General Software Discussion / Re: What in the world is "Refactoring?"
« Last post by mouser on January 03, 2011, 05:00 PM »
it really depends on what kind of coder you are and how well you take to these new fangled IDE fancy tools.

if you're anything like me, it's too late for your brain to really make good use of them.  when my code needs to be improved i do it by hand or with dead simple search and replace stuff.  i've just never really learned to make use of refactoring tools and don't see myself doing so.

when an IDE says it has "Refactoring" tools, it means it has a bunch of separate small little ways it can help you refactor/modify your code, like worstje said.  these may range from simple things like renaming functions, adding arguements to functions, splitting up functions, etc.

whoever wrote that is trying too hard to make something sound complicated, kind of like people try to do when they are writing their resume and want to make their job sound important.

When people talk about "refactoring" their code, what they really mean is going back into the code and improving the way it is written (typically without adding functionality).

In other words, it's when you take the time to reorganize your code and use better data structures, and make it work better, and usually make the code cleaner and more stable.

It looks like we may finally have someone who is ready to volunteer to digitize 2xl tapes, so if you have some tapes that aren't yet in the 2xl simulator please contact me (send me a message via the forum or email to [email protected]) and i'll give you an address to send the tapes to.

Yeah i could definitely do completely without all the back story fake stuff and just have the review -- though i like the cursing and stuff in the review.

Just a quick update:

Thanks to Gothi[c] and XDebug, we have conclusively identified the problem with the slow posting, and it should be fixed now.

The first clue was what i did myself to improve it, which was remove some custom code that was emailing each new post for archiving.

The connection i dind't make is that when people subscribe for notifications on a thread, this also causes emails to be generated when some threads are posted on, which made posting on those threads slow.

I'll post again as soon as we have the emailing speeds fixed and things should be superfast then.

One more thing to add:

Make no mistake, this guy sees details and makes connections that i guarantee you missed.  He will find inconsistencies in the story and lore and SHOW YOU with clips where a previous scene in a previous movie contradicts something in a latter one.  His reviews of the star trek movies are much less epic and interesting, but it's incredibly impressive to see him pluck out really esoteric scenes from the long running tv series that contradict details in the movies.  Despite the tone and presentation, this guy has the attention to detail of a super fan/nerd, while at the same time ripping these things apart -- that's part of what makes sticking with the long review so rewarding.

nope thats fine.
what we will probably want to do though is get it uploaded to youtube so that it can show in a live box on the NANY summary page and people can just click play to watch it without leaving the page.

yeah -- actually if anyone who thinks they might be willing to do their own screencast (please do!!) just posts here or emails me or messages me to that effect, at least i can skip doing them initially -- that would save me some time.  i do think i need to have them all done by end of next week.

i should clarify: the best thing you could do is make your own screencasts.

BB Flashback Express is free and is an excellent choice but there are other tools too.

If you've already made a screencast of your NANY entry, we will use that as the official one

No one has volunteered to create the 30+ screencasts for the NANY entries, and claim a copy of the amazing Camtasia program for their troubles.

This is your last call to do so before i buckle down and do them.. It's a lot of work and you need to be proficient in doing them efficiently and quickly if you hope to survive with your sanity intact.. but if you are interested contact me asap.

OTHERWISE, assuming no one else volunteers, I will begin making them.

AND LASTLY: If you are a NANY 2011 coder, this is your chance to email me ([email protected]) or message me any details you want me to specifically highlight in my screencast of your program.  Because these are really quick and dirty screencasts, I often don't do justice to the entries, and have been known to totally miss the point and fail to recognize genius when i first see it (like i tragically did when not appreciating the wonderfulness of timns' Twigatelle game in last year's NANY).

UserQuotes.com Web Service / UserQuotes spin offs?
« Last post by mouser on January 02, 2011, 08:39 PM »
With so much work still to be done on UserQuotes, this is really premature, but..

Since the main thing that the UserQuotes service does is allows a GROUP of people to collect, maintain, and annotate a collection of references to web pages, complete with thumbnails and complete archives of the web page, we have wondered if people might any ideas for ways we could repurpose the code to serve other functions -- like a social/group bookmarking tool, etc?

looks like our forum pagerank which was 7 is gone completely now that we moved and simplified the forum urls from /forum/ to /forum/, even though we have a permanent redirect.  not sure if that's something to be concerned about or not..
