General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for iTunes alternative (WMP? or other?)
« Last post by Curt on January 27, 2014, 02:59 AM »
Does she use a portable (laptop) or a stationary (desktop)? My advice would not suite the portable solution.

I have moved the extensive (100k+ tracks) music collection out of the system folder, and over to an external 2TB USB "F" drive. In the "C" drive's Music system folder I only have the approx 650 tracks that are on my favourite play lists, and this is then all WMP will scan. That is impossible to detect; no freezing what so ever.

I have amplified WMP with (freeware) Windows Media Player Plus! (last updated May 19, 2013) because of the useful features it will add: http://bmproductions....fixnum.org/wmpplus/ But if she never modifies her setup, this might not be for her, as we know Windows' default reaction always is to blame the extras, eh... extensions, if a problem has occurred.

When the job not is big, I think WMP is the better solution.

PhotoUpz is on Bits du Jour again, and again for merely $8.
I think this program is the best of the kind.
http://www.bitsdujou...om/software/photoupz
I still think PhotoUpz may be the best of the kind for the money.

same same http://www.bitsdujou...om/software/photoupz normally $20, today $8

wrong name, wrong look, wrong price, almost everything is wrong

The result from WinDir Stat is of course a lot fancier to look at, but other than that, I don't rate..., because I've paid good money for a license key to Key Metric Folder Sizes Pro, so I use that one, whether it's the better one or not!

Found Deals and Discounts / Folder Size (freeware) now at version 3
« Last post by Curt on January 24, 2014, 02:20 AM »
Maybe this post belongs to the "normal" >General Software Discussion< thread. I am however placing it here because the new version 3 of Folder Size from MindGems (still) is both freeware and a (much simpler but otherwise) fine competitor to the $27.50 / $55 Folder Sizes 6 from Key Metric:

Low On Disk Space? Freeware Folder Size 3 is Released With FULL UNICODE Support
-MindGems
FolderSizeUnicode.gif
Folder Size version 3.0.0.0 is released – a major version packed with plenty of new features and improvements:

Unicode ( Multi-language ) Folder Size Analysis

Folder Size 2 did already scan files in multiple languages, but it could scan files in no more than 2 Languages at the same time. The second language had to be set as a language for non-unicode applications in the settings panel of Windows. This is no longer necessary and Folder Size 3 can scan files in any language at the same time.

Doesn't "Power On: 147 Days" tell that you haven't allowed Windows to update for about 5 months? Maybe you simply need to close Windows, (and start it again), for the updates to install, so your Windows Update can rest?

if nothing is wrong it would most likely be 1) Windows indexing, or 2) your security program scanning.

Found Deals and Discounts / Free WinX DVD Copy Pro

and again now, but this time via gizmo:
"Free DVD Copier Offer Exclusive For Gizmo's Readers"

http://www.techsuppo...e-gizmos-readers.htm

Note that you need to activate the software before January 24th. 2014.

Modified:
The software is stamped "XMAS", and is of course without any updating.

However, I came back here to point out that the offer which one is given when registering this giveaway, is really not the best offer they can give. The register-offer package is for DVD Ripper, DVD Copier, and eh... one more, for a total of $50. This sounds okay, because the normal price is said to be $159. However, the exact same combo is on offer via their front page for $40!

Anyway - their software is okay.

My favorite is Microsoft's ImageCollage. (this isn't a normal Microsoft product, it's put out -- and not really maintained -- by Microsoft Labs).

http://www.flickr.co.../curt-dk/3884282440/ was made (by me) using Microsoft Image Collage 2008 (on XP or Vista). MS said version 2009 wouldn't run on my Vista, and (I don't think I remember) when I finally got a Win 7, I could not find my license key. It is of course merely $20, but I didn't want to pay for products that never are updated. Does it work on 64-bits Win 7 or 8?

General Software Discussion / Re: Cobian Backup

Breaking news: Cobian Backup Source Code is now for sale.
Read more here.
Cobian Backup 11 (Gravity) Last modified: 07. March 2013
Features

Cobian Backup is a multi-threaded program that can be used to schedule and backup your files and directories from their original location to other directories/drives in the same computer or other computer in your network. FTP backup is also supported in both directions (download and upload).

Cobian Backup exists in two different versions: application and service. The program uses very few resources and can be running on the background on your system, checking your backup schedule and executing your backups when necessary.

Cobian Backup is not an usual backup application: it only copies your files and folders in original or compressed mode to other destination, creating a security copy as a result. So Cobian Backup can be better described as a "Scheduler for security copies". Cobian Backup supports several methods of compression and strong encryption.

I use two, none of them free. One is the $40 Shape Collage Pro, but I am not sure if it still is being maintained! The other is the often updated (but marginal simpler) Pearl Mountain $40 Picture Collage Maker Pro. The latter is a also a little easier to use. Pearl Mountain also has a $30 "standard" version, but I know nothing about it.

Have you decided if the pictures must be "artistic" arranged - opposed to arranged in straight angels? If straight angels are okay, use the free photo editor PhotoScape (to "combine")!
