Website Baker is used by several DC people on their DC web spaces, and works well.

I remember being wowed sometime back in the 60s or 70s reading about a prototype aiming system for helicopter guns using some kind of helmet mounted sensors that tracked the pilot's eyeball.

are you sure you weren't remembering "Blue Thunder" :)

catch you later!

Also, I am not sure if I will do much in the way of advertising JottiQ. The way I see it, a good product/application will sell itself, especially so when it is free.

the unfortunate reality of this world is that you sometimes have to be the one to spread the word a little about your own software.  this is a program that deserves to be discovered by people so i think it's worth doing.  hopefully the nany event will get it some exposure, HOWEVER having a web page and a pad file for it would definitely help and be a step in the right direction.  let us know if you want some DC web space.

reassigning keys, not important for me, and i have no problem modifying settings.xml, so i will try that -- IF i could figure out where this thing installed its files :)

the f1 help sounds like a good idea.  making X quit and escape show help might also be a good idea.

also i think pgup and pgdn go back and forth pages, which is very good, but im not sure the help says that.

I have a challenge to everyone on the DonationCoder.com forum, and everyone who reads this, for the new year.

The challenge is simple: Donate something to someone who is creating content you like on the web.

This can be someone making music, art, software, whatever.  Just find someone who is asking for optional donations for their work, and send them some money.  If you can't afford to send any money, then at least send them an email, tell them how you appreciate their work.

I think it's way past overdue time for us to begin to shift our thinking from paying only when we are forced to, and expecting everything to be free (and financed through ads or scams, or whatever).

So find someone who creating content and making it available for free, and surprise and thrill them with a contribution and an email telling them to keep up the good work.

Hitting W key goes to window mode (but doesn't show any window menu this first time).
Hitting W twice more toggles full screen and window mode again and now i have a menu!

I think you also need some way to show some help even after user has loaded their first comic.
I read the introductory 2 pages, very nice and clear.
Then i loaded a comic, looked great.
Then i was totally completely lost as to the keyboard hotkeys that were shown to me on initial load, and could not figure out how to display help or do anything despite pounding all over the keyboard.

DCDisplay is very cool.
I have to say though personally that i find these website Deployment things with weird installers that put non-standard shortcuts and do weird things, totally baffling and frustrating.  Im not sure that is something you have an option with wrt XNA, etc.  but i find it ironic that once again Microsoft is pioneering ways to do f*cked up non-standard totally alien confusing things on their own operating system.

« Last post by mouser on January 01, 2011, 02:01 PM »
I have found the entires in this year's NANY to be particularly interesting, and the participants equally so.  It was very fun watching everyone who participated.

As usual i found it simultaneously stressful and rewarding to participate.  There is *NOTHING* like a deadline to focus the mind and force you to get stuff finished.  Often a deadline is the only thing that can turn an idea into a real product.

For those who didn't participate, or pledged and couldn't finish, don't let it get you down, but redouble your efforts to complete something in the coming year and get an early jump on NANY 2012.

Soon we will begin the process of sending out the amazing Cody NANY Mugs to all completing participants with Nudone's amazing artwork.. stay tuned!

Anyone got any links to some free CBR/CBZ format comics to try out with this?

UQ is really made for embedding quote boxes on your own web pages, but just as a quick and dirty sample you can view:

DC Quotes (layout is still wonky and needs improvement)
http://www.userquotes.com/uqpage?nid=4

And you can test the built-in feedback form functionality and let us know about new dc quotes/reviews/etc:
http://www.userquote...com/uqfeedback?nid=4

The feedback page not only makes it easy to submit feedback, but also submit found web page reviews.  All submissions are first approved by the group admins for the quote set.

Soon i will embed a quotes box with DC quotes on the main DC pages.  And then i can add some people to help manage the quotes through UQ to help us find and add more reviews and writeups, etc.

Anything submitted in the next 24 hours or so should be fine -- we dont have to be so strict :)

ps.
Because UserQuotes is in such rough beta state and not really ready for lots of users, i'd like to ask everyone not to spread the word or encourage new users until we get more of the kinks worked out!

I would be remiss if I didn't thank a few people for helping with UserQuotes.com:
  • First, JavaJones for the teamwork and all of the support and discussions about it and for partnering with me in it's development; i hope we will have more projects to collaborate on.
  • Second, to Gothic (John, the dc server admin) for doing a lot of work to get the server set up to run it and run some additional helper tools that had to be compiled and installed for it; not easy work and really appreciated.
  • DC member Krishean who solved a css/html problem with formatting that i felt like i was going to lose my mind over.

UserQuotes.com Web Service / UserQuotes.com: Post bug reports here
« Last post by mouser on January 01, 2011, 11:44 AM »
UserQuotes.com is still in such an early state that i think i would be overwhelmed if people emailed me bug reports directly at this stage.
Expect lots of problems, and please feel free to post bug reports in this thread, and JavaJones and I will try to address them as we move forward.

The UserQuotes.com web service is a project that I and DC member JavaJones developed together.

uqblock_thumb.png

The idea of the website is to let one or more people in a group manage a collection of quotes from users, links to online reviews, email testimonials, and feedback comments.

Many websites keep a collection of links to reviews, awards, email comments, etc. that praise their products.  Typically this list is created by hand and placed in a box on a website somewhere, with a heading something like "What people say about us"  or "Awards we have won."

But there are problems with maintaining such a list by hand and UserQuotes.com was designed to solve these problems:

  • Allows collective management of quotes/reviews/awards, so a *team* of people can add and manage items together.
  • Allows anonymous users to submit feedback form or add new items, but these items are not made public until the team appoves them; gives you control over what items are shown.
  • Site automatically fetches screenshot grabs of web pages (with reviews, etc.) and makes a thumbnail image of the web page (or directly of an award graphic).
  • In addition to reduced size thumbnails, the site will also grab a FULL image of the entire webpage and a text version of the webpage.  If the review page *ever* goes offline, users can still read the cached original.
  • Tags let you organize sets of quotes into logical groups and present them to users.  So a team can manager a collection of quotes about multiple projects, and you can choose different subsets of these to show on different pages.
  • You can embed random quote boxes in different styles and themes on your own site's pages.  Or just send people to the UserQuotes.com page to browse.

UserQuotes.com is currently in a *VERY* ROUGH BETA state.  Don't expect to be able to use this for your real projects yet.  Most features work well, but some final finishing touches are really in rough shape which will make it hard to actually deploy for real yet.  But we are working on it, so stay tuned.
