« Last post by Josh on May 24, 2009, 09:07 PM »
This happens to me ALL THE TIME! It hasnt happened so much with Vista as it did with XP, but lately the issues have been when the SERVEr I am playing on has an issue and restarts suddenly causing my game to crash rather than an actual game bug.

People who use big words, or words that are very uncommon, to attempt to show their intelligence, education level, or just sound smart. This annoys me because 9 times out of 10 the words are not necessary. Yes, you may be a very educated person, but you do not need to attempt to prove it every time you talk, post, or express yourself.

How about, instead of replacing tabs, we extend them? I would love to see a Windows style GROUPING of tabs from similar domains. I.E, you have 5 donationcoder pages that are in essence grouped into a single tab with a drop down arrow to select between them. You could also navigate them using something like CTRL + DOWN/UP ARROW.

Actually, I refuse to use any media player that cannot be controlled via global hotkeys. The AHK scripts I had created once were buggy and didn't work about 50% of the time requiring manual input from me. Plus, they INTRODUCED the last folder not remembered bug in version .94. It never existed prior to that. They continued to receive bug reports yet never bothered to fix it. It was supposedly fixed for 1.0 yet the RC does NOT have this fix. I can point out at least 5 topics which have mention of this fix as well as GHK support already being included in 1.0.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is Windows 7 RC spyware?
« Last post by Josh on May 07, 2009, 04:38 PM »
This is why I put little faith in TOS and EULA's. How are we to know what really goes on unless you go and inspect the servers? I've had services, verified through the use of mail aliases, who claim to not sell email addresses but somehow I ended up getting spam utilizing the alias I setup specifically for that site.

And back on topic, NO, I do not consider Windows 7 to be spyware. You install it voluntarily after Microsoft disclosed clearly what they are collecting and how they are using it. It's for the purposes of improving the product. Simple solution if you are unsatisfied is to not install it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is Windows 7 RC spyware?

I really don't consider it spyware because it is a release candidate. This is not a final release of an OS designed to be distributed to millions who will pay for it. You are receiving this for free on the terms of the consumer preview program which allows you to test the operating system. If you don't like it reporting on you, don't install it. Microsoft does not attempt to hide this fact and it is clearly stated on their FAQ page. It's designed to help MS fix the product.

Also,

When you run Windows 7 RC we'll collect information in case we need to contact you about Windows 7 RC. We will also collect automated reporting feedback from PCs running the OS to help collectively analyze issues and file bug reports where appropriate. For a complete explanation of what we'll collect and how we'll use it, please read the Windows 7 RC privacy statement.

Personally, while I do use DVD Shrink, I no longer attribute any bugs encountered when using it to a possible bug in a newer application. Reason being, it has been 5 years since DVD Shrink has been updated. Plus, from my experience, I do notice a big quality loss when ripping dvd's using DVD Shrink. On my 46 inch samsung TV, the quality of the picture is degraded into a very blocky format. This is not the case for all movies, but a good majority which are designed on a DVD9 Disc (Dual Layer) will have this issue despite what I choose for the compression ratio.

DVD Shrink was good in it's day and I do wish someone would make a new version or application similar to it, but I no longer blame other applications for bugs which appear when using DVD Shrink.

I see virtualization in my BIOS and it is enabled. Plus, I see no mention of the word HYPER on the virtual-pc pages

Where does it say Hyper-V is required? From what I am reading, it only requires hardware virtualization support on the system board. I can enable virtualization on my 4 year old dell PC quite easily. XP Mode seems to run fairly flawlessly here.

This is bit torrent. At least that is what the program I used resembled quite extensively. The download manager by akami is essentially a bit torrent system. I had 4 seeds on my download

Took me 18 minutes over FIOS to get the entire file. 2.0MB/s

You can now download, and generate unlimited keys for, the Windows 7 Release candidate.

See here for more information.

Please note: This version will begin shutting down every 2 hours in March of 2010 with the RC expiring altogether in June of 2010.

Living Room / Help me build the ultimate metal playlist
« Last post by Josh on May 04, 2009, 06:14 PM »
To all, I am hoping there are some metalheads here. I am very into metal of all sorts. Death, Speed, Thrash, Heavy, Black...etc. I am trying to create the ultimate cd in two forms. One of them is a standard audio cd, 80 mins, for playback in my wife's old car stereo. The other will be an MP3 CD. Now please note, when it comes to metal, I prefer music that is heavy on the guitars, has either some very fast guitar playing to it, and a very loud vocal line.

Here is a list of "Must-Have's" on my soundtrack CD.

Rob Halford - Hells Last Survivor
Judas Priest - Metal Meltdown
Lizy Borden - Lord of the Flies
Metallica - That was just your life
Metallica - The thing that should not be
Metallica - Dyers Eve
Megadeth - Hangar 18
Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists

Now, not all of those are on the cd currently, but those are what I consider essentials to my library.

Any ideas? Thoughts? Quandries? Idiosyncratic concerns?

Zaine, while cross platform capability is nice, firefox and other browsers have this as well. Opera is LACKING in customizability in that if the browser has a feature missing that you want, you cannot add it. You have to hope that one of the power users on the forum can convince the moderators to possibly alert the developers to the request. I am not a firefox zealot, far from it. I do use it, but that is only because at the moment it suites my needs. I have nothing against IE, in fact I swear by IE8 at work. All browsers have their strengths and weaknesses. One of Opera's MAJOR weaknesses is that if you can live with what is included, you are great. You can customize it to no end on the features that ARE there. That is where the problem occurs as stated above, if there is something you want that is not there, you are pretty much SOL.

Also, the wand is a tool which saves and fills passwords, however, it does not let you edit any stored passwords. To recreate a password, you have to delete the old one and then relogin and save the new. Not deleting the old first results in a second entry existing in your login list.

Thank you for reminding me about widgets. What a completely useless addition to a WEB BROWSER. Opera is more focused on NOT being a web browser and being everything else. I guess they should stop focusing on attacking Microsoft and actually listen to what users want and see what users are using on OTHER browsers.

And it still does not support editing stored passwords, autocomplete, extensions, any sort of third party integration, and various other common features that many browsers have supported for years. Innovation is one thing but quite frankly, I would rather have autocomplete over torrent support in a browser. Way to go opera, you are innovating yourself well below the 1% usage line!
