Thanks guys, I rarely visit this section. One of you guys needs to update that review or write a new one. It's showing its age!

You could do a startup repair using your Vista install cd/dvd, but why not download and install Paint.NET instead? It's the same type of program, only with way more features. (It's free.)

I've no idea short of an MD5 checksum file comparing the empty file to the valid/original file. Until you listened to the song, how would you -- or a program -- know that it is damaged or has the end cut short?

Thanks for the correction, Darwin, and Josh, exactly what is wrong with the screenshot you linked to?!  :P

I was going to try to do a review of renamers once, but after studying about 20 of them, each had their own UI and there was almost no way to compare them. Like more and more software, it came down to, "use what you like."

BRU is infamous for its GUI, which is considered cluttered...

On the contrary, Darwin, I love the fact that every option is in front of me, instead having to tab through endless menus, tabs, and dropdown lists. Same goes for Flexible Renamer, which recently got a version upgrade. I just set how I want for repetitive job, save it as a profile, then BAM! I'm done.

[J-Mac]: I can see why someone may decide to stop developing! But even if they don’t continue, if I use the program for a decent length of time I feel I should donate if I can.

I may be wrong, but I think Bulk Rename Utility went from freeware (with a donation option) to adware. To me, that's the worst move you can make. Seeing a rotating ad such as the one in FoxIt is like a needle in my eye.

9. FSF Sues Cisco

Good for them. The "cost" of using GPL'd code is giving back. Otherwise, you use LGPL code (Lesser GPL). It ain't rocket science, but Cisco thinks they should profit from others' work. Lord knows the RIAA wolves would slice them to pieces.

PS: Don't forget that the Bush Administration was bookended by the Enron scandal and now Madoff and the mortgage insanity. Hoover couldn't top that in his dreams!

[Shades]: If you would put my sock in it, it would be a weapon of mass destruction...and Bush would actually be happy with that, because then he had the proof that the whole war was legit and that he is a "liberator". Well, he will go into history as a "liberator" anyway...how many US citizens did he "liberate" from (most of) their money anyway?

Ha!  ;D  Thanks for the Dana Blankenhorn link. I was unaware he had a site, and that piece is particularly informative. Dissecting how Madoff made off with everyone's cash will be the subject of many documentaries. And yet the SEC was told on several occassions that Madoff's numbers were obviously fixed (he was reporting more profit from trades on any given day than the entire volume in the market for that same day!). His won't be the last Ponzi scheme we see, but maybe it's time to start handing out life sentences to these Wall Street crooks just to send a message that wiping out people's, endowments, charities, and others' wealth is lower than my shoe.

[Stoic Joker]: The only thing that will truly "Fix" the internet security issue is a change of attitude. People need to stop thing of their computers in the context of a TV or radio, and start thinking of it in the (exact) same context as their car. Not paying attention on the Interstate highway, you die (or have a costly repair). Not paying attention on the information highway, you die (think identity theft, etc.) or have a costly repair.

Wow, couldn't have said it better. The browser has become the focal point of any computer; you can't live without one very long. If only one could go back in the time machine at that coding moment and say to Microsoft: "You may not want to grant ActiveX controls that much control over Windows. Why not stick with Java applets instead." I'm damn impressed with the speed of the patch.

Indeed, no software (and no OS) is completely secure (repeat 3 times and click your heels), therefore it's really a question of where you draw the line. Since IE is a repeat offender, how many more strikes do you give it before you give up?

If you're willing to live with the hassle and ongoing risks, then your chances of being one of the 2% -- or whatever this week's number is -- is worth it. I thought IE7 would knock a lot of these recurring threats down, but it doesn't appear so. I don't know, but does UAC help with these attacks if someone tries to install something on your system, or does UAC only apply to the OS?

Shoes are symbolic. Khrushchev is probably remembered more for banging his shoe at the U.N. than many other things. This is especially ironic now that Bush is turning every leaf in an attempt to be remembered as a "liberator" rather than war monger. The shoes have voted!

Yesterday's BBC story on IE's latest security flaw makes me wonder whether it's time to give up on IE and [permanently] move on to another browser. Said Mr Ferguson: "If users can find an alternative browser, then that's good mitigation against the threat." Further, "An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. As far as I understand it, that means there is a real danger that Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 users could be opening the door to cyber criminals to allow them to ransack the contents of your hard drive."

What to do?
- Make sure anti-virus software is up to date.
- Run Internet Explorer 7 or 8 in "protected mode."
- Set Internet Explorer zone security setting to "High."
- Windows users should enable Automatic Updates so that they get any patch that is issued ASAP.

Bruce Schneier has long held that Microsoft sees security as a marketing problem rather than a technical problem. How many more chances do we give IE, or is it finally time to switch, given the many good choices available?

Perhaps, Dormouse, but that's why I like the donation option for software with lifetime licenses. No one has to donate a dime, but for someone like me who has benefitted from WinRAR, XYplorer, et al. for years, there's only so many licenses I can buy for family. Once a year or so, I'd like the option to donate on impulse a small amount -- $10, $20, or $25 -- just to say thanks for continued development.

I think most developers think that users would see this as covertly greedy, but I hope they don't. It's merely an option that's there.

I know people around the world, but I also need to know when they're awake or when their markets open and so on. There are a thousand uses for Google -- and I'm sure LifeHacker has listed all of these at some point -- but here are few you may have forgotten.
