Do you know VBA?  Not sure exactly what you want to do, but VBA would allow you to join spreadsheets from different workbooks, GUI or no GUI.

Just wanted to add a plug for the Evoluent Vertical Mouse.   I have been using one for a year or two now (left and right hand... one for work, one for home!).  It's not perfect, but it is fairly comfortable!  www.evoluent.com

Kevin

edit: just noticed app already has a link to the vertical mouse... but the one I gave is the main page.
edit2: also, if you are interested in the whole RSI thing, "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook" ( $13 on Amazon) has been an amazing guide to pain relief.  It has worked amazingly well for me, though I will not claim that it will do so for others.  It takes a little time and effort, but over the last year, I would definitely say it's been the best $13 I have spent!

Just wanted to let everyone know:  Myinfo (www.milenix.com) is currently working towards version 4, due out sometime in 2007.  Now is a great time to post suggestions in their forum if you've tried MyInfo and found it lacking.  The moderator is Petko and here is the thread which shows some of the planned features for v4: http://www.milenix.c...viewtopic.php?t=1947

Caps lock is a must have!  I do CAD drafting at work and it's essential when all text on a drawing is supposed to be uppercase.

Reminds me of The Incredible Machine, which was a very fun game!

[edit] anyone know freeware/shareware status of this?  The webpage does not have much information.

Well, at work I press scroll lock all the time - it's part of my KVM's hotkey (uncustomizable).

But, I would have to say that the "right-click" key is the most unused key on my keyboard.

The other two that are right up there are right-ctrl and right-alt, in that order.

General Software Discussion / Re: Stickies 6.0a released
« Last post by kfitting on February 04, 2007, 04:18 PM »
I thought you could stick stickies to a particular webpage?  The recognition is based off the window title.  I've only tried it while coding in the Excel VBA editor, but I stuck the note to only the project I wanted.  As long as your browser shows the website in the titlebar it should work.

Kevin

[Edit] I just did it with this page.  Make sure you make the note always on top!  A little playing around and you can probably make notes for domains as well (dependent on the website's title layouts).

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: OCR & paste

Looks pretty cool... I played with it a little and that is a nifty feature to have.  Unfortunately, Evernote is a huge paradigm shift for me and I don't see myself using it (though I can see where it has a lot of power!).

As far as OCR stuff is concerned, I wish you could export the text to an RTF file.  That's what I'd really like... to be able to take a picture (or a screenshot) and turn it into editable text.  But, thanks for the heads up on that.  At least someone is developing along these lines!

Features and abilities wise texnotes is awesome.  However, my conclusion, every time I've tried it, is that it takes way too long to do anything in it.  Obviously, user interface is a highly subjective field and I understand that texnotes is the best answer for some people, I just cant seem to get into it.

But, I think it's interesting because, like Nudone and Superboyac, I've tried a bunch of different apps for this kind of thing and I find myself in a similar position as nudone: I just want an interface to my data!  I have all sorts of files: textfiles, documents, pdfs, pictures, etc, and I want to organize, relate, and catogorize them.  But I dont want to:

1. spend a huge amount of time inputing and organizing the information (dont misunderstand me here, I realize that any classification that is meaningful will require some effort to input.  I'm tired of GUI design and Program architecture (ie, "required" fields for things that arent really required) that succeeds only in making the input process cumbersome, something I personally feel Texnotes does).

2. Lock my data away in some proprietary format that requires me to do the same long tedious input process if ever I choose to switch programs or the program is discontinued.  (Once again, I realize that different programs have different features and you cant do a 100% conversion in many cases.  But the data, the text/formatting, ought to be easily accessible.)

All this being said, I think I'm too idealistic.  I strive to have one program or one center of focus for ALL my information but just keep coming to the realization that, due to the amount of data and the multitude of types of data this will not happen.  Everytime I find myself longing for a minimalist type program, I find myself wanting a feature from a bloated one!  Perhaps, file explorers are something of an answer.  What about a combination file browser/organizer.  Something that would rely on individual files, and store all other data in individual files, but serve as an interface, showing their relationships.  Oh wait, this could be called a database filesystem...

