there was a period where i envisioned CHS as being useful as a notetaking application -- you'll even find some old discussion about this on the forum if you look hard enough.  but i think i've let go of that idea.  while there is some real overlap as you say, the user interface needs are just so different that i now think that trying to combine the tools wouldn't work well.
14027
i think this is a great idea -- though i'm actually not so concerned with promoting DC -- but i can see the real value of having a recognizable page with cody on it that tells people that the author is a member of DonationCoder and encourages them to DONATE TO THE AUTHOR.  Encouraging them to visit the site is nice too, but i love the idea of spreading the recognizability of software that people should donate for.

Combine it with a sample simple license text that outlines free-for-personal use, permission for commercial use, and it would be really useful.

I hear ya -- sounds like at the minimum, we need to keep a lean and mean version of dcuhelper that doesnt include any new options.  But that doesn't mean we couldn't build a version of dcuhelper that does a little bit more and is just a drop in replacement.

Official Announcements / Fundraiser Day 10
« Last post by mouser on March 10, 2011, 11:56 AM »
Fundraiser Day 10.  We are about a third of the way through the month, and just about to pass the $9,000 mark with 350 people donating so far.  Thank you to everyone who has donated!

We are trying to release something new (software, update, howto, review) each day during the fundraiser.

Today DC member Nod5 wrote up a little howto explaining how you can use your Android phone to remotely control arbitrary scripts on your desktop pc -- including a sample autohotkey script that you could customize to do just about anything.  I can see this being something a few of you might enjoy experimenting with -- and Nod5 would probably be willing to provide some guidance for those of you new to autohotkey.

And, DC member timns brings us a fun new utility, a random password generator with some fun options: timns Friendly Password Generator:

See you tomorrow!

Welcome hanzo -- and thank you for the well expressed thoughts.  Launchy is an excellent program, no disagreement from me!

I'll check into the issue with chooding to NOT clear the search text -- this is one of those features that i don't use (and find hard to imagine why one would!) and so it may have gotten messed up recently with some other change.

One feature you may not know about which i find much more useful, is ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down with cycle you through your paste searches.  You could also type: historys to see a history of your past searches (or historyl for history of past launches).

If you edit the file configdir.ini and put as the first line: PORTABLE=TRUE
That should turn off any storage of anything outside the directory of FARR.

Thanks jgp! I've added it to the fundraiser blog along with some encouragement for people to make requests.

Official Announcements / Fundraiser Day 9
« Last post by mouser on March 09, 2011, 02:16 PM »
Day 9 of the fundraiser -- and we've broken the lucky $8,000 mark.  Thank you to everyone who has donated so far.

Today's release is a classic example of the Coding Snacks requests on our forum -- someone posted a request for a custom little utility yesterday, and a DC member (jgpaiva) has coded it and released it the next day as a donationware/freeware app with source code.

You can see the request here, and then read about and download the finished utility (KaosGen) here.

Coding Snacks are usually pretty small requests, although some occasionally can get pretty big and substantial.  They are always handled on a purely voluntary basis and anyone can post requests.  Since we still have a ton of days left in the fundraiser month, this would be the perfect time for you to post a new request -- you don't have to be a member of the site -- it's open to everyone.

Post your new request on the Coding Snacks section of the forum: here.

I also wrote a post about what DonationCoder would do with a two million dollar donation -- in case we have any billionaires out there who were feeling like we weren't speaking to them.

New users won't have that problem -- i apologize for not doing a smoother path for upgraders.. Perhaps in a month or so after i get everything else added that i want to i can put in some code to make the upgrade changes automatic.
14035
Ordering: doesn't seem to matter how I order clips in the main window, I can't change the order they display in the popup.
Set some values for Ordering field on some clips (anything > 0 will bring a clip higher to top then clips with no Ordering value), and then most importantly, make sure you edit the QuickPaste group as shown on the very first post in this thread.

very nice

I was talking about the check for update thing, if it was to replace DC updater helper, it'd be really simple to integrate with GridMove.

ah yes, well the idea was to build these features INTO dcuhelper so yeah that would be a seamless move -- perhaps I should focus on adding some of these proposed options to enhance the update helper to support some of these update-related ideas and leave aside the issue of license keys for the time being.
14038
I'm afraid i'm one of those people that needs to cogitate and chew on ideas for quite a while before i am ready to pull the trigger.. i can see why it might be annoying but sometimes it takes me some time and discussion before i can really see whether a change is needed and in what direction.
14039
If you want I can show you how to use the license key dll.. Maybe you can code some generic ahk helper functions for interfacing with it.  Let me build a new version of it.  But maybe the big first question is whether we should stick with the license key approach.. or maybe use it only during update checking..
14040
I think it's a good idea except the part about hiring an IP lawyer.. I think it should be sufficient for someone to try to find a good license already in existence (should be one), or at least one that requires little modification with no risk.
14041
This is a post that all Billionaires should read carefully.  The rest of you can skip it.

I thought it would be fun to imagine what we would do with a single 2 million dollar donation/grant, just for the hell of it.  It's not something serious, just a thought experiment, and in case any long time DC member wins the lottery and hits their head hard on the same day.

