For a source to check ratings? I would say none really exist, best way to check 'ratings' is forum sites like DC not a place where people click on stars.
In general I use softpedia, freeware-guide and freewarefiles for new releases.

People allow themselves to be part of the system that is "open" to going in debt and therefore lose wealth when a greater part of your pie has to go to paying interest. Actually the rich often pay with money they don't really have too, it is borrowed and carries interest, but they can afford it. How did they accumulate wealth? The system and the policies are set up to encourage wealth in fewer hands (AT&T buys the other guy, etc.) and this is only (relatively) rarely disallowed by anti-monopoly regulations.
I think if you superimpose those income disparity graphs over a 'number of government regulations' graph you will see the relationship between the two.

Society doesn't reward hard work, in the realm of bits and bytes it is no different. I wouldn't be happy if a freeware I use goes shareware either and I would prefer it to be shareware from the start so I know where I stand today and next year.
When something is deserving of support eventually something is possible but not in a business model sense - example, I paid for a pro version of a software but never upgraded to the pro and continue to use the free version I had already installed.
Ratings should be taken with a grain of salt anyway, I came across that on a recent hardware purchase, there isn't a single router that has consistently good ratings.

Without reading the whole article, the first sentence sums it up for me. I came to this realization years ago with regards to free software. I really do not think it is a sustainable business model.

This can't exist, by definition. Just because examples of "successful" free software are out there doesn't prove that such a thing is even possible, those examples are luck or whatever not successful businesses. I think software authors should understand - and surely they do because they are the techy types - that we live in an age where people want free movies, music etc.

If you write freeware you go in knowing that you are not doing business, whatever comes in (donations, etc.) are happy bonuses.

EDIT: I want to add that the quality of the software is not even important, because quality is in the eye of the user, 1000s of software on softpedia, sourceforge and elsewhere that do the job well but have 100 downloads in their lifetime

I think a widely used theme like Suffusion can mimic most if not all of the requirements with little or no coding. Thematic framework can do the same with some coding.

Especially in the case of multimedia this and that, there are way too many convertors, etc.

Back to Tree Projects - "gathering and centralizing files and notes" seems to be strong there.  Right now, you throw various stuff on the disk and look for it with Total Commander or Everything. Or a drill down navigation system where you keep your "stuff".  Maybe TreeProjects is one of the best repositories for finding and jumping back and forth ?  (Linkman is possible too, but I have not used it much this way, and it would not be as strong with combining notes.)  Is Tree Projects significantly stronger than RightNote here ?  Is this helpful enough to fulcrumize the purchase ?

The Tree Projects discount is not "must-jump" and we can ask him for a similar DC special, even for a short period, I really would like to try it out a bit.  I think at times he modularized the date entry.. step by step .. a bit too much .. so you have to hit enter or click ok and go to the next step.  I find that a bit unusual.  That was my main kvetch in my light usage.

Steven

As it grows it, hopefully, can index more file types than now so I think TreeProjects goes a long way to organize, tag...and search. I have very little of experience with Rightnote (based on DC recommendations that should change) but I can say that TreeProjects has lasted as my 'info app' longer than most. You make good points about clicks though.
I wouldn't be surprised if the developer (Yaroslav) is receptive to limited deals or discounts for DC, I can write and ask him. I have been in contact with him with questions.

@rjbull, you are right, at times I have thought about abandoning the continued search for PIMs and settling on one, never lasts though

My use is gathering and centralizing files and notes, I use the 'Enable special folder monitoring' and throw in pdf, txt and image files.
The 'manual' note taking part is the other part in which I either type in directly or use the clipboard capture (Ctrl+Alt+Ins or Ctrl+Alt+V).
I have several web pages saved too, it works well though it's not the fastest when you want to view the pages later and there is no editing after web page capture which I would like and seems to be on the roadmap.
The reminder feature can act as PIM alarm but it's not exactly a complete calendar app so I am not really using that feature.

The issue is fixed after running NoteMe /resetsettings. The email address to send to prompt comes up and NoteMe works

On a XP 32bit, it creates a folder in application data even though when install is being completed it says it can't create the folder. Then the initial size in ini file is 120x122, too small.

Who are these people in the patent office? supposedly following some law that allows these stuff? If decisions can be patented this is even more hilarious than usual. It's like saying the thermostat switching off when it's 70F can be patented

Living Room / List your (wireless) router and experiences
« Last post by rgdot on December 19, 2011, 06:16 PM »
In the market for a solid not too expensive router, the trusty old WRT54G is showing signs of the end, as with all DSL and connectivity issue it is very difficult to find culprits but I may, big may, have isolated it this time. There are 1000s of reviews online and except for the most expensive there is very little consensus. Would be cool if everybody reading list some experiences they have had.

My requirements are minimal by most standards, no gaming, almost never torrents even. Connect three computers and just browse mostly.

I suppose I could find another WRT54G but other experiences would be cool. Perhaps DD-WRT (and the like) ready would be nice too but I am not too bothered with it if it is a solid router.
