now im REALLY confused.  wtf happened in that chart -- i don't understand at all what happened.  help?
14502
By the way search results in google are not affected by pagerank.

right, which is google's little joke -- and the punchline is:

google has it's own trustrank (internal and not published)

whatever -- i need to not think about these things -- it just makes me angry if i do.  google does whatever the hell they want and we should just get used to it and take it and keep quiet.
14503
Month later after the server move, the forum is still pagerank 0 and homepage down to 5.

Oh well, I guess one cannot expect to understand the ways of the almighty google -- best thing is just get used to the new position in the caste system of the internet.

Addendum: looks like the forum in Janurary has done about HALF the normal traffic for a month -- i have no idea if that's because of google, but it seems pretty clear that the server move caused a huge loss of traffic.

Maybe it will solve itself eventually.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Dock positioning/resizing by external programs
« Last post by mouser on January 25, 2011, 12:24 AM »
What you might want to try instead is using the hotkey method for showing an LBC menu under the cursor, instead of having it docked to the side of the screen.
That is the solution that some people use who dont like having to move the cursor to the edge of the screen, etc.

that is a very interesting idea..

it sort of ties in with an idea of adding a feature to LBC that would track the current program and show some subsection of the dock configured specifically for it.

but i'm just not 100% sure how well this idea of a custom sized launchbar attached to the current window would be..

let me ask a question -- if i did add a feature to let you set the dock poition and size, would that really be useful? what happens when users drags the other window around on screen and LBC does not follow it?

i will try to add right-click, i should be able to.

however, if i fail, then i can certainly simulate it when you hold control and click.

« Last post by mouser on January 24, 2011, 10:02 PM »
rules for nany have always allowed complete REWRITES, and perhaps major new version which are more than 50% new code, as allowable nany, but not simple updates.

March is our anniversary month, and this year we DO need to have a new fundraiser (last one was 2 years ago); doing this yearly would also make sense.

But it doesnt make sense to have a programming event then i don't think.. Though i guess encouraging UPDATES to existing apps for march could make some sense.

Would it really change any of the end-of-the-year NANY stuff?  People would still participate in the final push for NANY apps, etc.
14510
its almost certainly a plugin problem.
delete any plugins (they wont be uninstalled autoamtically when you uninstall)(.

also you can delete the FindAndRunRobot.ini file to reset all settings.

Living Room / Re: Do universities have a claim on students' IP?
« Last post by mouser on January 24, 2011, 08:26 PM »
There are situations in a University where a graduate student is EMPLOYED by the university or is paid on a grant; in those cases it seems reasonable for some of the conditions of that employment to be that any intellectual property coming out of that work is (partially) owned by the university.

But I agree with those who have described the role of a normal student attending university in terms of the university being HIRED BY THE STUDENT to provide a service (education).  In such a case, when students create something as part of a class, they should have complete rights to that.

yeah one of the serious discussions we've had about NANY is:

Should NANY encompass any NEW apps made during the previous year.

It is somewhat illogical to think that someone who has released 10 coding snacks over the course of the year might not enter NANY just because their programs were released a month earlier as a NANY.

So one proposed change would be to say that NANY celebrates new applications released in the past year, regardless of when.

it has to be a commandline utility because he's going to launch it from another program when it needs to be run.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: How to stop backups
« Last post by mouser on January 24, 2011, 01:16 PM »
Works fine on 64 bit, using it here.

As for reducing the backups:
  • Go to configuration, then choose top root node labeled "Options"
  • Then uncheck the option to backup data files when upgrading, and change the backup filesnames to the ".bak" option.
  • Then Save.

i wonder if the solution to this might be to have a mid-year event celebrating the UPDATING of our apps?

Very small bites first. Nibble first. Munch second. Feast last.

very wise words.

but:

Why not build puzzles first, then later do a game with the puzzles in it

i don't get it -- what would this mean?
14519
What about a 2d platformer puzzle game that is sort of like the "incredible machine", except it works like this:

  • On each level Cody the bird starts out somewhere, and on the level is one (or more?) gold coins he has to collect, as well as an exit.
  • Cody is not under your control.. he has behaviors that are governed by what he encounters and sees.
  • Your job is to place things on the level that will help him get to his coin and then exit.

His basic behavior will be as follows:
  • If he can see a coin, he will try to head directly for it.
  • If he has a coin and sees an exit, he will head for the exit.

A level may be filled with many obstacles and dangers for Cody.. Your job will be to manipulate the level and objects in it so that he has a SAFE route to coin and then exit.  This may involve setting breadcrumbs for him, or figuring out ways to indirectly guide him from making bad decisions.

I think it sounds fun.. BUT it also sounds nearly impossible to design..

A simpler idea might be better at first.

General Software Discussion / Re: Simple Commandline to send Keystrokes
« Last post by mouser on January 23, 2011, 07:04 PM »
so just to refine your request,

what you are looking for is a commandline tool that can send arbitrary keys (like right arrow, pageup, etc.) to the last active window, or optionally to a window specified by title/class/applicationexefilename.
14521
I worry about as well, and i'll bet it happens a lot.
I think the only safe thing is to not search for a domain unless you are prepared to buy it on the spot if you want it.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Post Capture Commandine Key Press?
« Last post by mouser on January 23, 2011, 06:17 PM »
you actually can do that now with the current version, but it will require a little experimenting.

In the Post-Capture Options,
there is a checkbox "Invoke these command lines after each capture"
you can check this, and then put in a command to run a commandline tool that will send a keystroke to the active (or a specific) window.

So then your next step is to find a simple commandline that can send keystrokes -- they exist and are free, but i don't know any off hand.
If you post in the general software thread someone can probably recommend one.

So far it's looking like Gothi[c] and I may have identified and remedied the problem:

Looking through that access logs (shout out to my Web Log Filter utility for making it a little easier), it seems like the server slowdown may have been caused by a web spider from russia making huge numbers of calls to the search function, which puts pretty heavy demands on the cpu and memory.

In fairness, the fault may have been mostly ours -- when we moved servers, we changed the forum urls from /Forum/bb to the simpler /forum but we didn't update the robots.txt file which tells robot spiders not to try to spider things like the search page.  It's *possible* that this is why the spider was trying to do such massive spidering of search result pages.

This is our working hypothesis -- and we will reopen the search functionality to the public on monday.