Oh well... so I agree with Nudone... searching, searching, searching for that application that meets (in my case anyway) what are probably unrealistic expectations.  So, there's my rant, largely incoherent since I've left out most of the background to save time inputting it into this forum post (I hate inputting data!!).

I've been using NHC for awhile and haven't noticed the resource problem.  Currently at less than <1% CPU and 3.45 mb RAM.  Of course, different systems will react differently!

Dont forget CVS export (at least CVS... Excel and OO Spreadsheet would be nice too!).  Proprietary formats are fine... but I'm getting fed up with putting data into one application and then having to worry about what happens when the app goes goes bust or I find another app that does more what I like.  Import/Export functions seem to be the most overlooked part of any app...  good to see you're including CVS import!!

Don't think this has come up, but is this behavior intended?

- bring up FARR and enter a search
- open the options dialog and go to the "Display" tab
- choose different options for the "Result Label Path."  Choosing none gives full path.  Further, if I choose the other options, files show the level of path that I would expect while folders continue to show full path

This isn't not a huge deal, just something I saw while playing around.

Dont know how much effort you want to put into this, but ImageMagick (http://www.imagemagick.org) is extremely powerful... essentially it's scripting for pictures.  It does a lot more than just batch converting, but it is more customizable than some other solutions.  I have never used it, but I have looked into it from time to time to see if I had a need for it.

mouser, would it be possible to allow the user to choose window classes, titlebar names, etc of the program they wish to control?  A comma delimited list or something would work I think.  This way, if two programs use the same shortcut, the user could assign a different shortcut for each program.

Let me second nontroppo on the speed issue... it's better than it was, but faster would be better still!  Is there any way you could buffer all keystrokes after the initial FARR call-up?

I have not stopped using FARR, though I can understand nontroppo's frustration... and support!  Thanks mouser,

urlwolf:  I was just playing around with MyInfo tags (I hadnt prior to my previous post!) and the Myinfo interface is an interesting one.  You add a couple tags to one "document" and those tags are immediately able to be chose (drop-down) by other documents in that file.  Once tags have been added, you mouse-over the tag and select one and the filter immediately shows documents with that tag.  Like I said, interesting.  Have to see how it works in practice.

I agree that tags need to be able to be assigned, but I slightly disagree.  To bring order to a non-ordered system some amount of effort must be put forth!  Order cant just happen (well, meaningful order anyway).  But, I know what you mean.  If it tags 20 mouse-clicks to add a tag, that's overkill.

MyInfo isnt perfect... but it does have an interesting way of handling some of the problems mentioned in this thread.

Just thought I'd throw out a suggestion for MyInfo again... just taking another look at it tonight and it's quite powerful.  It's "tree pane" now offers customizable columns (text, date/time, pop-up list, etc) as well as default tags and comments columns, plus it's editor is quite functional.  Play around... there are a few rough edges but this is very promising!  (note: based on the TRichView component)

I know many people here read ShellCity so I may be repeating what people already know, but they have a small app that appears (I have NOT tried it yet) to do what is requested here.  Alpha so beware!

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: OCR & paste

I've tried Screen Desktop OCR... it seems like a Kleptomania clone to me.  There are about 3-4 programs that claim to do the same thing and do it almost exactly the same way!  (Even down to the program icon... Top OCR is another name that sounds familiar, but I could be wrong)  The problem is, they dont seem very reliable.  They do great with text in a window, but pictures must need to be perfect cause I've never gotten a picture to work.  I tried them on AutoCAD and got a bunch of gibberish.  I don't know, they just need more refinement or something.

I like ABBYY's claim to be able to use a digital camera as a scanner, that's awesome... but the price tag is, needless to say, pricey!
