Living Room / My new project -- nodejs multi-user lobby library
« Last post by mouser on June 20, 2019, 07:29 AM »
I just wanted to give everyone an update on what I've been working on for the last month and a half -- a new open source project, written in NodeJs (server-based javascript).

I've been having a ton of fun learning new stuff.  There's a ton left to be done -- another couple of months worth I think.

But I wanted to give an update so you guys wouldn't think I've been AWOL  :-[

A little about the project:
  • First, it's an excuse to learn and experiment with some new stuff (nodejs), and do some more open source collaborative coding.
  • Second, it will hopefully give me an opportunity to dip my toe into multi-player simple games, the kind my friends and I like to play locally.
  • Third, I think I should be able to use the system to provide a better kind of multi-device synchronization of data for some of my (mobile) apps and future projects.

So, what is this project?  Well it's essentially a server and library api for coordinating communication (and data storage) from many users, organized by virtual apps and rooms, with functions specialized for data synchronization and simple non-realtime multi-player games.  One example use would be as a synchronization back-end, so that you could synchronize the data from one of my mobile apps across all your family devices (without needing to share dropbox logins as is required now when I used dropbox as my synchronization backend).  Another, very different example, would be to provide the back-end lobby services and communication support functions for JackBox party style games, where players gather around in front of a tv, each with their own mobile phone device, and play a game together where they input their actions into their phone, and the centralized game asks questions, etc.

In the coming month or two I'll be posting more about the project and sharing a github link to the source code.  If you are a nodejs person, I'd love to have some assistance on the project.

Living Room / Re: [Article] Software Below The Poverty Line
« Last post by mouser on June 20, 2019, 06:33 AM »
Thanks for sharing this.  We are living in interesting times.  It would be impossible for me to recommend a donation-based funding approach for software developers who are hoping to receive enough money to make it their full time job, as that is a road paved with disappointment for almost everyone.

For most open source / freeware developers, I'm not sure this is a big problem, as few are really trying to generate full time work revenue from their projects.  For those that are, some of the other platforms provide some clues as to how to make it work.. YouTube seems to have spawned an entire new class of workers, who produce enough content and fans that a few of them are actually getting rich off it.  But whether coders could brand themselves well enough for this and whether users would be willing to support them in a similar way seems unlikely.

Open source developers also have a really sticky problem to solve, which is that by nature most medium to large open source projects are a collaboration of many coders, whose participation waxes and wanes.  Thus figuring out how to divide up donations and funding is a difficult problem, that has yet to be solved well.  For single-author open source projects, the path is easier.

The easiest path for open source single-author projects is to be useful to large companies and get funding from a small number of them.  This seems by far the smoothest path to being well paid for open source work.

Let me look into it.  The fact that the text works in the text boxes but not in the arrows suggests it might be fixable, but my code isn't super friendly for some foreign character sets.

I think I can add an option for this easily enough in the Tweak tab.. I'll try to have it in place this week.

Another solution would be to change the setting of FARR so that instead of popping up on the "current" monitor, it always popped up in same place, and have it pop up on the internal monitor; then it might not confuse the graphics driver/utility into thinking it was off screen when it wakes up from boot.

Look for a utility -- could be a graphics driver helper utility -- that is designed to move windows back on screen when they are off the boundaries of the screen.  There are a few programs and graphics driver utilities that have the option to do this.

And just for fun you might try unchecking the box "Show on Taskbar When Active" on the Window Options tab, and the "Do not show icon in tray when minimized" on the Advanced Visuals tab, just to see if they has any effect on the problem.

Looks like your relevant settings are at the default.

I'm thinking the two-monitor wake from sleep could be the culprit, if one of the monitors wakes up more slowly and windows tries to move FARR from a monitor it thinks is no longer connected.

Could I ask you to try a test where you disconnect the external monitor, and then after using FARR as you normally do, let your laptop go to sleep and then wake up, and see if you still experience the problem?

Hi Sascha.

It sounds like maybe some weirdness about the FARR window being minimized to the tray, but the system thinking it should show it.. I'm trying to think why that would happen or how to fix it..
There are some infrequently used FARR options in the "Window Options" and "Advanced Visuals" settings tabs.. Maybe you could post screenshots of your settings for these tabs -- they might hold some clues?

