UrlSnooper / Re: Sniff
« Last post by mouser on September 20, 2010, 03:42 PM »
It sounds like you figured out the basics -- and that fact that it is counting packet received means that it is working.
It's important to distinguish cases where its working but not finding anything useful on the pages you surf and the cases where something is going wrong.

Try setting the top left combo box to "Show All".
Then make sure it is Sniffing (press "Sniff Networkd" button if in advanced mode).
Then open your normal web browser and surf around, start any music playing.
If you are on a page that was open before you started URL Snooper, hold Ctrl and press the Reload button on the browser to force it to redownload the page.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Response to Question: Can shareware be released in the NANY event?
« Last post by mouser on September 20, 2010, 12:47 PM »
DC is very friendly to shareware authors -- we believe authors have a right to make money from their software.

But the ground rules we've always set for NANY is that programs released as part of the NANY event should be free, or free for personal use -- and of course asking for donations is more than fine.

This means that shareware applications are not appropriate as NANY entries (ditto for important-feature-limited lite versions of shareware whose intent is to be a kind of trial version).

It doesn't mean you aren't welcome to tell the forum about your product and be proud of it -- we're always happy to hear about software projects (freeware or commercial) from people who are part of the site.  BUT it does mean that such programs are not suitable for releasing under the NANY event.

At least that's my view.. if the community feels we should change that we could.  This year we have decided to not worry so much about whether entries are giant or small and have decided we will just try to categorize them clearly when the final list is presented.  So if the community wanted, we could allow new shareware applications as part of NANY and simply make very clear which applications fall into that category.  Another possibility would be if the authors of the new shareware program was willing to give all current DC members a free license..

What do you guys think?

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / NANY 2011 Help Request Idea
« Last post by mouser on September 20, 2010, 10:18 AM »
I wonder if someone (probably someone who has used it before)  would consider making a gentle and patient walkthrough with images or videos, taking someone through all of the steps in giving their program update support using my DcUpdater / DcuHelper tools?

See https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9607.0

If no one else is up for it, I will try to find time to do it.  I think it could be useful for NANY entrants who want to add update checking/downloading support to their NANY entries.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Teaser: TaskDaddy Pre Release
« Last post by mouser on September 20, 2010, 09:19 AM »
a farr alias for TaskDaddy would be nice. smiley

Mouser, could you elaborate on this a bit more? It seems to me that after the first time you launch TaskDaddy using, say, td, then the next time I punch in td, it is going to go to TaskDaddy anyway, so why the need for an alias?

i was suggesting a regular expression alias to let you specify a TaskDaddy line from within FARR using the commandline version of TaskDaddy.

Why don't i just make an alias and post it -- actually it gives me an opportunity to add a feature to FARR that i've been meaning to add.

awesome. quick comment, you say:

Mouser has generously provided hosting and a subdomain

in times like these it's important to remember that the hosting is really provided for and paid for not by me, but by everyone who has donated and continues to donate to support the site.  it's because of the generosity of the DC community that we have hosting for the main site and the member server where we can host these kinds of things.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Pledge: UQ Web Service
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2010, 10:24 PM »
Ultimately the idea is for UQ to provide the following functionality:
  • Allow a *team* of people to maintain a set of quotes/reviewlinks for a product, organization, group of products
  • Show random quotes in sidebars, etc. embedded on other main product pages.
  • Show full pages of quotes for browsing on their own dedicated page.
  • Allow anonymous users to submit comments or links to reviews, that can be approved by managers for inclusion in the quote set.

When a link to a remote website is added, as in the case of a found web review, the UQ service a screenshot and thumbnails it (at varying sizes), and also takes a snapshot of the ENTIRE page at full size, along with grabbing the raw html; this is so that if the review ever goes offline it's still available.  When dealing with email or other entries that don't have web pages, one can choose from a variety of clipart to represent the item.

Some teaser images, still looking pretty damn rough:

Sidebar box with some thumbnails (thumbnail size is one of many options when embedding):
uq_sidebar.png

Showing a full page of items, one has been clicked on to read full details in popup:
uq2.png

Another full page with larger thumbnails (in this "theme" the page will automatically decide how many columns can fit on the screen):
uq3col.png

A minimalistic embedded list of quotes without thumbnails:
simpleuq.png

The idea is to eventually have lots of different themes you can choose to display the quotes/reviewlinks.

Tons more features to add and tons of details to attend to.

Living Room / Flowchart for Choosing a Typeface
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2010, 09:55 AM »
Pretty cool -- poster available too.

So you need a typeface is an alternative way on how to choose fonts (or just be inspired) for a specific project, not just by browsing through the pages of FontBook. The list is (very loosely) based on the top 50 of the "Die 100 besten schriften".

Never underestimate the value of an experiment, even when it yields negative results.  If more of us were smart and brave enough to experiment with ideas when we still have time to learn from them we would all be better off.  Here's a toast to your next experiment!

this is an extremely good idea and commonly needed; in addition to skwire's app there are a few third party tools to ease copying of large numbers of files (teracopy, supercopier); see this thread for long discussion.

i do like schwiiing's description of the "workflow" -- skwire one problem with yours is that it doesn't support drag and drop, which i find essential for this.  i'm a huge fan of supporting drag+drop in these cases and almost never use the build in explorer tree inside such programs, because i almost always have my own explorer window already open at the location i care about.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: AstoundSound

many sound card drivers have support for such audio processing -- worth checking out your existing sound card software before you spend money on something like this.
15540
This is an idea i'm interested in (and possibly interested in coding);

One particular aspect that i was interested in, was the idea that one could take a hierarchical directory tree of files, add some info to it, and then "package" it as a kind of standalone document collection that you could distribute to others.

One idea i had a while ago is the idea of using it to help families create video autobiography type recordings of family members, by having the program prompt the person being recorded with one at a time questions from some large list, recording the video answers to each.

you can already choose what format, compression, etc the video files are saved as.. but it might make sense to leave more elaborate conversion of video files to different formats for the good free tools that specialize in such stuff.

One unique feature we might add to the webcam diary is a one-click burn to dvd option (leveredging an existing free dvd burning utility) that automatically makes menus based on year/month/day, etc.

you definitely want a color picker program, they run from very simple and elegant (ColorCop), to more complex shareware tools that include lots of extra features for coming up with color combinations (Color Schemer).

By the way.. people voting for Card/Board Game prototyping tools might be in for a very pleasant surprise.. i've been talking to another DC member (Codebyter) and we've been hashing out and testing some possibilities -- it's a big project but something i'm definitely interesting..

But that discussion might be continued on this thread.

Since i have so much nice code already written for a webcam recording app / media browser, it's very appealing to be able to turn it into a full fledged new application.

But i think the main thing i need in that case is some brainstorming about what features would be interesting and novel.. just what would this application do that is special?