Ok so what would we do with a Two Million Dollar (after taxes please) donation?

  • I propose we create a Programming Co-operative living space.
  • Purchase a multi-unit apartment building in town of donor's choice, with a bottom floor zoned for commercial use.  We could aim for something 10 residential units in the building maybe.  Fixer upper is fine and preferred and I'm happy to do the work fixing it up with volunteers.
  • The residential units will be provided as rotating medium-term free living spaces for programmers who are willing to spend most of their time working on free/opensource/donationware software, and on teaching programming.
  • The bottom space should be used as an open community programming/hacker space where nerds can come to hang out, write software, work on experimental computer projects (art exhibits, etc.), help tutor people in programming, and play and invent board games.
  • The building will be DC headquarters and open at all hours to visitors and to provide assistance to learning coders; it will be an official non-profit and raise money to pay for ongoing expenses.
  • On the front of the building will be a bronze bust of the donor holding Cody the mascot in his hands.

Any ideas to add?

could a plug-in be added to CHS that if it sees it is an image, send it to SC?

One of the things that i could do is let users tell CHS how and where clipboard images should be stored.

So you could tell CHS, when it detects image data on the clipboard, save it to a file named C:\ScreenshotCaptor\Screenshots\Chs\DATE_TIME.extension
or C:\ScreenshotCaptor\Screenshots\YEAR\MONTH\TIME.extension
etc.
14043
Here's what I was looking for:
GridMove is free for personal use, but for use in a commercial environment, the author must be contacted.

Let me know what you find and decide to go with -- this is basically how I do my apps and i also don't have a formal license text beyond that.
(I also tell commercial users with less than 5-10 pcs to just view it as a personal use).
14044
Ok I see there is definitely some confusion here about the nature of image features i am proposing adding to CHS.

I am open to all kinds of ideas, but let me clarify more what *I* envision.

Here's what I don't propose:
  • I don't propose to make CHS a tool for managing and browsing images like good image managers, databases do.
  • I don't propose to give CHS good features for taking snapshots like Screenshot Captor.

My idea was in line with how i understand most Clipboard tools that work with images do.

That is, simply watch the clipboard for when image data is put on the clipboard -- for example when you select a region in photoshop (or Screenshot Captor or whatever), and copy it to the clipboard.

The idea is that when this happens, when you select an image in any program and hit Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard, CHS would save this temporary clipboard image in a local file and record a clip entry for it.

This clip entry would show up in your clipboard history just like the text entries do now.  You will be able to preview it in the grid view, or paste it back into another program using the quick paste menu, just like a test clip.

In other words, images would be handled in just the way text clips are handled now.
14045
Let's remember, this won't be a screenshoting tool, and it won't be a very useful general image database.. this is much more of a dumb image clipboard history feature.  It's primary feature will be to provide access to, and backup for, images you put on the clipboard in the recent past.

Official Announcements / Fundraiser Day 8
« Last post by mouser on March 08, 2011, 01:23 PM »
It's day 8 of the fundraiser, and we're soldiering on.. $7,564 raised so far -- well passed our initial goal but the donations have definitely slowed down dramatically since they peak rate after the fundraiser email/newsletter went out.  That's to be expected -- all of the existing fans of the site have by now sent in their donations, and right now we are seeing the slow march of new donors succumbing to our modest charms..

For day 8, DC member Stoic Joker (author of the popular printer tool Page Countster), released a new utility called "(File & Folder) Fix When".  It's a tool for batch updating file data/time stamps:

DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: Stoic Joker's (File & Folder) Fix When
« Last post by mouser on March 08, 2011, 01:22 PM »
Thanks for sharing this

One feature that might be nice is the ability to filter it to only touch files within a certain date range -- that would make it useful for "fixing" bad file/date timestamps.
14048
Here's what i was basically envisioning:

  • A new option to tell CHS to monitor the clipboard for when images are copied to clipboard.
  • Options for max size of files to save, and max age to save them for.
  • When engaged, and a new image is copied to the clipboard, it would be saved in CHS database/images directory, as a standalone file, and an entry added to the clip database referring to this file.
  • At any time you could manually delete files in the database/images directory without harm; maybe some maintenance functions to help prune the image directory.
  • Selecting a clip in the grid with an image would show the image thumbnail in the main clip view; option to show thumbnails in popup quick paste window.
  • Maybe some options for automatically lossily compressing images (or older images).

Clipboard Help+Spell / V2 Beta of Clipboard Help+Spell With Support for Images
« Last post by mouser on March 08, 2011, 11:49 AM »
Ok I may be finally ready to add image support to Clipboard Help+Spell, iff it's something enough people really want.

Since CHS is really focused on handling text clips i recognize that most current users probably don't have image capturing as a top feature need, but i am interested in hearing what people thing about the importance of this feature.  If/when it gets added it will of course be optional.

So, what do you think?

correct.  no need to update at all.
just an attempt to remove some confusion for windows vista/win7 users and users of mirc 7 who were trying to use the previous version installer.
