...since he's free of any financial inducement, he can follow his own weird when it comes to design, craftsmanship, and the projects he'll take on.

Sounds a lot like Gene Roddenberry's future.  :-*

Obvious question coming: Wouldn't contraction cure this entire situation?

Baseball certainly could use it.

Ironically, the misnomer "god particle" for the Higgs Boson, if discovered, would effectively kill off the idea (or need) to explain god. The Standard Model will be complete at that point, showing us how matter interacts, and gains mass and attraction. Not sure god-believers would know whether they should be depressed, but then nothing would let them give up their metaphors.

Some day you will purchase a low powered device incapable of any type of data storage. It will come with a built in RPC-like client, which will load and ask you for a credit card number the first time you boot it up. There will be nothing else available. The actual OS, all the apps, and all your data will be in the cloud. There will be no more malware, there will be no more piracy, there will be no more obtaining anything from unapproved sources. Customizing options will be limited. There will be no more tinkering and breaking things. Apps purchased will be updated automatically. The OS will be updated automatically. This will all be at the server level. A developer that fails to keep up with things and make necessary changes will have their software wiped from all user accounts. I said this 3-4 years ago. It is my computing nightmare. Let's see if it comes to pass. It has already started.

April nailed it, but the first step outside the mobile space seems to be Google's Chromebook, which, while very popular with those who bought them, is the first step. And as 40hz noted, UEFI is the first step for Windows machines.
______________
I do not like this [computing] future. Can we go back to when this was all fun rather than goddamned lawsuits, convoluted patent wars, takedowns, and treating users as criminals?

According to Baldwin, the problem wasn't that he was told to turn off his phone. It was that everyone around him was playing with their phones, too. He was singled out. When he pointed to others still on their phones, the attendant got all LA COP on him. That's when he excused himself, went to the bathroom and tweeted about it. ha. F*ck the police!

Call it corporate computing, whether you're subject to an OS or the Cloud (amazon/google, etc.). Either way, if they can remotely delete apps, they can also remotely delete content in preparation for SOPA. One example: I have playlists on YouTube, but just about every time I revisit them, some (or several companies) have plastered a big fat TAKE DOWN notice on the page where the video used to be, making some claim to its distribution, viewing, or playback limitations. One video had five different companies objecting to it being online. Mind you, not the amateur video itself, but a piece of content in the video!

If you don't think groups like MPAA, RIAA, et al. through ACTA/SOPA/DMCA legislation will not enable corporations to do the same to your computer, I have some imaginary credit default swaps to sell you. To hell with them, I'm occupying my computer! (And yes, go Linux, or whatever else isn't trying to prosecute your HD.)

Microsoft: We Can Remotely Delete Windows 8 Apps
Like Apple and Google, Windows Store will include a 'kill switch' to disable or eliminate rogue apps

"In cases where your security is at risk, or where we're required to do so for legal reasons, you may not be able to run apps or access content that you previously acquired or purchased a license for," said Microsoft in the Windows Store terms. "In cases where we remove a paid app from your Windows 8 Beta device not at your direction, we may refund to you the amount you paid for the license," Microsoft added. The company also noted that along with the app, it may also scrub data created by the app from a device. "If the Windows Store, an app, or any content is changed or discontinued, your data could be deleted or you may not be able to retrieve data you have stored," Microsoft said.

I didn't think the black bar would last, but I did send some specific feedback on the icon-based Gmail. It works find in Docs/Drive, but not Gmail.

Note to everyone: stop fixing what's not broken.

I take it none of you use either Mint or G+. Oy. More often than not, the reason [Mint] users bitch about a particular default choice is that (a) it's being changed for no reason, and (b) no one asked the users if they wanted it changed. Google is using open source to power Android far past iphone/iOS sales, and you think they're going to burn that bridge? Yeah, that makes sense (if you're Oracle).

If you have verify enabled, it will send you a message each time you logon from another physical device. Make sure it's disabled:

All these cleanup projects are the work of Larry Page. Keep experimenting, but we're not going to carry something indefinitely as the world moves on. Chromebooks are down to $299 for the Holidays, too (wi-fi only though). I like Google right now because its apps serve me well (Docs, G+, Gmail), but I'm also ready to remove my data at the drop of a hat when they start walling themselves in, as facebook is doing.

Yea, like I said, I was so accustomed to reading to the bottom of the message and finding the delete button there. But I simply assigned the letter 'D' to the delete keyboard shortcut and that's better anyway.

...it makes me wonder whether Google are not doing this deliberately

I don't think so. They've upgraded all their UI's across their services (YouTube really blows now). Thus, I think it's a move toward more consistency. Docs looks similar, but hey, still no control over styles! Thing is, without extensions, I don't Google is ever going to jazz Gmail too much. Sure, you can have the new HD themes, but jeez those are annoying.

I do hate that the text buttons were replaced with icons. At least give ME the choice! Also, the bottom row of REPLY/FORWARD/DELETE buttons of each email was removed. So I created a better keyboard shortcut for deletion (at https://mail.google..../#settings/shortcuts).

Gates maybe, but not Microsoft. ThinkProgress had this sponsorship of an extremist conservative group in the US:

They got to do better than this credibility killer, but like so many corporations, they get in bed with both sides of the political aisle.

Jobs spent his entire life telling everyone he was the smartest guy in the world. Gates was pretty much a world class prick during his heyday, as are most spoiled rich people. At least as Renegade says, he's seen the bigger picture. Mother Teresa is like most god-believers to me -- their thinking is based on a psychosis that believes suffering and evil are good for you, and not something to be fought against. I like to think I'm better than that.

I love the part about "I like parrots, but if you have me over, don't go out and buy a parrot!"

And I wouldn't consider switching to free software only. However, it's the idea that I'm attracted to -- making a contribution, making the world a better place without it costing you an arm, leg, your privacy, all your cash, your data, your credit cards, etc. (Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft -- corporate computing in general). The best someone like Steve Jobs could do was take a 30% cut and tell you to be grateful you're allowed to even make an app. No one's perfect, but at least Mr. Gates uses his wealth to help humans.
