N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Pledge: Mouser App - Webcam Diary

I have posted a beta version here available for download, and created a forum section here.

Very Important:

This application is not going to be useful to many people, but if you are someone who thinks you can benefit from it, it is *VERY* important that you take some time to experiment with the different resolution and compression choices available in the options.  If you do not do so, you will end up with huge video files that have lots of dropped frames.

I could use assistance with finding a good set of reliable settings for some of these values; and please do share your experiences finding a good combination of resolution/compression values.

Webcam Video Diary / WebcamVideoDiary: v1.03.01 - Mar 4, 2015
« Last post by mouser on December 22, 2010, 07:27 PM »
Download latest version from Official Web Page: HERE.

Screenshot_main_ver001.jpg

This program is being released as part of the NANY 2011 challenge.

What is Webcam Video Diary good for?
  • Takes snapshots and videos and lets you annotate them with text notes.
  • Organizes images/videos automatically in folders based on the date.
  • Highly customizable user interface and recording options.
  • Designed to stay resident in the system tray and be triggered by hotkeys, for users who intend to use it throughout the day.

It is still in very early beta stage, so expect:
  • Very rough edges
  • No help file to speak of
  • You need to really configure it and experiment to get good initial webcam configuration settings.

Noteworthy features:
  • All video/image/notes are standard files stored in normal directories on your disk that you can work with in other programs.  Notes are stored in standard standalone .txt files with same base name as their associated image/video files.

An example usecase for Webcam Video Diary:
You want to be able to take image snapshots from your webcam throughout they day and annotate them with notes, while you are working:
  • Configure a hotkey to trigger an image capture.
  • Configure it to minimize to the tray.
  • Configure it to switch to media file view after taking an image capture.
  • Now just minimize the program to the tray.  When you are ready to take a new image, hit the hotkey; image snapshot will be taken and filed into the folder associated with the current date, and pop up with the cursor in the notes field for you to enter your notes for the screenshot.
  • You can configure the program to keep the video connected at all times for fastest response, or to only connect the webcam when an image snapshot is triggered.
  • Same thing can be done for videos.

Feature requests welcome.

let me suggest the same thing i suggest to people who are creating new forums:

Start out with the smallest number of categories/sections you possible can, and expand only when things get busy enough to demand re-organization.
There is a big temptation to logically organize everything into tons of hierarchical categories, but when you start out with so many different isolated areas in the beginning, it just feels empty and pointless.

Just my 2 cents.

Living Room / Re: OpenBSD: Only two remote holes [...] - the rest come from inside?
« Last post by mouser on December 22, 2010, 10:08 AM »
From slashdot:

OpenBSD lead developer Theo de Raadt said on a discussion list Tuesday, that he believes that a government contracting firm that contributed code to his project 'was probably contracted to write backdoors,' which would grant secret access to encrypted communications. But that he doesn't think that any of this software made it into the OpenBSD code base."

whether they actually succeeded in getting code in or not, this is pretty huge.

One of my new years resolutions this year is to rededicate myself to improving my applications more frequently, including CHS.  So perhaps one thing for us to do in the new year is make a collective list of top priorities for features to add to it and i'll can get started adding the most important stuff first.

Developer's Corner / Re: Motivation For Freeware Maintenance?
« Last post by mouser on December 21, 2010, 04:25 PM »
I think there is another side of the coin that also bears talking about.

Whether you are a blog writer or a small independent coder, it's quite common to spend a lot of time creating stuff and feeling like it's unappreciated.  Even with such a great community at DC, it happens that someone will post something and it falls through the cracks -- no one notices it or it doesn't grab their attention.  And then other times something random will get tons of attention and generate huge enthusiam and it would be easy to start to feel like you aren't appreciated.

Now some people handle this by re-doubling their efforts to create and write stuff that other people will notice and appreciate.  And that's certainly one approach.  But another approach is to find the part about what you are doing that gives you pleasure, and not overly concern yourself about needing to find an audience.  Don't make your enjoyment be dependent too much on the reactions from others.  If you can figure out how to get your own satisfaction from what you do, everything else is just gravy.

i think you've asked that on the right forum.

one of the best things about the donationcoder forum is how fun it is to interact with users and have your software discovered by more people who enjoy it and say so.  it can be really rewarding to have people who like and use your software and want to talk to you about it and test it and come up with new ideas, etc.  it makes it fun and motivating to keep working on a program.

i'm confused -- are you just asking the general question of how you specify what files get installed by Inno Setup? Or is there something i'm missing?
ps. try one of the Inno Ides, they make life easier.

« Last post by mouser on December 19, 2010, 10:17 PM »
Stephen pointed out in chat that actually some pages on DC are shown in Opera as not fully secure, and IE gives some warnings too on some pages.
It seems the problem is related to some pages referencing images explicitly by http://.  stay tuned it will be fixed.
