does money count?

;D The main point of the fundraiser is to ask for monetary donations from people.  It's a time when we gather up our nerves and try to make the case that people should part with some of their hard earned cash to support us.  So yes, financial donations are very welcome.

The activities we are asking for pledges for in this thread are to try to do things that will make people realize and take notice that DonationCoder is worth supporting if they are still on the fence.

I wasn't talking about DC specifically, I was just talking about the general concept.  It goes without saying that every website that has user accounts has a deep obligation to protect those accounts, protect the site against attackers, etc.

Living Room / Re: Can anybody recommend a free XML to PDF or RTF converter?
« Last post by mouser on February 15, 2011, 07:17 PM »
It looks like at first glance that that tool will require some serious configuration to convert an xml file to a nice output.

Sure would be nice to have something automated that maybe could read an xml file and make some reasonable assumptions in order to generate a nice looking layout.. or maybe use a kind of gui tool to let you configure the arrangements of fields for pretty printing..

It's interesting that everyone seems to have come to a different conclusion than the one I seem to have reached.

I guess in my mind i judge the real-world risk and inconvenience of having users create and remember custom passwords for a site seems to be significantly worse than the risks associated with just generating and emailing them a random one.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the worst case scenario when you mail them a random password is that someone will get access to their mail and get their login info for the site, and will be able to log into the site as them.  The worst case scenario when letting users choose passwords is that they will have reused that password on other sites (bound to happen some of the time), and open themselves up to having someone be able to log in as them on lots of other sites if even one of their site credentials leaks out.

If users were perfectly behaved, then yes having them create their own strong unique passwords is a clear win.  I'm just thinking in the real world it still seems to me that autogenerating a random password and emailing it is a win, for all but high security sites where the risk of email leakage is just too high to chance that.

One clarification -- Coding Snacks are usually done on request from the Coding Snack Requests section of our forum.  One thing we can do if we have enough pledges is really encourage new visitors to post new requests.  BUT also I want to say that a Coding Snack does not strictly have to be based on a public request.  It can just be a small idea that a programmer here wants to implement and release.

Better duplicate handling
i hope to have this done in a release in the next week or so.
14310
For coding snack (small program) pledges: 11 down, 20 to go.
For mini-reviews: 1 down and 30 to go.

As for dates -- This is really important -- We will have to have deadline dates, and everyone should expect their first deadline will be the first week of march.

That's because a key part of this idea is to release ONE PER DAY.  So if we are going to be releasing one per day and keeping to a strict schedule, there is little room for error.
14311
If we can find other people to get us up to one per day, I am willing to pledge to release 5 small coding snack utilities in March.  That would leave 26 more we'd have to find coders to create.  If we can't get enough pledges to do it that's ok -- please do NOT pledge less than you can confidently accomplish spread throughout the month (we can't have them all arriving on last day of the month -- they have to come one per day!).

Countdown to the 2011 Fundraiser: [countdown=3,1,2011,7,0,Starts in ,.]Has Begun![/countdown]

On this thread I think I was asked to start a new thread where people can pledge to do something for the March 2011 fundraiser.

The idea is to have a bunch of special things happening in March that will bring some attention to the site and encourage long time members and new members alike to make a donation to the site.

From this standpoint, I think some of the more useful things we could are things that we do one-per-day for the entire month; things that show off what is special about the site.

So for me I think at the top of the list would be Coding Snacks (software) and Mini-Reviews.

If we could find enough people to pledge to write a coding snack or a mini-review, it would be nice to be able to announce that we will have one new coding snack and one new mini-review of a software program per day.  But I'm not sure that's realistic...  And it's very important that we not commit to something we can't pull off..

So I think the question or this thread is.. what are you willing to (comfortably) pledge to do in the month of march for our fundraiser?

All's well that ends well, glad to hear it's working for you now
14314
Is there somewhere that we can start pledging?

Should we start a new thread for "pledging" ? What are we asking people to pledge? To do "something" for the fundraiser? Or do we want to be more specific about things to pledge for?

App I think you missed that this was a joke -- the joke was the idea that the ipad would get heavier the more books you add.  :P

I guess my thought was that 98% of users would *not* change their passwords, but perhaps the 2% hardcore users who are security conscious would want to be able to..

Living Room / Re: Micro Reviews of Board Games - Crack the Case
« Last post by mouser on February 15, 2011, 09:24 AM »
It's been a while since I posted one of my non-competitive board game mini-reviews, so here goes.

