If you need a lightweight browser, I think there's a NANY for that.

My largest problem with that is the price.  It doesn't seem commensurate with the features and construction -  the full price they're expecting is $315 USD.  That's the price for a Korean Custom.

How else are they going to pay for all the backer perks? :P

I don't get the appeal of the furry penguin bird things.

I think that they were the attempt at merchandising

Yes, exactly. That much was apparent.

I guess BB8's novelty has worn off and kids need something new to beg their parents to waste their money on. :D

YouTube is FILLED TO THE BRIM with people offering their criticism of the Last Jedi.

Got links to some good ones? I'd be interested in seeing some of them.

The Last Jedi certainly isn't perfect, or even amazing. I'm not trying to defend it or proclaim that it is a wonderful film. I feel it is a step up from the prequels (1-3). And while The Force Awakens and Rogue One were also better (IMO) than the prequels, I feel Last Jedi was the better of these recent three films. The franchise films have gone from being amazingly groundbreaking (4-6) to headscratchingly cringeworthy (1-3) to, as someone I know put it, "it's alright, but the magic is gone" (7, 8, Rogue One).

One note of criticism that I noticed: Many people complained that The Force Awakens was just a rehash of A New Hope. It seemed to me that there were many parallels between The Last Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back.

I saw The Last Jedi yesterday.

I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I'd say it was pretty decent for a recent Star Wars film. It had some cool moments. It had some cheesy moments. It had a bit of slapstick.

I don't get the appeal of the furry penguin bird things. They played a minor, minor, minor part in the movie (which is a good thing, IMO). They were stupid-annoying like minions from the Despicable Me movies, but without fun(ny) bits that almost redeems minions. That said, I found them less annoying than minions, but ultimately pointless and forgettable.

I also don't know anything about the extended universe of Star Wars. I haven't read any of the books, and haven't seen any of the movies or TV shows except the 8 main "episodes" and Rogue One. And I may have caught bits of the Ewok Christmas special as a child.

In response to wraith808's "spoiler," and a bit of my own opinions/observations:
Spoiler
While I agree that the detour to the gambling planet was mostly filler and could have been trimmed down a lot, it did set up a few things for later in the movie:

  • It allowed Finn and Rose to have some shared experiences so it would (almost) make sense when she professed her love for him.
  • It introduced us to the slave children which the film hinted at being the upcoming/rising generation of rebels/Jedi.

One thing I don't understand is why one person had to remain behind on each ship while the rest of the people were being evacuated. It just seemed like a needless sacrifice in an effort to try to artificially increase the feeling of dramatic suspense.

It's cool seeing the progress.

Maybe the date in the thread title should be updated. :D

Thanks for sharing that. I found it intriguing. I had no idea so much had been changed for the original theatrical release.

Kind of explains why the newer films were so (relatively) poorly received.

It seems a few more games have been added to GOG Connect. So check again to make sure you claim everything you can

I wish I had purchase the Final Station during the Autumn sale on steam.  Oh well....

They're both currently the same price at both places, so if you haven't gotten it yet, now might be a good time to and you can still claim it.

N.A.N.Y. 2018 / Re: NANY 2018 Release: Ethereum Denomination Converter
« Last post by Deozaan on December 22, 2017, 01:17 AM »
Updated to fix the only known bug. Here's a short description of what the bug was, for the record:

Ethereum's currency is divisible to only 18 decimal places. EDC doesn't really validate or sanitize input. This meant that if you entered too many decimal places in one denomination in EDC, it would show an incorrect or invalid value in the other fields. Now EDC will make sure that what it displays as the converted value in other fields is valid, but it still does not modify the field which has focus. Meaning you can still enter invalid (e.g., "1.5" Wei) or nonsensical (e.g., "1.5.hello world!" Ether) data.

v0.2017.12.21
- Fixed displayed results when entering too many digits after the decimal place.

There is a chapter on B

Did you intend to write more there? Maybe just "Balance"?

