Yeah, I've been getting around it by using some file ops but haven't bothered to script that. This'll save me the trouble  :)

Living Room / Re: Backup Strategy: "The Threes"
« Last post by cranioscopical on May 29, 2011, 11:02 AM »
My routine's pretty much like that. There's redundancy but that's okay by me. It took me many years to take this seriously but I really do believe that it's essential for anyone with material that matters to them, for whatever reason.

  • Weekly imaging to a rotating set of alternating external HDDs (overnight) one of which is always moved off site.
  • Daily copies of e.g., application data and MyDocuments to alternating internal HDDs.
  • Per-project versioned backups, for current projects, to internal and external HDDs and across the network to other machines.
  • Any-time on-demand reversion to previous boot-drive state (boot drive only).
  • Periodic 'convenience' sync of selected sets of data between the originating and dedicated backup external HDDs e.g. photos, audio, software installations.

When I'm working (seldom, thank goodness) it's to air-date deadlines, so this has to save my bacon only once to make the whole thing worthwhile. So far it's saved me more often than that.

Afterthought: docks for 'bare' external drives are very cheap and very useful. The few that I have provide an on-board choice between SATA and USB connections (BlacX). USB3 models are already on the market. Many of us have old drives lying around and such docks put these to good use cheaply and with a minimum of fuss. They might as well be lying around preserving data as lying around doing nothing useful.

Is RollBack like GoBack? If so that driver always blocked hibernation. Probably not much you can do about it if you want to keep Rollback running.
-Carol Haynes (May 29, 2011, 08:40 AM)

Yes, same sort of idea. I think you're right, the two concepts are incompatible and I find RollbackRX too useful to abandon (on this machine, at least).

Thanks to all for the input, probably stopped me from stepping in something that's best avoided  :)

I dread hearing the phillip-ics from both sides.

Now don't be cross, you can have our own slot.

Just noticed this as a Hot Find on Gizmo's site:

What a gentleman you are!

I appreciate that, it'll save me some fidding around if it works as advertised.

Thanks again!

thread wars, left or right ... I can imagine the zealots lining up now

That could take a while to taper off.
1534
My guess is that it's the RollbackRX shield.sys but the system just gives me WDC WD5001ABYS-01YNA0 device as the problem

I've no idea when hibernation was blocked as I never use it.

I'm well versed in the breakfast between boot and work routine .
Once it was a snack, now it's a three-course meal ;D
There's a fair bit of stuff on this particular machine.

So your connection Tera-Bites?

Quite so, my ISP and I are headed for a dust-up.

I wouldn't dare ... too many plot twists  :D.

Nice one

Strange you should mention that in passing!

We're taking turns     Where's the fun in that  tongue?

Are you trying to make some kind of pitch here? If so, we'll have to counter…  and sink it.

I'm still on 1 mbps!  (see attachment in previous post)

And I'm lucky to get 26 kbps! The only downside to living in a forest.

I'd like more of those Reiews!

Failing that, I'd like more of the same  ;)

Thanks again, Carol.

As you will have surmised, I don't (want to) understand much about hardware.

Two of the subsidiary driver files for the device are from MS (disk.sys and PartMgr.sys).
One is from Acronis (snapman.sys)
One is from RollbackRX (Shield.sys)

It's the last one about which I have a mild concern. I don't want to have to reinstall RollbackRX as I'd lose my history of restore points and there's a good reason to hang on to the current set.

In your experience, if I change the WDC WD5001ABYS-01YNA0 driver should I expect that to disable the Shield.sys driver for RollbackRX or, for that matter, any other of the associated drivers?

Since my only reason for even thinking about hibernation is to play with Skwire's misunderstood Boot Snooze ( ;) ) I'd rather leave it incapacitated than create a bunch of issues on a machine that I sometimes use to earn money. So I'm trying to do some risk assessment here  :)

Oh, ye gods ... some of the worst pundits in the world have aggregated in/on one (1) thread  :o.  Is there any hope for salvation  :P?

Possibly, but you'll have to wait your turn…
1542
Thanks, I'll give it a try once I'm certain that everything is backed up from all of my drives.
1543
Apparently, my machine doesn't want to hibernate due to this device (WDC WD5001ABYS-01YNA0).

What's the right way to find the device driver and replace it without doing more harm than good?

Any help appreciated.

TIA

@cranioscopical, you just post yours here and we will adjust it

 ;D ;D

I, too, have some certificate stock. I used to run them off for some of the youngest family members when they had achieved something worthwhile (to them). They were quite popular which probably had more to do with the paper money attached to the back than with the certificates themselves.

Hmmm... Now I wonder if it would be profitable to supply something like an entire downtown area with free Wi-Fi...

Rather like the Chinese were offering for the London subway system during the upcoming Olympics? My, aren't they generous?

By the way, those candle-stick makers get on your wick!
1547
Something like that would be great in a mobile app.

They're around already, unless I've totally misunderstood what's being discussed (and there's a high probability that I have).
1548

I think that Boot Snooze is about the most misunderstood app I've written.

That's the thing that relaxes one's footware, right?
