I'll write down a readme, do some more testing, and wrap it all in one zip file

I just tried it on some of my MemPad files.  These aren't plain text, but they're pretty close.  Text Filter coped with most - but not with the biggest one, which is about 4.5Mb.  Is there a limit in Text Filter, or is it choking on non-text characters?

[Edit 2011-01-28, 20:41] Erm...  Erm...  there isn't a problem opening that file...  never was a problem... I already had it open in MemPad, so it was locked...  Apologies!  :(  :-[  [/Edit]

If you have to set the file mask to All files, should it remember that for next time, rather than reverting to Text files (*.txt)?  Or is that just Windows?

Not sure about this; if you specify more than one string in the search box, could the different strings in the hit list be highlit in different colours?

What do you mean by SAP?  Wikipedia SAP disambiguation page

Do you mean the business software - known at the place I used to work as Stop All Production, because that's what it did for a while?

Site/Forum Features / Re: List of DC-SMF features?

If you want to change font colour, that's a drop-down.  But if you want to change Font Face or Font Size, you get pre-set entries:

Please, what font faces and sizes does DC SMF support?

I'm the nitwit that when looking at storing a list of names, will say to myself, "But what if I want to store a list of names for everyone on the planet? [...] Now... Where am I going to get a complete list of everyone's names..."

General Software Discussion / Re: rename pdf files
« Last post by rjbull on January 27, 2011, 04:15 PM »
The smoothest system I had was when I needed to rename safety data sheets generated by the system used by the company I worked for.  These had structure, so I converted them to text with XPDF, made an AWK script that matched the resulting text file, and ran a batch file that used the output to generate a second temporary batch file that did the renaming.  Then I could just click on the batch file and have the renaming done automatically.  This is, obviously, critically dependent on a particular structure.  If I was dealing with incoming files with no consistent structure, I had to use the kind of tools I listed above.  I have no idea what structure if any your file have, so I can't be more specific, and in any case I'm not a coder.  I just lashed things together.  All I can do is give you an idea of what worked for me.

I'd like more keyboard-friendliness too.  Can't see a keyboard method of expanding/collapsing nodes, for example.
Ctrl-Space for one node, Shift-Ctrl-Space for all nodes. There's a list of shortcuts in the manual (the "manual.nte" file in the program folder).

So there is, now I've unzipped it again.  I had it loaded before, but couldn't see much in it.  Maybe I grunged it.

Thanks!  :)

Not identical, and I'm using Vista Home Premium, but I've never had complete reliability with Red Box Mode and am trying to avoid it.  It isn't very consistent, but SSC tends to lock up and need a process terminator to exit.

How about Noteliner - a simple and traditional pure outliner?

Interesting find, johnk!  But looks to me like it's best for getting the basics of ideas down, less like a tool you'd use to write long documents/books.  The text manipulation features are rudimentary.  I'd like more keyboard-friendliness too.  Can't see a keyboard method of expanding/collapsing nodes, for example.

 • It's freeware - yet clearly well supported, and in fact you can purchase support for $35
Interesting approach, and they appear to have forums which are presumably free.

 • There's a splendid pop-up from the system tray icon that summarises what's waiting in your inboxes, and when the next mail check is due
 • Stats! Gotta love 'em
If you like those features, you'd probably like Poppy, which can do similar things:
    * Checks multiple POP3 accounts for new mail.
    * Uses the taskbar icon to indicate that mail is waiting.
    * A configurable interval between checks of the POP3 account.
    * A a convenient popup menu to reach all functions and configuration.
    * Play a sound when new mail has arrived on any account.
    * Play a different sound for each account.
    * Execute an external program when new mail has arrived.
    * Show a non-interfering popup window when new mail has arrived.
    * Automatically hide the popup window, without user intervention.
    * Always notify or only when new mail has arrived.
    * Always notify or only when mail from a friend has arrived.
    * Dialog to display 'From' address and subject of each message.
    * View the headers of an e-mail message.
    * Preview the source of an e-mail message.
    * Delete e-mail messages from POP3 servers.
    * Select and/or unselect messages based on selection rules.
    * Only notify based on the selection rules.
    * Check e-mail headers against an anti-SPAM DNS blacklist.
    * Option to automatically delete SPAM messages
    * It is small and easy to use.
    * Support for POP3 servers that use SSL (like GMail).

 • After adding a sender to the whitelist, the interface does not update that message to reflect that it's now "good"
Humph.  That could be better.

this requires 1 drag & drop, 1 slide, and 1 click. So a bit more than 1 click

I omitted the drag & drop  ;)  I think I meant, more or less, the equivalent of leaving the slider at the same point next time you enter the program, so that all your output images will be the same size.  Hmmm...  mind going fuzzy...  time I got some sleep...

General Software Discussion / Re: Simple Commandline to send Keystrokes
« Last post by rjbull on January 24, 2011, 04:57 PM »
Looks like NirCmd might be able to do it.  At least, it has "sendkey" type commands, but it doesn't seem to specify a target program or window.

Also looks like AutoHotKey may be able to read text from a file and type it as keystrokes to a program, or, maybe you can use Windows Scripting Host.  However, most of the Google hits appear to refer to sending keystrokes to a command window, not getting them from it.

People want to reduce photos to make them smaller to upload or email (most often).

A one-click system to reduce any size original to a specified size for e-mail/forum posting?

I got fed up with training and re-training Mailwasher, plus other problems with it.  My strategy now is to first run freeware Magic Mail Monitor.  It isn't Bayesian, and you have to constantly update the filters, but I've not found it too onerous so far.  I use TheBat! as e-mail client and have the AntispamSniper plugin for it, Pro version thanks to a DC discount.  There's also a free version.  Pro versions exist for Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail, but not free versions.  AntispamSniper is well-liked on DC.  I'll be interested to hear more about SpamCombat.

Why does it have to be command line?  There's some reason you can't use a macro program like Macro Express or PowerPro?

Thanks, Umberto!

You might want to cross-reference the thread Goodness! Is there NO Win utility to do "DIR /S/B C:\ZZZ\*.JPG > RESULT.TXT"?, specifically mouser's post LS - File List Generator (for Windows).  As LS is under 50k I've attached it below.

If you Firefox, KeeFox

I haven't tried it, though I plan on migrating to Keepass once v6 of Roboform no longer functions with Firefox.

I haven't tried it either, but if I hit a problem with RoboForm, I'm planning to take a look at Password Depot as well.

I installed KeePass, but I was entirely unable to get any browser integration to work at all.

What exactly do you mean by integration with a browser?  I can't (quickly, anyway) see anything about that in their Web Help.

It does have the ability to try to fill in a password form by pressing a hotkey.  Tools > Options > Advanced tab (right hand end), click the Auto-Type button near the bottom right, and you can set the hotkey to make it pop up?  Surely that's not what you meant?