Is there anything else unusual about your laptop?  Do you sometimes have an external monitor connected? Is it possible that there is a utility that is thinking FARR was offscreen when the laptop woke up and is thus moving it back to the main monitor?

Anyone else with Win10 having this isssue?

Yeah we have to remember that what an extreme computer power user cares about is not what normal users care about.  Even the docking station, external keyboard/monitor stuff, most college kids won't give a hoot about that.  They are much more likely to be living in a smaller place and just want something reasonably fast and reliable that they can bring around with them.  For me the main question is still would you rather have a smaller super light laptop that you can carry everywhere without a second thought, or a bigger screen and keyboard that is significantly harder to lug around but is more enjoyable to type/read on.  Having said that, most kids won't know up front which is more important to them, so it's a bit of a shot in the dark.

Another thing to consider, most kids going to college probably care less about the specs and performance of their laptops than their phones and tablets.  Might be better to get a basic laptop and put spare money towards phone upgrade..
1537
Get one with at least one Thunderbolt 3 connector.
That sounds like serious overkill to me.

I would instead make reliability and trouble-free operation my top priority when it comes to this kind of thing.

In these cases having a super fast computer is way down on the priority list.  I'd find out whether she wants a heavier computer with big screen, or a very light computer that's small.
And rather than spending money on squeezing out performance that you'd only notice when playing the highest end games on, put the spare money towards things she can get some use out of, an online cloud backup service and/or a little plug and play backup drive, etc., or printer.

Can someone explain the difference between what you want and what SC does with the selected region capture feature?

My Clipboard Help and Spell will do what you want, but is almost certainly not the simplest or most minimal tool.

I wonder if the problem could be a 3rd party tool that might be moving the capture overlay window -- either DisplayFusion or another similar helper tool that is trying to fix a problem when a window is off screen? Could that be?

Actually, this only happens if I try to take screenshots on the center monitor #2, where the full-size image and the crosshairs move onto monitor 3 for me to crop.  If I hit the hotkey on monitor #1 or monitor #3, it seems to work just fine

ok now this is bizzarre!!!! i am dying to know more.

first things first, can i clarify what kind of a capture you are performing?  It's "grab selected region" right?
And on the monitors where you say it is working, so you mean that if you trigger the capture on monitor 1, you can select a region on the ENTIRE workspace right, across all 3 monitors yeah?

OR are you saying that when you are triggering this capture, it's only ever letting you select a region that is confined to a single monitor?

I would love to have a video screencast of what is going on..

This sounds like it is a version of the problem that happens when the monitors are set to different HIGH-DPI settings (like when you have one 4k monitor and the others not).
Is that your situation? Can you confirm rebooting doesn't help?

Just to clarify, this happens when you do a Selected Region capture (normally shift+prtscr hotkey), yes?
And when it does this, the window that it creates, is it a magnified version of the monitor you are trying to capture?

What SC *should* be doing in this case, is basically taking a screenshot of your ENTIRE workspace (all the monitors) and then overlaying that over your screen, so that it can easily draw on it.  This seems to malfunction when there are multiple monitors and they are set to different high DPI options.
1543
it's more a matter of asking that people make clear their relationship to software they post about, if any.  and trying to not have duplicate posts.
1545
It sounds like its not happy with your config files being on a network location.
If you edit the configdir.ini file in the C:\Program Files x86\FindAndRunRobot you can give it an alternative local drive directory to store all your settings and custom stuff, so it won't need to write to the network drive location.

Just a quick note, if you fancy yourself a detective, Chronicles of Crime has become my favorite board game of the last 12 months or so.  Absolutely outstanding.  The Noir expansion is great.

I'm assuming you have this setting enabled:

And do you have the notification area setting for Screenshot Captor set to "Show icon and notification" in your windows system tray options?

Having said all this -- I can see some value in having a simple app that would let you overlay text on your screen and easily move it around, change size+text.
Wouldn't be too hard too do.  Could be useful for people recording video of screen, etc.
It would be a standalone app -- I wonder if someone would consider making such a coding snack..

Mobysaurus / Re: Mobysaurus

Try what curt says about .net being installed.

The new DLL  should be the solution: http://www.dcmembers...wordzilla/downloads/
Download and put the dll in the mobysaurus directory replacing the original one (ignore that it says its for Windows Vista).

If it still gives error can you screenshot the error for us?

(maybe try a reboot?)