This is a mini-review of: Crack the Case
pic250487_md.jpg

Crack the Case is kind of a party game for amateur sleuths.  The game comes with a ton of large cards which have two sides.  On one side is a short "mystery" you read to the rest of the group.  On the other side is the solution to the case that the reader keeps private. Then the rest of the group just asks questions of the reader that can only be answered by words like: YES/NO/MAYBE/IRRELEVANT/CLARIFY QUESTION.

That's basically the whole game.  Keep in mind that this isn't a game where you uncover clues and figure out some deep mystery -- the game is really about trying to come up with QUESTIONS that will help reveal the answer to the case (like trying to figure out how and why person X killed person Y).

We had quite a bit of fun playing it and liked the fact that it required no setup, and everyone could just sit where they want and shout out questions and all play at the same time.

Some "cases" were more enjoyable than others, but each case only takes 10-15 minutes to play and every one that we played involved moments where we were pleasantly perplexed and searching for the right question to ask to "crack" the case -- and eventually solved each one.

A big thumbs up for this one -- especially when playing with groups that don't like too much structure, want to jump right into something -- and it's also one where there is no pressure on anyone to come up with ideas, etc.  Since it's basically just a free for all of shouting out questions.

Final Rating: 8 out of 10.

I'm not sure exactly where to look but I'd be interested in reading anything about the pros and cons, or hearing people's opinions on the issue of whether a website should ASSIGN users a password (by email) when they sign up, vs having the use type one in themselves.

I've seen both on the web.  Forums tend to almost exclusively be set up to have user choose their password.

I see some serious pros and cons:

When user chooses their own password:
  • The main advantage seems to me that you never have to transmit by email their password, which means little risk of it being discovered by someone malicious through email sniffing, etc. (not sure how much this happens in real life as opposed to a theoretical risk)
  • And a minor advantage is user can pick one they can remember.

But the advantages to emailing them a generated password seem very substantial:
  • Site can insure that every user has a strong password -- this eliminates the very real world attacks where people's passwords are guessed because they are too simple.
  • While you can write code to insist on strong passwords, you cant stop the very real and most dangerous kind of real world attack, which is where people use the same login and password on multiple sites.  This is one of the most serious ways that security is breached in the real world and we've talked about it in the past on the forum.
  • Users dont have to come up with passwords and remember them -- so registration is simpler, less error prone, and they have their password mailed to them which means they can always find it later if they forget it (another real world problem that happens frequently).

So you might have guessed that i'm starting to learn towards the idea that the risks/benefits favor having a site automatically generate and email a password to a user at signup, rather than asking them to enter one manually during registration.  It seems to me that if you allow them to optionally change their password once they log in, that might be the best compromise and give people who are concerned about email sniffing an option.

Thoughts?

Find And Run Robot / Re: Creating a shortcut to a URL

clever.

Only thing that I've noticed is that if I name an alias with two or more words - FARR won't open it.

yes i suppose aliases have to be one whole word -- or i think multiple alternative words with comas?

Seems like a good idea although as Renegade points out there is going to be some strong incentive to abuse it (and will it be impossible to get a straight answer from google if people are using it against you?)

There is also something unpleasantly ironic about the idea that google is going to start telling people that the way to get the best results from their search engine is to use their google branded browser in order to get rid of the junk in the google search engine..

Welcome to the site iota!  Glad you are liking FARR.

Ok so this is easy enough to do but i must say up front that FARR could use a little wizard to make these things easier.

There are a ton of FARR videos by the way that show how to do all sorts of things; you can find them: here.

But to be brief, in FARR any time you want to create a custom thing you can type that does something means you are working with "Aliases/Groups".

So:
  • Open up options and switch to the Aliases/Groups tab.
  • Choose myaliases.alias from the drop down in order to select the alias file where your own custom ones go.
  • Right click in the list and say "Add new entry"
  • For the "Alias Trigger Text" specify the next you want to match on, like: customer logs
  • Then in the Resuts list put your urls (including the http) or any other file location, etc.; you can put multiple items in here.
  • Leave the rest set to defaults.
  • Click Ok and then close options, you are done.

Let me know if it works.

ps1.
At some point I need to make a little wizard to guide people through creating basic aliases from within the program.  It's not that it's hard but it should be easier to do without looking up help file, etc.

ps2.
If you are creating an alias to a file (not a url) there is actually an easier way -- which is to first find the file using normal FARR searching in normal window, and then right-click on the file and then choose "Add to group alias".

The format should be used for NEW screenshots.. can you let me know if the problem you are having is that even with new screenshots it is ignoring this setting? I've never heard of that problem before.

But if it's only existing screenshots or files that you are talking about -- SC won't change the file format of an existing file automatically -- you have to do that explicitly, which you can do by specifying a file extension in the quick filename box and hitting enter.