I don't really care about the box (pips and cards, etc.), but I may be interested in the book. Any idea where I can get a (digital) copy of it? I'm not finding anything on the Kickstarter that leads me to a place I can get it.

The Atlas Games website says the digital version is sold by Gameplaywright, but I can't find The White Box Essays on Gameplaywright's site.

Living Room / Re: Best Programming Jokes
« Last post by Deozaan on December 17, 2017, 02:28 AM »
Here's my opinion, as curmudgeonly as it may be:

Part of telling a good joke is knowing your audience. Programmers tend to (try to) be precise in their language, since being imprecise easily leads to bugs in code. Posting a joke in the "Best Programming Jokes" thread implies it will have to do with programming, and sets an expectation for the reader of what to look for in the punchline. If the joke has nothing to do with programming, then it seems fair that a programmer reading the joke may get caught up trying to find the programming part of the joke instead of appreciating the joke on its own merits.

If you want to tell a silly joke that's not about programming, go right ahead. We already have the Silly Humor thread, where such a joke can be given all the appreciation it deserves.

Google finds a vulnerability in Windows 10’s Password Manager

Misleading headline (and article).

Windows 10 doesn't have a password manager. The vulnerability is (or was) in a 3rd party extension for the Edge browser which it seems Microsoft is having installed by default on new installs or something similar. I'm not sure under what circumstances the password manager gets installed. I did a fresh install from the latest (at the time) image in October and this password manager isn't on my machine.

I finally gave Battle Royale mode a try. I only did the 50v50 matches, so I probably didn't get the "true" experience. Of the 6-7 games I played, my team won all but one. And I even managed to survive until the end of a match or two. But often I was killed within the first few minutes and I stuck around as an observer just to see how my team fared.

It's definitely not for me. And I'm certain I wouldn't like the "every man for himself" normal mode.

But I'm finding the co-op Save the World mode of Fortnite to be really enjoyable.

I don't have an answer to your questions, BUT I can point you to a board game that simulates a collectible card game ecosystem..

https://www.kickstar...simulator-board-game
https://boardgamegee...47/millennium-blades

Maybe it can give you some insights..

That review video, and perhaps the board game as well, seems to assume that the viewer/player is familiar with CCGs, how they play, the culture and aftermarket stuff, etc. I got about 10 minutes into the video before I realized it was probably a bad place for me to start. Maybe after I finish checking out the other links I'll go back and watch that. But for now, without the prerequisite knowledge, it doesn't seem relevant to my interests. Or at least I'm not understanding it well enough to see how it is relevant to my interests.

That said, I realize now that I only looked at the review video and didn't check out the game itself on Kickstarter. So maybe I need to give it another try.

I think that's proprietary and guarded information; people try to extrapolate it, but who knows how their results line up.  A couple of articles on this:

http://www.gamestudi...rg/1001/articles/ham

https://remptongames...ctible-card-games-2/

I'm kind of surprised that this kind of information would be considered a trade secret. As much as I've seen these mechanics appear in various forms (or even the many different actual CCGs that exist), I figured it was a "solved" problem.

I started reading your links, for some reason starting with the second one. I think I'll have to come back to it later because I'm really tired (since my brain wouldn't let me sleep last night while thinking about this stuff) and I'm having a hard time staying awake while reading it, but so far it seems really helpful and informative. He analyzes the issue in terms of EP, or Expected Packs you'd have to open to have a 50% chance of finding any given card. Thinking about it in these terms and seeing how these numbers compare across the different rarities really helps give me a better idea of how it works.

I still have more reading and research to do, I but wanted to express my thanks for the help so far.

Living Room / Re: Just tried using a 4k monitor in my setup, did not like it
« Last post by Deozaan on December 14, 2017, 08:23 PM »
My recommendation if you go for a multimonitor setup with different resolutions is to make your 4K monitor your secondary (right) monitor, so if its resolution changes for a game or something, it won't affect anything on the other monitor.
