Sadly, this has been my experience as well. The setup is very confusing and indexing takes forever. Once indexing has completed, nothing I search for is found! Like dormouse, I wound up deleting the Stopka folders.

I can't stress this enough: the initial setup routine MUST be made more clear. For example: on trying to setup a new index it is not clear from the dialogues whether one is being asked to define the location of the index that will be created or folders to be indexed! After trial and error I realised that it is the latter...

PS what OS are you running? If you're running XP, MMM from Hace productions is quite useful for this kind of thing.

Well... with WinRar you DO have the option of having its context menu entries placed into a sub-folder. Open winRar, go to Options -> Settings -> Integration and then in the lower right you'll see "Shell Integration". The middle of the options is "Cascaded context menus".

I’ve got a Win2k disk I can copy and send to you - you should be able to get the key off your harddrive by hooking it up to your Vista box and lookiing for it. Interested? Let me know...  :)

Hi vitali - I've downloaded it but haven't had a chance to set it up and test it. Will do so in the next day or three (Christmas day will probably be a wash...).

Win2k is pretty easy to find as well... there are still copies available on eBay and from on-line retailers (often sold as OEM, which means you'll get an ancient modem or something with your purchase  ;D), for example. I guess the big question is: do you have a standalone licence for either of them? If so, all you need is the media from someone. If not, I'm not sure what the implications are (other than the obvious, which I will not dwell on  :o).

Ah, being Anglo-centric  :-[, I hadn't thought of the Danish language requirement!

What I really would like to know is what a program like Archivarius, X1, etc. offers that Copernic does not.  Since Copernic is free and these others are not, there must be something compelling that makes them worth the money, but I haven't been able to figure that out from the discussion here.

Well, this really goes back to my earlier point about the best search engine is the one that works best for you. Ultimately, this is a personal decision. I have used Copernic and like it. However, there are alternatives, such as X1, that I find more intuitive and that have features that I value. If I provided you with a list of those GUI elements and features it would make perfect sense to me, but likely little to you. I'd say that if you are happy with your current setup - Copernic and Mailbag Assistant - stick with it!

Just to note, though, I love X1 because of its ability to preview so many filetypes AND index my Outlook psts. Archivarius is great because it is so quick and light on resources but isn't as powerful WRT either file previewing or pst indexing. At the moment, I use X1 exclusively (though Archivarius and dtSearch are still installed and I update their indices periodically). dtSearch is right in between the two, but ruled out for just about everything because of its shocking price (I wrote to the sales department asking about an academic version/academic licencing and was made a very generous offer, otherwise I wouldn't be running it)! The greatest thing about it is how easy it is to search networked drives and folders - even without it being installed on the target computer. My wife often has trouble finding things on her computer and I have successfully found them for her using dtSearch - it's SLICK. X1 has similar funcitonality but dtSearch does it so easily that I haven't even tried it.

I don't know if this clarification is necessary or not, but here goes:

Locate32, Everything, and SearchGT allow you to search for files by NAME and or extension (filetype). They're all fast, SearchGT impressively so, given that it doesn't index your filenames. Archivarius, X1, etc. index not only filenames but the CONTENTS of those files as well. So, if I run a search on "Neanderthal" with Locate32, I'll get a listing of every file and folder that contains "Neanderthal" in its name. If I run the same search with X1, I'll get a listing of everything on my computer in which the word "Neanderthal" appears...

Don't know if that's clear or not...   :o But I know what I meant to say  :P See signature  :-[

cyberdiva - Jim and edbro have already answered your question, but it raises a point/observation:

This thread can be distilled down into the following statement: "The best Desktop Search software is the software that works best for you"  ;D

Seriously!

EDIT: I really need to learn how to spell  :-[

Thanks for the tip, Deozaan  That's the sole function I use and I sorely miss it form Maxthon. I've been using one that I created to mimic the Maxthon one - and this is where I have found All-In-One clunky - but it often doesn't open anything at all or opens the link I want and any others I happen to graze with the cursor. I'll give the one you pointed out a try  :)

I'm sort of happy that this happened. I've been using, and loving Maxthon for years (started using it when it was in beta years ago, version 0.7x) and have tried many times to switch to Firefox. This latest issue has forced me to use it, get to know it, and to bend it to my will. I love it! Only thing I miss are Maxthon's mouse gestures. The add-ins for Firefox are clunky.

I've never used Maxthon, so I'm not sure what its mouse gestures are like, but I absolutely love Marc Boullet's All-in-One Gestures for Firefox.

Yup - it's the best of the bunch, and the one that I use myself. Maxthon's are configured differently and seem to work more naturally to me, in that they don't get in the way of any other mouse activity, that I can see...

BRU is infamous for its GUI, which is considered cluttered...

On the contrary, Darwin, I love the fact that every option is in front of me, instead having to tab through endless menus, tabs, and dropdown lists. Same goes for Flexible Renamer, which recently got a version upgrade. I just set how I want for repetitive job, save it as a profile, then BAM! I'm done.

Ah! You misunderstand, Zaine-san! I LOVE BRU's GUI  :-* But its GUI does have its detractors (I'm not one of them, though).

Hi Jim,

X1 6.5 is "OK" - but admittedly it's not as svelte as 6.23 was on my system  :( I notice, even on my Dual Core laptop with lots of RAM that it's "heavier" in its latest incarnation. Not enough to make it annoying or even noticeable unless I go looking for it... but "heavier" nonetheless. Functionally, it's the same as always and I haven't seen any problems, yet.

Hope this helps,

Mike

- I would certainly expect the "1 GB/Hour" to be 1 GB indexed documents, not hard disk space!

Indeed - but I meant that the various indexers report, when they are finished, that they have indexced 60GB of documents - this is on a 200 GB partition that contains 93GB of data  8)

Yes - I do as well, if anybody is looking for it.

I wrote to the developer immediately after making the post above no word, yet, but I'll report back when I do hear form him or her. What has me a bit puzzled is that the purchases were made in 2006... so well before Feb 2008.

Just an update - never did receive a response so have long since stopped worrying about it. Not very impressed, though...  >:(

Well... After almost a month, I'm back to this. As I write this, the Acronis Live CD is copying my Windows Server 2008 partition to an external USB drive. Then I have to decide if I want to write that back to my main harddrive (overwriting my - backed up - 32-bit Vista Home Premium installation)...

If you read the thread on the BRU forum carefully, the ads are to be removed with the next release. How much faith one should put in this promise, I don't know... I still have the previous - ad free - version installed and it works fine.

FWIW, the chief objection to the ad seems to be that it takes up valuable screen real estate. BRU is infamous for its GUI, which is considered cluttered, adding an ad that apparently takes up 30% of the GUI would be significant indeed!

Anyway, it seems that they are "on it". We'll have to wait and see...

I haven't actually installed Windows Server 2003/2008 yet (though I have downloaded it and got a key). Are you saying both 32 bit and 64 bit versions are on the same image because DreamSpark doesn't doesn't mention the installation type.

The download at dreamspark for Windows Server 2008 is for the 32-bit version. However, the key is good for either 32-bit or 64-bit so, if you want the 64-bit version you need to download the trial ISO from MS, burn it to DVD, install it and then you can activate it with the key. However, AFAIK, you can only activate one OR the other version with the key, not both.

We students are poor fellas that still have to work with Windows 98. A little help is always welcomed

If your university has an arrangement with MS through www.dreamspark.com, you can get 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 and 2008... FREE!
