Finished Programs / Re: The Mouser Utility - Requested by App103
« Last post by mouser on December 15, 2010, 05:46 PM »
What does it do you ask? It's an inside joke they tease me about on irc since i SUPPOSEDLY have the habit of leaving conversations in mid discussions and ignoring people:

<Stephen66> Ill explain it, seeing as it doesnt run on ur pc
<Stephen66> Its a taskbar icon...2 context menu items...Get Attention, and, Exit
<Stephen66> neither do anything
<Stephen66> it just sits there
<Stephen66> ignoring you

Note that you can't exit it once started, you have to use task manager to kill it.

No point installing it to appreciate the joke, save yourself.  cute though. :P

i laughed too  ;D

I have to say that it wasn't until a minute or so in until my brain started decoding the words they were speaking.. before that i couldn't understand a thing.  thankfully the decoding kicked in before the chorus.

Let us know how it goes Chris, you have some good applications there.
Simplifying and narrowing your focus seems like it could be a good idea.

wraith I urge you to watch the documentary on Ellsberg -- even if you don't find yourself agreeing with him at all, it might be useful to see how a former marine and loyal government supporter found himself slowly transformed over the course of a few years into a whistle blower willing to go to jail.

ok seems like it's not a completely isolated case, so a new test version will be out before end of week that should identify the cause of the problem and the fix.

sturza, did you copy your old config files from your windows xp install? perhaps that is the common thread?

If you're running a business, the single best thing you can do for your customers is to remain in business. And the only way you'll be able to do that is if you make some money for yourselves along the way.

That is a really important point, especially in the software business.  I've tried to make the same point about donationware in the article i wrote about DonationCoder in 2006:

Furthermore, while you may be tempted to tell your users that if they don't donate you won't be able to continue coding, this is probably a very bad idea for a software developer. It's not like a public broadcasting station, where there is no penalty for a watcher to start watching a show and then have the show go off the air. In such a scenario, predicting doom unless enough donations are received may be a viable incentive and threat. For software, if the visitors to your site get the feeling that you may stop work on and support of the software if you don't raise enough money, that alone may be enough to scare them away.

Users don't want to invest their time and effort learning to use your software and become dependent upon it only to have it dissapear. Because of this, you really need to adopt a somewhat unusual approach, and make a contract with your users: You will be there for them, through thick and thin, and in return you ask for some monetary support. If you can't make a promise to support the software no matter what, then you can't expect your users to donate, do beta testing, and file bug reports, and then risk finding themselves left out to dry because there aren't enough people supporting you. You need to set a baseline of support you are willing to guarantee no matter what - and then you can offer further incentives for donating beyond that.

Love it  :-*
Great NANY submission.

Was going to suggest drag+drop support but just watched the video and I see it's already implemented.

Only thing that might be nice is a printing function, though i suspect anyway who would want to print it on a nice color inkjet already has a program to print images so it's not really needed.

Welcome to the site, gross.

I didn't realize that problem with spaces at start and end of filenames affected Launchbar Commander; it has been pointed out to plague my Find and Run Robot program.. i really should fix that, even though it's hard to think of a case where this isnt a mistake in file naming -- it certainly is confusing.

i'm afraid to say it has been improved a lot since i wrote that post  :P

it actually works pretty perfectly for me now, autohiding and autosliding.

if anyone has any trouble with it in latest versions please let me know what improper behavior you are seeing.

Hi adi,

Congratulations on your latest project -- it looks quite nice

And on behalf of DC thank you very much for the free license offer; you may want to consider some limits on that or you might kill off your potential customers -- maybe make it a limited time or number offer, etc.

How do you guys create and write so much is what i want to know! You must have a busy team working on this stuff!

ps. i touched up your post a little -- you don't need so many links to your site, etc.

Official Announcements / Re: DonationCoder.com New Server Migration Coming Soon
« Last post by mouser on December 13, 2010, 09:19 AM »
We are moving from mysql5.0x to mysql5.1x, and moving from a native 4gb linux install (centos) to a virtual machine (VmWare ESX) gentoo install on a machine with 8gb.  Both using same Dual Processor Quad Core cpu.

We seem to have tracked down the problem to mysql performance when sorting larger tables..
We've played with dozens of mysql settings with very little effect.

More details as we figure out more.

« Last post by mouser on December 13, 2010, 04:29 AM »
This is still the old server..
We had everything reproduced and tested on the new server, EXCEPT we could not get the new mysql 5.1 database stuff running at a good speed.  Problem is being worked on and we will move when it is solved.  Obviously the last thing we want is to move servers and have the forum feel slower.

Apologies for the downtime!

We are back up on the same server as we have been -- the move to the new server will happen later this week probably.
Thank you for your patience.

Living Room / Re: Would someone mind recommending a good laser printer?
« Last post by mouser on December 12, 2010, 07:58 AM »
One thing to look for when selecting a laser printer is whether it has a "straight-through" paper mode, which lets you set the paper path so that pages exit the rear of the machine instead of curving up to the top.  This can be important when printing on heavy stock which otherwise curls.

Living Room / Re: and now the next question is about chat!
« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2010, 07:07 PM »
Ditto what deo said, but it's even less "useful" than he describes it.

It's really a place where people can come in 24hours a day, 365 days a year, and find someone with a sympathetic ear to talk about nonsense or joke around and just in general waste time when they are bored.

It can be fun and funny but much of the time the chat channel is pretty quiet and idle -- so don't expect anything but fellow dc members who come and go and just like to talk a little while they are working on other things.
