My biggest objection to C#/.NET has always been the runtime shenanigans. So this to me is incredibly interesting, especially if the produced .exe is as small as the typical C# project output but still completely portably non runtime dependent.

On the topic of ethanol in fuel... some new studies have shown conclusively that it costs MORE in terms of energy to burn ethanol than regular gasoline.

Sure it costs more to burn, and it costs more to make too. But the kickbacks revenue stream on top of the increase in both volume and profit margin make it all worth while. Okay, sure, the little guy takes a beating...but who really cares about that? Certainly nobody (in the upper 1% royalty class) important.

So I'm really confused what they think the magic bullet tech concept in this is.

The "magic" is that once the bullet goes in your head, you can't complain any more ... So only "happy" - or at least to scared to complain - people are left ... Making for excellent press.

It's a sheeple driven self defeating feedback loop.

Then you return to Vurbal's aforementioned mountain of stupid. (But look, it's the *next mountain over* now! Cue "Climb every mountain!"

Nice... Now I get to go to bed with that song stuck in my head. If I have nightmares about the Von Trapp family singing while chasing me with champagne and little white flowers I'll strangle you in the morning.

Directional arrows: Up, down, right, left.  "inverted T" seems an unusual way to put it. (To me, anyway!) Is that a common tech term?

Sorry, Jim...that term really isn't popular these days. Didn't mean to confuse....  ;D

Good thing you didn't say "reverse Tau" like I've heard some geeks and 1337-wannabes call it. ;D

O_o W,T..? I'm not even going to bother with the Greek bit as all things pedantic tend to involve that or Latin it seems ... But the reverse bit? That's just wrong. How do you tell if a (perfectly symmetrical) 'T' is reversed? Are there hooks, sticky pads, or clamps or something on the back? Inverted means to turn upside down...that makes sense. Reverse...not so much.

About 300,000 of those are donationcoder forum alert emails -- i have written before about how i use emails as a low-tech backup system (in addition to the other redundant backup systems in place on DC) -- anytime a post is made, the post is emailed to me.

Bloody bugger, Mouser!

Speaking as a 'systems' person, that's insane doing that! ;D ;D ;D

@cyberdiva  This may be of interest.  http://krebsonsecuri...ash-player-zero-day/

Windows users who browse the Web with anything other than Internet Explorer will need to apply this patch twice, once with IE and again using the alternative browser (Firefox, Opera, e.g.).

Being clueless (just kiddin 40) I don't know how trustworthy this is.

I'd have to go with yes on that one as browser plug-in updates are a case by case per-browser thing.

She makes a scary point about how the act of just trying to avoid being tracked makes you appear immoral or criminal. And that right there is a problem. :(

This reminds me of some research I was doing for school that showed that if a person does *not* have a social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) people view that person as suspicious and as someone who has something to hide. Furthermore, employers look upon that employee (or potential employee) as someone who hasn't kept up with the times and that person is less desirable as an employee.

It's a brave, new world, Mr. Huxley.

Okay, so as long as I have a FaceBook page I can be considered/perceived as "current" regardless of my 70's wardrobe?? Far Out Man! :D

...Kidding aside ... This little peak at the current depth of the rabbit hole scared the shit out of me too.

At least two things about that Gyration keyboard would really bother me:

The Fn key is in the wrong place. Ctrl should always be on the outside.
No numpad.

I'll 2nd that one. Being left-handed and reflexively dependent on a laundry list of hotkeys...that F'n key...would F me up royally. Not to mention that the (std 104 key layout) number pad is the only part of the keyboard I've managed to memorize well enough to use without looking. Hence it's my goto for entering IP address information - complete deal breaker without it.

I don't understand why people keep calling this a Windows XP update. It's not. It uses the "Microsoft Update" automated update system to update a Microsoft product, namely IE. It's not an update to XP. It's an update to IE.

Because that's not as funny?  Nor as interesting.  It would just be run of the mill logic...

Nailed It!

Wondering is there any way of easily checking what updates are installed? (in Win7, they show you a nice list after updating/rebooting, but I dont know how to access that)

Control Panel-->System and Security then look for View Installed Updates under the Windows Update section.

(Ah! The good Ol' days)
When I was a mechanic I think the customer car I test drove I wanted to own the most was a '71 Camaro LT.  That thing was nice.  Really deep bucket seats.  Sharp body styling.  Big engine.  And of course rack & pinion steering.  I didn't get to drive it very far.  But I could tell it handled flat as well as looked cool.  Just taking it around the block was fun.  :)

All right now, don't get me started on back when I turned wrenches for the local Harley dealership ...(I did the Jap's and Britt's back then too - for a different shop)... We'll never get this thread back on topic.. ;) :D

Where have we gone so wrong?

Oh and the E10 thing is a load of crap too. How exactly am I protecting the environment when I have to burn significantly more fuel to get from point A to point B when using E10 compared to straight gas.
-SeraphimLabs (May 01, 2014, 12:56 PM)

Amen to that one brother. I had to replace the float needle every 3 months on my old FL because of the freaking Ethanol drying it out so it was to hard to seal. Christ I had more gas on the ground than went through the engine.

btw I used to have a '68 charger.  But it only had a 318 2 bbl.  No sub 5 second 0-60s for me.

My first car was a 74 Plymouth Satellite with the same engine, a 4 barrel, and a broken (read no) choke ... Now that was a cold blooded bitch. I bought the car off a friend for $400, but that was back in the early 80s (when I was 16 or 17). It left the ground in a drag race and went through the middle (e.g. 6' off the ground) of a security fence - backwards at 80mph - which wrinkled up the sheet metal a bit. I walked away, but the car didn't quite fair as well (Ah! The good Ol' days).

