A 2-5 ton portable hydraulic jack is nice to have.
I don't see too many flat tires any more though.
It takes a bit of room in the trunk (boot) but worth it if you need it.
Mine is in a handy case that weighs about 25lbs or so...had it a long time, don't remember the specs.
The factory jacks that come with most cars are an annoyance to use.
I've used it once for my truck and once for my son's car.
They can be found easy enough, parts stores, walmart, etc.

Don't most cars come with a wind up jack thing in the boot anyway?  I know every car we have had for the past 20 years has had them in the spare wheel compartment, or in the boot (trunk).

Since radar detectors are illegal in some places, why not a radar jammer? :P

There are legal "loopholes" here.  One of the ways I suggest people could get around this, is to use map info (Most maps plot where all speed cameras are) and input this into sat-navs.  It's by no means perfect, but...I don't see how that could be illegal.  And yes, that doesn't help with random cop patrols.

Some gadgets that are great for modern car ownership:

Gadgets:

• Dash mounted Tablet
Voice Control is a must here.  Most tablets will allow you to enter "Car Mode" which does just this.  There are several apps on the market that will help here also, but I have no real recommendations there.

• In Car WiFi
Now, you can splurge on a 3G/4G router, but the price of them is so high, you may as well just buy a phone that can act as a hotspot and use that instead.

• Dash Cams
I would suggest one on the front, and one behind.  This means you are totally covered if you ever need to make an insurance claim, or you need to report something you have seen.  They also come in bloody handy if, like they do in Russia, you see something funny, and want to upload it to Youtube :P

• Speed Camera Detector
    If you're heavy footed...these are helpful ;)

• GPS
Fed up of getting lost?  Buy a GPS...Most modern phones have these as default (Androids, iPhones etc)

• DVD/Media Players
These are for passengers, obviously.  If you can, I would suggest going to a scrap yard, find some headrests for the front seats, then cut holes in them for the screens so they are flush.  This way, you can put headrest covers over them so nobody can see they are there.  Ya know...security and all that.

Doodads:

• Emergency Supplies
Always handy to have blankets, first aid kits, tool box and such, in the boot of your car.  Also some long lasting food items (Canned food, along with can opener).  You never know when you are going to break down in the middle of nowhere, and may have to wait hours...or if you are in America, Canada, Russia, Australia, or any country where you can drive for 4 days and not see a single sign of life...

• Fuel Jerry Can
I do NOT recommend that you travel with one of these, with fuel in them.  It is never a good idea.  but having one in the boot is always handy.

• Bluetooth Car Diagnostics
Fuel efficiency, check engine trouble codes, real time gauges, horsepower and torque, and more can be checked via this...very handy to have.  Also means, if your check engine light pops up, you will know what has gone wrong, and either resolve it yourself, or be able to advise the garage what it is (Possibly saving time and money).  You can pick these up for around £50-60 so they are well worth their money.

• Tyre PSI Checker
You can pick these up for like £5, and they show you, on a digital readout, what PSI your tyres are at.  I got one of these free at Chester Zoo, because the AA where there with a car sim, and if you could prove you can drive "ecologically" using their sim, they gave you one.  I managed to convince the lady to give me 4 of them and gave the other 3 away to family :P

• Portable Jump Start Kit
Rather than having Jump leads, why not have the full kit, which will jump start your car if your battery dies!

• Rear Parking Sensors
Now, I don't mean the type that sense if you are too close to something behind you.  What I mean here, is a little doodad, that sticks to your reverse light, senses when it is on, and politely beeps to tell people you are going backwards.  I don't have one of these myself, because, I go on the basis "If you can't fcuking SEE I am going backwards, why the hell are you walking in the middle of the road"...Although, that being said, I think I might get one, because I just remembered some people are ACTUALLY blind.

Anybody fancy adding to this list?  :D

Ca'n't help but wonder...is it really so much that WebKit rules...or more that Opera succumbs? ;D

Webkit and Opera are in a BDSM relationship?!  :o

Only if you're the sort who thinks 'succumbing' is the same thing as 'submitting.' :P

Or you add a k and remove the b.

I will leave you to work that out for yourselves...

SpeedDial is Opera's new tab page.

Um...what?

This is by no means new...not by a LONG way...On my phone, I have had Opera for...well...LOOOOONG before this announcement, and it has always had this feature.

The final feature, and perhaps the most significant, is dubbed Off-Road Mode. This is, essentially, Opera Mini mode; it routes requests through Opera's own servers to compress and reprocess webpages and hence reduce the amount of data you have to download.

So.....Opera Turbo?...

Seriously...what the absolute fuck is going on recently, and how in the name of all that is holy, do these "Editors" get fucking jobs?!

ARGH

I refuse to read the news any more...Shit is driving me mental.
1582
That link, was unreadable for me.

Seriously...For what is supposed to be a professional news post, the lack of basic grammar makes me wonder how these people get jobs.

Asides from grammar, there are parts that literally make no sense...

that uses low-level code to stay hidden and Twitter and Google

Now...I assume this means "Tweets and G+'s...However...the fact he specifically says Twitter and Google in this context, makes me think differently, which makes it bloody hard to read.

MiniDuke, as researchers from Kaspersky Lab and Hungary-based CrySyS Lab have dubbed the threat,

Shouldn't that be... "MiniDuke; as researchers..."?

*sighs*

I might just be getting older, but things like this have started to piss me off more than they should.

Asides from the colour, and the steering wheel being on the other side, this is the new baby in the family.
Will get some photos when it gets light.

That's a pretty damned sexy car.  I really like the contours.  Bet it runs like a raped ape too....

That is does!  The "Sport" function makes the engine rev like a mofo, only issue I see so far, is it if fcuking THIRSTY (It eats petrol like a sonuvabitch), had it 3 days, done...maybe 100miles, spent £50 on fuel lol - Although, a lot of that has been stop/start driving helping my mum move house.  Not had a chance to really drive economically yet, but I am told it will do around 40mpg (atm the car is telling me I am doing 14.2 on average) - Fuel here is £1.42/Liter (UK) - So, shit gets real expensive real quick.

Oh, Found out today it came with factory fitted alarm...I put the dog in the boot, and locked the car to go get something from the house, next thing I know, alarm went off, scared the hell out of the poor dog, AND confused me cause I actually didn't know how the hell to turn it off lol.

Because interest rates are at a record low, we bought a 2013 Ford Taurus in November. It's the most enjoyable car to drive I've ever owned, though I've mainly had sports cars for the past 20 years.
 (see attachment in previous post)
As others note, the problem with car ownership is the cost -- of taxes, licensing, INSURANCE! (ripoff!), high cost of gas, tires, and yes, maintenance. Unless you have cash to burn, get the most reliable car you can afford, viz., a Honda, Toyota, or something else that's nice and boring. You'll thank yourself every month once it's paid off. Just make sure to take it in once a year and have it diagnosed and serviced.

That car is freaking sexy.  That must be at least a 2.4iter engine under the hood there?

One of my first cars was a '63 Dodge Dart.
Ugliest car this side of hell! But it ran good and the heater worked.
In no particular order before I got married and had to straighten up.
'71 Ford LTD, '61 Ford Truck,
'67 Dodge Monaco-a giant of a boat
bought for $175, put a carb on it and ran fine
'69 Chevy Truck, '71 Ford Torino, '85 Ford Ranger
Here's a pick off that dart, mine did not look this good.
It was rusted so bad that if you went through a puddle,
water would come through the floor boards.

That car you have pictured, looks like one that people would pimp and low-ride and put wheels that are way too damn big for the car, with spinner rims and such :D

I totally agree, and contacted llc_silly in that regard.  That was what he had meant, and had set that as a rule on his giveaway.

wraith can I suggest you point this out in the post (or am I missing something?) - one of the posters seems pretty sure they won it :-\ - or maybe better let them sort it out between themselves...
FWIW he did say 'members', which isnt 100% clear ('participants' used be called 'members' - but I presume he meant supporting members)

It has been mentioned in the post, and said post has subsequently been locked until further notice (Wraith is on the ball there).

I've won several things through the old giveaways (thanks to mousers happiness calculator). I would fully support this idea as, like you said, only supporting members would be eligible and less likely to up and leave the site because they were only after a free product.

This suggestion is open, not to put a limit on who, or what, but to get an idea of what the community wants.  I personally don't think that these should be open to people, who have obviously signed up purely for this reason, and will leave once they win or lose.

I don't disagree, that some will stay, but those people will be 1/100, and those numbers, hardly seem worth it.

We could limit to:

  • Supporting Members
  • Charter Members
  • 25+ Posts
  • Contributing Developers
  • Contributing Beta Testers
  • + More

The only real suggestion I have, is a total lockdown on people, whose FIRST post, is in a giveaway thread, and/or you can see their signup date corresponds to such.

Guys,

This is a giveaway, you are not paying for the item llc_silly offered.

Comments like
Do you have that game or not ?
and
Why wont you send it?
are not really very nice.

Please be polite, and not be so rude to the nice person giving away an item.

Remember, these offers could just as easily be limited (as an official rule) to only certain member groups, or people who have actually contributed something to DonationCoder (Other than joining for nothing other than a giveaway).

llc_silly may not be fully monitoring this thread for ANY reason.

llc_silly, if you could possibly inform us on here, as and when you have delivered this gift, or, if you chose not to (for any reason), then please let a moderator know, so we can deal with this thread for you :)

Cheers guy.

Just a suggestion, but to avoid a noticeable influx of members, joining ONLY for these giveaways, can we limit them to ONLY supporting members?  Or possibly members who have X amount of posts, or have been here for X months/years.

I don't like the idea of people finding us through google, through a "Free stuff" search, then leaving if and when they get something.

Again, just a suggestion, and not a specific rule.

Thanks

-Stephen :)

This was taken last June.  This car FINALLY goes away on Monday, when we get a Ford Focus (2013 model).

Honestly...the car has been nothing but trouble since the day it left the showroom.  As you can see in the picture...it was broken then...(Spare wheel).

Never buy Vauxhall...NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The blur isn't the camera...it's the evil trying to break free from the car.
