Developer's Corner / Re: reasonable charge for one-off web 1.0 site creation?

Do what wraith says -- quote them an hourly rate you can live with if scan turns out to be right and you have to do more work than you expect.

They may not love the idea that it's an hourly rate but that's the only way to avoid the nightmare scenario that scancode has laid out and it will save you from having to worry about them asking for additional stuff, etc.

I've written about Freeware World Team before.

They just underwent a name change to "Primewares" -- probably because it's shorter and easier to type.  They still focus on discovering and listing freeware, with an international focus.

Few sites are as dedicated to discovering new small freeware releases as this site.. They may not have the fanciest write-ups or the best looking layout, but the people involved are devoted to finding and listing new free software every day.  Few sites if any are as consistently good at it as they are, year after year, and they remain a daily read for me.

one way in which forums could hinder development is by causing the kinds of problems that people talk about in project management disasters, when you have too many people involved in going back and forth with contradictory design requirements, or group-think problems where people get caught up in bad ideas.  but those are things that i think have more to do with a failure of the person at the top of the project (the coder in our case) to adequately manage the ideas being discussed.

something in my gut tells me there might be some truth to the general idea that forums can have, in addition to their incredibly positive effect on software development, a downside.

but that just may be my bias to assume everything Jibz says is correct :)

because i'm not sure your example works for me.  when i see other users help someone out with a problem with one of my programs, i just get a big feeling of gratitude that someone was helped and someone took the time to help them.  and it means i can focus on those problems that perhaps others can't solve.  it also let's me get a better perspective from the outside looking in, for what problems people have and what kind of workarounds people are using, and how well they are understood.

General Software Discussion / Re: Monitor the size of files
« Last post by mouser on June 24, 2010, 04:39 AM »
The refresh button on the toolbar reads through the list and updates the file sizes.
an option to auto-refresh every couple of minutes would be nice (real-time instant reporting would be even better but might be overkill).

Looks coool..
what might be really sweet is if it could highlight and report recent changes in file size, but then again im not sure i have use for this so i'm just thinking out loud.
16083
I can see how that would be useful.. I can also see that some people wouldn't want it to behave like that, so it would have to be an option.

But let me ask about an alternative.. what if past matching *search* history was shown in the result list as you type? would that solve what you are interested in?

Swiffout isn't just for games.. it works wonderfully for flash display sites like weather radar.  I used it on a site hamradio showed me which has excellent weather radar maps: http://www.intellicast.com

would it be possible for you to send me your lbc file that is having the problem, or upload it for me somewhere? ([email protected])  i'd love to have a LBC file that reliably errors when you close the configuration dialog, so that i could fix the bug.

if it's taking an extended amount of time to save the file, it's probably the case that you could benefit from running the Cleanup and Remove maintenance operations on it.  i should probably start performing those operations automatically when saving a file now that they seem to have proven to be stable.

it's reallllly unlikely this has to do with an infection, so don't panic.

it sounds to my novice ears like your problem is with the nameservers you are connecting to.

if you find that you can ping websites by their ip address but not by their domain name.. then that would pretty much confirm it.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR prevents DiRT 2 from starting
« Last post by mouser on June 22, 2010, 09:06 AM »
wow that is strange.. i have never heard of such a thing before.. i'm trying to think how it could even happen...
did you install any extra farr plugins?
does Dirt2 give an error message?

the only thing i can think of is that FARR might reserve a hotkey that the Dirt2 program doesnt want to be reserved.. you could try going to the FARR options Hotkeys tab and unchecking all the hotkeys and then running it, to see if that makes a difference.

that is straaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaange.

does Dirt2 refuse to start even if farr is minimized to tray?

Find And Run Robot / What hotkey(s) do *you* use to trigger FARR?
« Last post by mouser on June 21, 2010, 07:10 PM »
i really like the default pause/break hotkey for my desktop.
but i also have a netbook that doesn't have such a key, in which case i personally have used alt+backspace, and the ` character to trigger.

i wondered what other people use -- i know alt+space is common...

what do you use? do you have any custom FARR hotkeys set up to perform things like dictionary searches, etc.?

i do think that probably one of the safest ways you can use a public computer is to remote connect to your home/work deskop and work from there, and plan on changing the password when you return home.  that minimizes the risk pretty much.. and means that only if someone sniffs the password you used to log in to your remote computer and uses it to connect to your remote computer are you at risk, which is pretty low risk, especially if you're away for a short time.

now, this immediately suggests that an extremely useful feature for a vpn/remoteconnect tool would be the use of one-time pads, single-use passwords, hardware key ids.  anyone know of any vpn/remote desktop that supports this?

with such a setup, you would remote connect to your desktop, do everything through your encrypted connection to your home/work pc.  you would assume that the local pc is compromised and keylogging everything you type.  but the password they sniff would no longer get them in.  only by keeping a list of single-use-logins with you in your pocket will you be able to log in.

question:
if you BROWSE to the directory in question instead of copy and paste -- does it work in that case?

do you guys have an entry in the network adapter list that matches your adapter?
turn off auto detection -- it's not needed.
the important thing is if your network adapter is shown.
