if you email me or upload the raw video files we will upload to the dc youtube account.
im not sure what choices you have for video output from flash/wink etc -- do you have choices other than swf? maybe flv or mp4 or avi?

# skwire says he will do his own
# timns says he will do his own
# kyrathaba says he will do his own

those are the only ones we are waiting for to go live with the final nany results.

i didnt lose focus when using Park Cursor Aside -- wraith are you sure you dont have a different utility running that is set to move the focus to the application under the cursor at all times?  that should be easy enough to check just by moving cursor to various windows and seeing if focus follows it.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: NetLaunch
« Last post by mouser on January 07, 2011, 10:14 AM »
Another question is how it decides whether the network is up or not.. With multiple network adapters it would seem like the way to do this is either to let user select the adapters/networks to test for up/down, OR test interenet connectivity in general.  Not sure what NetLaunch does..

Just got around to trying NetLaunch, i think it has some great possibilities..
I ran into a couple of issues:

  • 1. An occasional random crash -- i can provide details if you can't reproduce.
  • 2. An error message about not understanding what "DoNothing" action means.  Funny how computers have a hard time understanding "do nothing", i've never had a problem understanding that myself -- in fact i'm quite good at it.
  • 3. Both 1+2 may have to do with the fact that the "what to do" action should be a "Drop Down List" in windows control parlance, rather than a "Drop Down"; the difference being that the former only allows user to choose among those items listed, where the latter also allows user to type in random text.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Park Cursor Aside
« Last post by mouser on January 07, 2011, 09:10 AM »
this program opened my eyes to something very strange --

not using park cursor aside, just normal use, on my 2 computers running XP, it's almost impossible for me to get the bar cursor to NOT dissapear as soon as it even hovers over a text field(!)

i don't have the "hide cursor while typing" option checked in the mouse control panel, and i'm not sure where this option is being enabled, or whether it is even controllable.

i actually find this default windows behavior quite confusing and didn't realize it until i went to try Park Cursor utility and realized that my windows is doing something more extreme by default, and i don't know how to stop it.

it was only after testing, and then trying Park Cursor on a windows 7 machine that i realized this weird behavior isn't default on all windows machines..

any clues?

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Duplicate Photo Deleter
« Last post by mouser on January 07, 2011, 08:37 AM »
I watched an early test screencast that Wraith made and it went into some nice detail and examples that were cool. Wraith pointed out something that i thought was important.  He pointed out that if you select the same folder for both, and checked all items, it was possible to delete BOTH copies of a photo by accident.

I have a really simple solution suggestion:

Right before actually deleting, check that the original file partner of the pair still exists -- if not, skip the delete.

BB Flashback Express only records the initial state of the program
then you must be doing something wrong.

I have a Camtasia Studio license
no reason an older version won't work well.

General Software Discussion / Flash Sniper Game of the Week: Sierra 7
« Last post by mouser on January 06, 2011, 04:43 PM »
JayIsGames introduces us today to an outstanding and very polished sniper/shooter flash game called Sierra 7.  One of the better ones i've tried.

Gameplay is fairly realistic; aim for the head and you'll always take an enemy down as long as you're a decent shot, guns behave and load realistically, and not every enemy has magical scoping laser headshot vision when they fire at you. There's even a level where you're required to snipe certain targets from afar, taking into consideration factors like wind speed and direction. The fact that enemy locations are randomised each time you reload a level takes some of the sting out of having to replay a level when your checkpoint was a ways back.

Living Room / Re: What is a good desktop stapler?

one stapler is not enough.  you need two minimum, a normal desktop stapler, and then at least one or two big ones for more than a dozen or two dozen pages.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY MUGs
« Last post by mouser on January 06, 2011, 01:42 PM »
I used to order the mugs directly shipped to me and then send them out from my home.  It was a ton of extra work but i figured it has to be cheaper to order a bulk amount of mugs.

However with shipping prices in the US through the roof, it turns out to be cheaper (and a ton less work) to let CafePress drop ship them from china or wherever, individually to each person.

This is my way of saying that while you might think you can come up with a cheaper way to make and ship them by doing a lot of work, it might simply be the case that an online site like cafepress or whatever has just optimized things well enough that they do a cheaper job of sending things directly from the factory to different people.

As for a shirt, i think it's a great idea.. but something to consider.  If there are 30 entries in the NANY, it means we spend about $600 on mugs each year (about $20 each; often more because people who participate in NANY multiple years can ask for something more elaborate than a mug).  Even if you got the tshirts to half price including shipping, it's a lot of money.

HOWEVER, I think a really nice NANY shirt design would be fantastic, and might be something people would prefer over a mug, or might be willing to buy themselves at cost in addition to the mug.

So my advice is, don't worry about sending out free shirts -- instead concentrate all efforts on having a reallllllly cool new style NANY/CODY shirt made that people would LOVE to have..  Something really special.  Maybe it doesnt have to be NANY specific, but an awesome CODY DC shirt..  The plain white tshirts with a picture of cody just don't cut it.  We need something really modern and nice I think.  Then we can worry about how people get it later.

ps. the slide show is a really nice interface.. if you can get the questions showing for each photo at the top of the photo, you might actually make that the default view.

that zoom feature might be needed on a mobile device, but for a desktop reader, it's hard to see the value in it.

it might be nice to show in the status or result window when a file cache was used instead of having to upload the whole file.
could be interesting to user and also useful in explaining why a file was so fast to be scanned.

what should Ctrl+T do? should it show two pages side by side? here it just seems to toggle the zoom slightly between full page and almost full page, always showing one page.

cool.

i really think you have to do something about the way this program installs itself.  if you need to have it install instead of just running, there has to be some way to do it so that it actually installs and copies files to some permanent place in Program Files\ and runs properly from there.  as it is now it seems like it leaves the files where they are but makes some registration somewhere so that you can't move the files and can't run the setup program again without removing it from the Add/Remove list.  it's very confusing and i've never seen anything quite so confusing in an installer. not to be harsh but something is terribly wrong with the way this installs -- or else i'm very confused, or both.

one thing i would like is that the search box seems to only search for a string -- it would really be nice to be able to search for multiple words anywhere, for i could type: england, jazz to find entries that have the word england somewhere AND the word jazz somewhere.  obviously one could get more fancy but basic AND / OR would be nice.
