General Software Discussion / Re: roboform2go or sticky password?
« Last post by Lashiec on November 15, 2007, 01:01 PM »
Taking tinjaw's suggestion as the starting point, you could dump the exported data in fSekrit or in KeePass. Or do something like jgpaiva (I think) does with Opera: storing the passwords in KeePass and in Opera the same time. The same thing is possible with Firefox or you preferred portable browser, so you'd have the data at hand and safe from prying eyes watching over your shoulder.

I'm afraid there are quite some people in the forums seeing signs 1 and 7 right now ;D. Hey, don't give me that look, I don't have gigabytes of fine art...

... probably only 10 MB :P

There is some really cool stuff there I never saw before, thanks for the heads-up Ralf. It's nice to see you can use professional-looking fonts without spending a cent.

Yeah, I reported "live" one of those yesterday, but apparently the moderator was sleeping :P

Next time I'll press the button, rest assured ;)

Essentially, what Asus did recently with that expensive motherboard and the bundled SplashTop Linux environment.

I don't get the relationship with SideShow

Now that the first episode of the second season of Sam & Max is out, Telltale Games has decided to give away for free the fourth episode of the first season, Abe Lincoln Must Die! (caution, the article contains the full plot of the episode!), complete with the usual insanity of the duo. So if you're a fan of graphic adventures, give it a spin.

Deozaan's question reminded me of this blog post by a Microsoft employee (the manager of the team behind the Ribbon in Office 2007)

Oh, I wanted to read the comic :(, even if I know the story behind QWERTY's rise to power ;D, a teacher told us about it a few weeks ago.

I would like to know how they accomplished this. Is dynamically generated or does Fedora brings along a set of predefined wallpapers with the different shadings?

And PulseAudio sounds good ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Maybe Vista doesn't suck?
« Last post by Lashiec on November 09, 2007, 08:35 AM »
Well, Bungie is no longer a direct part of Microsoft so... But don't worry, with Mark Russinovich on the company and the guy behind Office 2007 in charge of Windows 7 management, I think it could be really great. Everything is hinting as a complete breakup with past Windows' foundation, like Mac OS X did before, so that means they can focus on the OS, and not on backwards compatibility.

I'll answer Josh, but I think he already knows this. DRM only causes problems to early adopters who bought these "fantastic" new HD formats that are crippled with DRM. Not that is much of a problem today, as SlySoft cracked yesterday the last scheme behind Blu Ray. That is the only DRM present in Vista, necessary for HD video playback from those discs. Well, apart from WGA, and you know which kind of problems this caused, although it's true it did not cause a general problem for all users (apart from building up a hardware database with unique IDs identifying you). I think Zaine detailed his personal problems with Vista on his blog, so you know where to look ;)

The first thing you'll see there is not exactly DRMed though, but it's truly NSFW ;D

I see two ways to do it: Using programs like DriverCleaner or Driver Sweeper, but I don't know if those would provide a complete cleanup of all drivers as Driver Sweeper, for example, only cleans a few selected packages from various hardware companies.

The other way is following this kind of guide that Jon Stokes posted not too long ago on the Kit blog in Ars Technica, based on a thread in the Open Forum of the same site that is linked at the beginning.

What's this 'popularity' thing? Is it for real? I thought it only existed in movies and in those MTV shows showing the 'real life' of the first weird guy they found down the street :P

Living Room / Re: Computing. A Goal in itself, or a means to an end?
« Last post by Lashiec on November 08, 2007, 01:36 PM »
I vividly remember thinking how cool it would be if all my files and data were available all the time, without having to shuffle through a stack of floppies.

Hey, it could be worse. You could spend hours shuffling through a stack of tapes, and some hours more waiting for them to load ;D

I remember wishing there was a way to type stuff on my computer and have somebody else miles away see it.  Multiplayer games were simply too impossible to imagine.

Well... (first three paragraphs).

As for Beth question, it's a bit of both, like cranioscopical. As I have to use the computer for my studies, it's clearly a mean to an end, but for years I've been using it as the end, and I think it would never cease to amaze me. Not only hardware, which I really like to dig into, but also software, and how people can still develop powerful yet simple programs that makes everything you want without a hitch, even those I've been using for years (foobar2000 or Opera). If I can, I give a try to software that I see recommended here, the case of a impressive program like Surfulater (really blew me away), or those that look appealing to me, either by its looks or features, or even by its name! ;D

And then you have the immense ocean that the Internet is which, as Ralf says, change the perception and the way you do many ordinary things.

« Last post by Lashiec on November 08, 2007, 09:38 AM »
nontroppo, so using Quicksilver in a Mac you can control iTunes without having it open? What are you controlling then? The backend which is powered by a running service or what?

On the foobar part, you can bug Ehtyar to expand the scope of his FARR plugin... or does it control the entire program now? I can't remember... :-[

BTW, Quicksilver is now OSS (Hint, hint ;D)

General Software Discussion / Re: Which MP3 tagger do you use?
« Last post by Lashiec on November 06, 2007, 12:51 PM »
Yes, Mp3tag understands any tag you create and embed in the file. You have to go to the "Extended tags" panel by clicking in any file(s) you wish to edit, and there you can define the tags. As you can define a renaming mechanism as well, it's easy to set up a renaming scheme that chooses either "Album Artist" or "Artist" (a conditional sentence).

By the way, Zune is no different than the new iPods.

The funny thing about DRM is the guys who got the most out of it are the ones which now are trying to get rid of DRM. And well, Amazon, which is doing even more for this than Apple. Unless we rid of the ultimate DRM and sandbox combination iPod + iTunes (for that I suppose we should brainwash people again :P), this is not going anywhere.

So, everybody, go out to buy Sansa and Creative players, dammit! ;D

I hit that little button that reads "Mark all messages as read" once I finished checking up the threads that are of my interest. Once upon a time I had tons of pages containing unread threads, but one good day I hit the global button and... magic! Now everything is brand new ;D

At least you guys name your threads with meaningful names, that makes the reviewing task far easier. Now, let's keep up with the high speed posting to annoy tinjaw even more :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Does reliable PC security have to cost money?
« Last post by Lashiec on November 06, 2007, 12:15 PM »
I'm one of those guys, having security programs by the bucketful, only that... I can't afford a license for any of those! So I run the free versions.

AVG is an excellent choice, but be prepared to possible false positives on the antivirus part. Yes, and that's including files detected as harmful by the antivirus but not by the antispyware. It seems that Ewido and AVG are still not a single entity in that regard (obviously, the support team for the antispyware is still identified as Ewido :D). In case of doubt, upload the file to Jotti or VirusTotal, or use the online scanners of Eset and Kaspersky to be sure (but not absolutely sure, that's unattainable)

Also, it's a good idea to have "forensic" tools to detect strange movements in your computer. Things like HijackThis, Sysinternals tools and NirSoft collection of utilities are very helpful, at least to understand what's going on.

General Software Discussion / Re: ESET Smart Security
« Last post by Lashiec on November 06, 2007, 11:52 AM »
First thoughts of Scot Finnie:

But I've made a decision in the opposite direction about Eset Smart Security suite. Take a pass on this one. The firewall seems very pedestrian; it's able to handle only three of the leaktests on my list of 17. And what's with the antispam module? That doesn't belong in a package like this. The best thing about Eset Smart Security is Nod32 3.0 and the fact that you can turn the other two modules off.

I suppose that means the firewall is secure enough. I don't like that he now focuses in leak testing before usability. Oh well, I think Ken knows better about this, after all his past fights with Comodo ;)