I'm still using the same Saitek keyboard I bought at CircuitCity - Yeah it's that old - over 10 years ago. it's been sloshed with beer and coffee at various points, and probably still has a good bit of cigarette ash in it ... But it also still works perfectly.

...I figure I got my $60 out of it years ago.

These aren't in stock at Newegg, but it's the closest thing I could find to what I actually have http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16823175104

There's a big difference when you build something for a purpose vs. build for a buck.

Damn Straight! That's why after 50 years of technological "advancement" the cars we have now are shit compared to what was available in the late 60s and early 70s. Yeah they're all child safe and cuddly and "Eco Friendly" and squirt butterflies out the tailpipe ... but performance???

1968 Dodge Charger (Auto)         0-60 mph 4.7   Quarter mile 13.3
2013 Dodge Charger Police Car    0-60 mph 5.1   Quarter Mile 13.7
2013 Dodge Charger SXT             0-60 mph 6.5   Quarter Mile 14.9

...What's up with ^that^

Just ran across this code level walkthrough of the Heartbleed Bugg

Update:

Below is what we thought as of 12:27pm UTC. To verify our belief we crowd sourced the investigation. It turns out we were wrong. While it takes effort, it is possible to extract private SSL keys. The challenge was solved by Software Engineer Fedor Indutny and Ilkka Mattila at NCSC-FI roughly 9 hours after the challenge was first published. Fedor sent 2.5 million requests over the course of the day and Ilkka sent around 100K requests. Our recommendation based on this finding is that everyone reissue and revoke their private keys. CloudFlare has accelerated this effort on behalf of the customers whose SSL keys we manage. You can read more here.

Because even grouchy network/IT types like Stoic and me can be dead wrong about the seriousness of things like this. And just because we aren't overly concerned about something doesn't mean it can't be a very serious threat. So please don't hesitate to share anything you think may be of interest here.

+.5 - Us wrong? Never... <fingers crossed> :D

@Crabby3 - Only reason I shredded the Forbs article -(other than being a prick because I'm not smoking)- so quickly is that I'd also been concerned about the hype surrounding the exploit and was researching the details of who exactly had found what, and what if anything could be done about it. So there is/was definite interest in the topic...it just doesn't always manifest well. :)

So like 40 said, don't hesitate to share things of interest.

Shades of the tablet mindset and overall hubris that drove Win8/Metro! (And mostly into the ground AFAIC.)

Did Mozilla hire Sinofsky or something?

Well, after reading skwire's Ghacks article I'm inclined to agree with you. Here's why:
The Firefox button is gone. It has been replaced with what web designers call a Hamburger button
-GHacks

Um... Hamburger Button? Is that the new shit design excuse paradigm being used these days, to just give something a catchy sounding name to explain away why stuff just got piled together in a corner instead of putting in the time to find a right way of doing it?

Yeah, that's a finger-rific design alright ... And I know just what finger to use too.

Finger friendly... can't speak for everyone but I am pretty sure that most people aren't going to be touching their (desktop) screens or laptop screens, especially in enterprise/business environment (since Megabytes does cater to that market as well).

True but with the BYOD marketing stampede to the Cloud pervading the enterprise space with tablets and convertibles from home...it is becoming a popular issue.

And which finger used is up to you. ;)

It appears XP users are basically screwed.

No, just the ones that read Forbs and believe its over the top sensationalized version of the news.

Let's starts with the title:
Microsoft Races To Fix Massive Internet Explorer Hack: No Fix For Windows XP Leaves 1 In 4 PCs Exposed
-Forbes

This is simply bull shit. It's the same size hole as any other phishing scam level attack vector...and just as easy to spot.

FireEye also revealed a sophisticated hacker group has already been exploiting the flaw in a campaign dubbed  ‘Operation Clandestine Fox’, which targets US military and financial institutions.
-Forbes

...And by that I'll just assume it to mean the NSA has found an method/reason/excuse to rummage through their sister agency's knickers drawer.

FireEye spokesman Vitor De Souza declined to name the hackers or potential victims as the investigation is ongoing, only telling Reuters: “It’s unclear what the motives of this attack group are at this point. It appears to be broad-spectrum intel gathering.”
-Forbes

:-\ I'll just go with world domination by the NSA here ... It's what everybody with any sense is thinking already anyhow.

For its part Microsoft has confirmed the existence of the flaw in an official post. It gave limited information on the bug, but admitted “an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.”
-Forbes

Oh FFS They did not! The exploit give the same rights that are assigned to the current user. If the user ain't an admin then neither is the bugg. Standard security practice here folks...there are reasons for them.

A Temporary Fix
While Microsoft rushes to fix the bug, FireEye gave concerned users two workarounds .

1. Use another web browser other than Internet Explorer
 2. Disable Adobe Flash. “The attack will not work without Adobe Flash,” it said. “Disabling the Flash plugin within IE will prevent the exploit from functioning.”
-Forbes

While not the worst advice I've seen it is still again total bullshit! Flash is the most common target but CERT maintains that other file types can be used in the same fashion. That's why it's an IE bugg, and not a Flash bugg. But hay...no reason to keep the facts straight or anything Because driving off a cliff is perfectly safe as long as you do it backwards, right? Wrong!!!

The remaining drivel is just more idiotically panic toned RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! crap directed squarely at XP users ... Even though all MS OS's are equally as vulnerable as their security is configured.

The same basic sound security practices that "work" for Windows 8.1 will still work for XP.

The MS Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit
