN software locks just about everyone remote out of the software at some point, reducing productivity to zero.  We even have a public e-mail thread about people sharing methods that they've used to connect when AnyConnect isn't working.

Read(ing) two anthologies.

Exalted: Tales from the Age of Sorrows

Very disappointing.  As an anthology based on an RPG, I didn't expect much.  But it didn't even deliver to that level.

Ki-Khanga: The Anthology

My second time attempting to get through this - the formatting of the e-book and editing are atrocious.  But once I got past that, the stories themselves were pretty good.

Funny story.  I have a laptop from my company that they have for me to take home.  They've become more and more restrictive, to the point that to even use webmail you have to connect to to the vpn.  On my home computer, I set up a virtualbox, used one of my mb lifetime licenses on that box, and connect that way.  On my laptop, they're using Kaspersky.  They updated kaspersky, and I did the reboot, and Kaspersky was completely borked.  I hate Kaspersky already, but that made me hate  it with a passion.  I tried to re-enable windows defender, but whatever they did to disable it appears to be permanent.  Kaspersky said to repair it, but lo and behold they have disabled the repair option with administrative policy.  So I downloaded a trial of malwarebytes, and am back up and running- hopefully support will get back to me within 14 days (it's been 2 days so far of non-productive time :-\).  They seem to care more about security and vpns than productivity, so who am I to argue?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: GS-Base Mini-Review

Yes, I've done it in my uses, and while it's not exactly intuitive, it's pretty easy, and once you get down how to do it, easy to do for further implementations.  My only real problem with it is no interface to use from outside the application.  But that's not really a negative of the application- it just limits the use cases.

Also, many projects and even programming languages (talking to you, Go!) natively integrate GitHub as their package repository. That means that not only the official source would be gone for a while - large parts of the software world wouldn't even compile anymore. That's a bad sign.

But, the largest factor to me- is that Github's fault?  Did they put pressure on as the largest DVCS repository in the space?  If they didn't, that's a bad choice on the part of the community rather than the company.  I use Bitbucket for projects whenever I can- Atlassian has a more transparent profit stream, and a more transparent reason for offering the service.  I try to never use a product that I don't pay for, and if I do, I try to use something backed by someone that I know has a profit stream that I understand.  Github is not very transparent, and I don't even know where a 7.5B valuation (other than for the platform implementation) comes from.  That, IMO, is more problematic than who owns it.
