General Software Discussion / Re: Scott Finnie unimpressed by NOD32 ...
« Last post by Lashiec on November 06, 2007, 11:48 AM »
I missed most of his newsletter over this year, but a quick review of them shows various sections where he states the newsletter is going Mac zealot anytime soon, though he is using a Mac as his main machine. The only casualty is Linux, as the editor of that section (his wife) can't oversee it anymore. Besides, he was promoted to Editor in Chief of Computerworld, shunning Windows would be stupid.

Actually, I appreciate he talks about Mac, as he gave a good list of software for it (this would prove useful for future reference), and if he can treat the system as a mere machine, there should be no problem there.

But he bought an iPhone :o ;D

So no real solution to be used without some cooperation from the other side of the transmission. I wonder how those BitTorrent clients using encryption do to connect with the clients that do not support it, like the same Opera :D. Maybe they ignore those other clients and thus they don't exchange data with them?

Don't worry, Scot Finnie uses more computers and operating systems at a time than Messenger windows a teenager to chat with his/her friends ;D (although I'm guilty of doing the same :P). And I see Scot finally converted the newsletter in a blog.

BTW, I opened another thread about ESET Smart Security </shameless plug>

Companies tend to not include DVI cables to cut costs. They don't even give you DVI-VGA converters, those are provided by graphic cards manufacturers. That reminds me that my DVI cable is purchase pending ;D

Also, another good reason for not going 16:9 is desktop space. Currently, I have the printer at one side, and it would be difficult to fit a wide screen panel, at least with enough space for the speakers to be separated from the screen.

There are some advanced wireless mouses out there. Like this Genius (longest URL ever) that lets you plug the USB cable to recharge the batteries, much like the iPod (Apple developed something really nice there).

I'm very happy with my Logitech LX7, and I would not give up on wireless not even for all money in the world :D. Of course, this one uses AA batteries, so I don't have mouser's problems :P

I prefer 4:3 as well, you get plenty of space, and if you can afford two, the better. Manufacturers are pushing wide screen panels because they're cheaper to make, but, objectively speaking, none of the so called pluses are actually that, like for example, that you get a bigger screen (LOL) or a 16:9 screen feels more natural for reading (of course, go to those sites that expand the layout to fill all the screen, like NeoGAF, to see how nice and natural feels reading something like that).

On the other hand, what João comments, having two files side by side, it's a big plus, and a true one, not mentioned too often.

It's a good question. Traffic between nodes goes encrypted, but I suppose it has to be decrypted to perform another exchange of different keys with the next node in the path, so I guess during that moment you could see the data using appropriate tools.

It's a fact that exit nodes are capable of viewing your traffic, though. And people are also capable of viewing its traffic, just like it happened to this German guy who went to jail because his exit node was being used by a child pornographer. It was suggested that Russian and Chinese governments are operating a group of nodes in the Tor network. Now, if I could find the source...

About the encryption thing, I was asking if it's possible to encrypt any kind of traffic you send to other computers, but of course, those other computers should be able to decrypt your traffic as well, I mean, negotiation of keys is needed. Am I correct?

General Software Discussion / ESET Smart Security
« Last post by Lashiec on November 05, 2007, 01:32 PM »
It's out.

So, will it be the first truly good security suite, or will it fail like any other before? Oh, and NOD32 3.0 was also released as well.

The list of features in the new firewall module:

ESET Smart Security's Personal firewall provides bidirectional, stateful firewall protection with intrusion detection features. The three operational modes are:
  • Normal mode: Provides unobtrusive protection for everyday use without requiring an understanding of firewall technology or complex configuration.
  • Advanced mode: Provides power users with an interface for firewall customization.
  • Policy-based: Allows the administrator to set and deliver a customized policy configuration for the firewall (Only available in the Business Edition).

All modes provide protocol filtering and intrusion detection.

A powerful feature of ESET Smart Security's Personal firewall is the ability to mark specific programs as being network-aware, in addition to web browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Using this feature, it is possible to identify and mark an application which can be used over a network (such as Microsoft Word) for far more rigorous heuristic checking of any network connections used by the application.

And in the spam filter:

The Antispam feature provides a highly reliable defense against annoying spam, as well as protection against email-borne threats that share many traits with normal spam.

Antispam utilizes both client- and server-based rules to provide up-to-the-minute spam prevention not attainable by other solutions requiring a continuous stream of downloads for detection.

The antivirus continues to be the same as before, but with "Enhanced proactive scanning technology" and "Improved ‘in memory’ cleaning of threats". Ya know, the usual tweaks to the engine, as 2.7 was the one who brought a real breakthrough in the scanning engine, with the addition of ThreatSense heuristics algorithms.

Guys, one remark: gOS does not have anything to do with Google, other than bundling direct links to their services, something it can't be discussed as Google have more major online services than anybody.

And there is a customized Google OS, based on Ubuntu, and used internally at Google, but I doubt it would go farther than having it branded.

But the true OS I talked before was presented today.

Yes, it's possible, but not very probable.

I would be very wary of using Tor if you are sending sensitive data, anyway, some exit nodes are operated by questionable organizations or countries... I suppose maybe you could encrypt your traffic before it's sent, but I don't know if such thing would be feasible.

(Oh man, another link to Ars Technica, it's like I work there ;D)

Darwin, the problem with that lies within the inability of programmers to correctly implement ID3v2 tags. It's not only their fault, but also a problem of the specification, being a hack in the beginning and all, with various versions of it, with only 2.4 being the right designed one. It seems to be a trend within big programs though, small software have support for the various revisions, and provide options to choose another revision of your fancy, but warning about their shortcomings.

For example, foobar2000, Mp3tag and XMPlay all recognize and play nice with my files. Winamp also fixed its way in recent times. You can't say the same of iTunes and WMP11, though, those both use ID3v2.3, and people has laughed (or cursed) the implementation.

A Google OS... that's the new tech meme that the so called 'tech journalists' had been feasting on for all these months. It's clear that they don't know much about technology, just like the whole Web 2.0 craze and its dream of thin clients and FAT servers...

But you know, there's something called 'OS' in Google. Here it is

Darwin, soon we'll need this

This is STUPID. By the same definition of rape, a woman can't commit such act. And oral sex can't exactly be considered as rape. Besides, rape consideration within laws change from country to country. Oh well, it poses a lot of questions about a lot of things

Unfortunately, the problem lies within home DVD players, which sometimes don't follow the guidelines in full. Even Nero with quality discs and burners has compatibility problems.
