DC member Wordzilla is to be thanked for the awesome zillarank search that he custom coded for us -- it's a big step up from the built-in smf search.  and of course we have each other to thank for donating enough for us to run on a powerful server which is capable of performing fast full text searches on a big database.

if anything you should get a golden rainbow one -- nany would not happen if not for you!

ham is working on the badges now -- i vote for ONE small 16x16 badge showing the # of NANY's you've participated in, and then on your profile and on the badge listing page, it will show one for each year.  i can implement this easily and i think it will reduce clutter on the posts pages (like this one).

Why not have the game choose a random subsection of the total number of towers at the start of the level?

the nice thing about letting users contribute level designs is that its the USERS that balance and playtest levels to come up with interesting puzzles and challenges, rather than having the game try to figure out how to generate random diversity, etc.
14556
And lets not forget puzzle games. The Incredible Machine, Chu Chu Rocket, Lemmings, .

definitely

what about a puzzle game where on each level you have to solve the puzzle that will let cody collect all the coins without getting killed.

just to clarify -- i am not going to be adding any delay -- i was just mentioning that the principle of it didn't bother me.

as far as alientating potential donors, it absolutely will do that with some percentage of users and make them refuse to use it at all.

but then the exact same thing could be said (and is said and is true) about the license keys.

there is no perfect solution that makes everyone happy -- it just does not exist.  everything is a compromise if you are trying to find a way to raise money from your software without simply making it a pay-to-use product (and of course that brings with it it's own set of challenges).

having said that, i do tend to agree with cyberdiva that you are better off as an author in letting the user easily and safely use your software before bothering them.  so putting the delay in the installer is not a great start to their experience.

In what way(s) could people contribute to a tower defense game? Obviously coders could help program, artists could make graphics, and musicians could help with music or maybe sound effects, but in what other ways would someone be able to contribute to a TD game?

this is really important -- and what i was trying to get at in my post -- the game should support USER GENERATED CONTENT.

the easiest way would be if users could create and submit custom levels, either using a level editor or a simple data file format.

sorry just saw this now.  although i am not an outlook user, during my screencast it seems reallly clear to me that on the very very top of your todo list should be a nice confirmation that the item was actually added, and some handling of the case when outlook was not running.  i would absolutely do that before anything else, or you could get some irate users who thought they added things that never get added.
14560
yeah i have to say, i think having to wait 30 seconds doesn't seem like an unreasonable thing.  it's a bit similar to the DC approach to license keys.  i do not like these bundled toolbars and wouldn't include them with my apps, but i can imagine putting a 30second delay in an installer for non-donators and asking people to consider donating.

it's not your code, it's your starting formula:

s = -5t2 + 20t

this is not correct.  at least not in our universe.

if s = -5t2 + 20t this is same as saying s = 10t, which is actually what your program shows, and is clearly not a formula of much value :)

it's probably supposed to be t^2 not t*2.

I got my start coding because i wanted to code games to play, a lot of people did.

It's just deplorable that DC doesnt have a serious inhouse developed game that people on the site can extend and contribute to by creating levels, etc.

Can't someone at DC start some kind of game coding project that the rest of us can contribute to, by creating levels or missions or adding code?  Something that captures the fun and humor spirit of DC?

not feasible since ive super customized the a dc theme and everything would break if users switched away from it (donationcredits, etc).

now theoretically i could post the dc theme and let others customize that to make an official new dc theme alternative.. BUT.. that would make 2 themes that need updating every time something changes, which i'm not fond of..

DC Website Help and Extras / character set issue problem on new server
« Last post by mouser on January 17, 2011, 08:19 PM »
that's something completely different.. let's not confuse the thread.  there is a character set issue with the new forum install -- let's discuss that on a new thread in this section.  i've been looking for some examples to help debug it, maybe you have found on.  let's start a new thread for htis -- splitting off your topic now.

i think i know what may have happened.. perhaps.

you know you are a MOD on that forum, which means you can MODIFY other people's posts.

i think you may have modified someones post thinking you were replying to it.

when you do that, you dont change the poster name, you will just end up with a line at bottom "modified by..."

the reason im pretty sure thats what happened is i can see that you did it :)
well at least i think i can.

i see you modified a post by joiwind and turned it into a reply to his post.

i've actually done this myself once or twice, thinking i was replying but i was really modifying.

some people just aren't ready for mod powers
