General Software Discussion / Re: Wave? Good-bye!
« Last post by rgdot on November 23, 2011, 08:33 PM »
Google wave was collaboration, the hype and therefore the expectation was more a problem than the product itself. They got the interface wrong too, one column (usually a third of the screen) for talking while the 2/3 were holding lists (subscribed, recent waves, contacts, etc) of sorts. Clumsy look and poor responsiveness killed Wave

In my opinion in the age of online apps pricing for offline apps is even more difficult. There are niche, one (or few) feature apps (extensions, programs, etc.) that go for much less than $39. My limited experience suggests that you make a standard version for as feature rich and cheap as possible, under $30 perhaps. Then go for it for the pro version, $80 or more.

$10 each or for every 5 a NANY pledge  ;)

Yep very true, simple text files. In that sense you could maybe play with todo.txt too.

The above mentioned Picture Collage Maker Pro giveaway is now online

Thanks Curt, I should promote it more :)

That's  and pretty unique as far as I have seen.

(Shamelessx2 plug: Will be having another Picture Collage Maker giveaway this week if anyone is interested)

FWIW
The free ones are or were questionable when I last used them.

Avira: Prompts (pop up, pop under) to buy pay version
Avast: It needs (or needed?) yearly renewal via email and it prompted you months in advance. Effectively a sales pitch like Avira.
AVG: Reasonably sales pitch free but I wouldn't exactly call it lightweight.

Thanks  Might be time to buy it.

Both have background options (gradient, color, etc) but I don't recall if they have transparency (I have reviewed those two relatively recently)
1512
Collage software may do that. Have a look to confirm that they do:

CollageIt http://www.collageitfree.com/
Picture Collage Maker http://www.picturecollagesoftware.com/

(not free)

I had a Canon that after I ran and played sports with it in my pocket became similar to this permanently.
1514
I have seen similar to your screenshots (but not the JPEG errors) when the camera's CCD went bad when the camera was moved or jerked too much.

When actually taking the photo or after a serious jerk (bump)?

Generally I'm pretty steady when taking a photo (after long experimentation of long exposures without a tripod)...

In my experience serious jerk

That's 90% of reason all use third party providers like paypal or gateways (http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Payment_gateway) which 'send' info when needed. Storing credit card numbers on your own servers is asking for trouble.

And Paypal stores credit card numbers...?

Their defenses go beyond encryption on a web facing server and a SSL certificate, this is a case of going with better security infrastructure.

Not a gamer so have no idea how they function....Steam themselves shouldn't be storing credit card numbers, encrypted or otherwise

Dark Sky - Weather Prediction, Reinvented
DarkSkyStorms.jpg
Goal$35,000
End DateNov 30, 2011 12:53pm EST
Project Creator(s)Adam Grossman & Jack Turner
Location-
Minimum Pledge$1
DescriptionWhat Dark Sky is...

1) An accurate short-term weather predictor.

Dark Sky is an app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch that predicts the weather.

Using your precise location, it tells you when it will precipitate and for how long. For example: It might tell you that it will start raining in 8 minutes, with the rain lasting for 15 minutes followed by a 25 minute break.

How is it possible predict the weather down to the minute? What's the catch?

Well, the catch is that it only works over a short period of time: a half hour to an hour in the future. But, as it turns out, this timespan is crucially important. Our lives are filled with short-term outdoor activities: Travelling to and from work, walking the dog, lunch with friends, outdoor sports, etc.

Loosely belonging to the same category. Scrivener for windows has reached 1.0

Prefer a more traditional planning environment? View and edit the synopses and meta-data of your documents in Scrivener’s powerful outliner. Organise your ideas using as many or few levels as you want and drag and drop to restructure your work. Check word counts, see what’s left to do using the Status column. Scrivener’s outliner is easy on the eyes, too, making it ideal for reading and revising an overview of a section, chapter or even the whole draft.

 (see attachment in previous post)

It may be important to note (in case it isn't obvious) that C has been photoshopped. C was originally some web site, such as Facebook, IIRC.

But did she have to ask the audience? Don't think that part is photoshopped, which takes the humour to another geeky level  :P

Some versions of office have 'Paste Special' (Edit--->Paste Special). Might be worth a look at its options.
