40hz you didn't say anything inappropriate -- i just thought it might be a good opportunity for me to advocate for why i think people should feel comfortable posting on these kinds of threads recommending their own products, since i know some might be unsure whether they should do so.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best Text Expander software for Windows
« Last post by mouser on March 19, 2011, 02:24 AM »
As a software developer this is an issue that i've had some experience with.. I remember when i first started DC trying to post on a couple of forums about my software and being told to stop "spamming".  And yet if someone else posted about my software it was "thank you for letting us know about some nice new software."   Although I would never do it, it made me realize why so many companies hire people to post about their software and pretend they are just normal users.

So one of the principles we've tried to follow on DC is to say that authors and companies are welcome to post about their software here, as long as they do so in the appropriate place and state their affiliations clearly.

It's also why i think it's important that we welcome companies to post about their software when we have a discussion like "what's the best tool for xxx" or when there is a thread about their software, or in the "announce your software" section.  If it's a place where we would welcome a normal user to tell us why they would use program X, then it should be ok for a company person or the author to tell us why they would, without having to pretend they are not associated with the company.

The only thing we require is disclosure and that they post as humans, rather than copying+pasting some block of text from an advert.

Is it just me, or is some of this thread starting to read like an ad?

Seems to me that if there is a thread about "what's the best tool for.. ?" then the author of one of these tools should feel comfortable explaining why they think theirs is best  :)  Something that might seem like an "advertisement" if posted out of context seems very appropriate on such a thread.

For everyone who donated during the fundraiser put this little badge on your shirt when you next go out to dinner:

We reached our secondary goal and I'm ecstatic about it.  Everyone should feel great about it, and let's try to use this energy and momentum to make the site better in the coming year.

But after some consulting with master Cody on his Himalayan mountain top meditation retreat, I have gone and raised the final fundraiser thermometer goal to the extremely unlikely target of $15,000.

I know what you're thinking:

We have already exceeded our expectations and goals for the fundraiser.. There is no pressure or stress about raising any more money -- anything from here on out is just icing on the cake and extra padding for the nest.

So let's see where we end up!

glad you got it sorted out -- i know those kinds of problems can drive one crazy :)
if you find a web page that explains the problem it might be useful to post it for the next person.

Would it help if I tried to duplicate the problem?

definitely.. but maybe wait for my new version so we can see if it triggers the warning.

well that certainly is troubling.. first time i've heard of it happening.

i think what i'll do as a stopgap, since im not sure yet how this could have happened -- is check how many nodes are about to be deleted and give a secondary confirmation dialog if LBC is about to delete > 5 nodes or so.  at least it should serve as a safeguard and maybe we can use that to spot the problem.

Yay!!

now what? should we extend it to $11k?

Skwire Empire / Re: Birthdays (simple birthday tracking app)
« Last post by mouser on March 18, 2011, 03:13 PM »
I think having ability to make notes is great, BUT i would like to suggest a much simpler more flexible solution.  Instead of giving each entry it's own note, which has some logic but i think would be messy and hard to spot at a glance, can i suggest something much simpler and more straightforward:

A single memo box on the main screen, just a notepad area where one could write whatever notes one wants to keep about birthdays; this might be used to keep general notes and updates and news, and/or a list of addresses, etc.

Whatever minor advantage would be lost by not having a separate note for each entry i think would be made up for by the advantages from simplicity.

Is it possible that it was a display bug and not a deletion bug?  In other words, is it possible that it didn't actually delete anything but the node you asked it to delete, but that it messed up and displayed an empty tree?  The only way to know would be if you closed the configuration dialog, was your dock still there and filled with items?

I think we need to adopt a new rule: you can't receive a new mug (for a new event) until you post a photo with the previous one.

the delay is dynamically calculated based on length of what you type.  i can add an option to tweak it.

Is this pretty much a "whatever you want/are willing/able to do/submit, we'll take" kind of situation? If so I'll assume my CrashPlan review for later in the month is a go.

yep! just tell me a date and i'll pencil you in!

I feel awful that you had to check and uncheck all of those nodes.. As you discovered they are not related to deleting, they are about enabling the items.  Uncheck is kind of like saying to LBC to temporarily pretend like the node isn't there.

So we are back to your issue with deleting ALL nodes!? LBC is usually really paranoid about deleteing stuff -- so i'm having a hard time figuring out how it deleted so many nodes, except possibly if it thought you were trying to delete the parent node.. Let's me do some testes, perhaps it's possible to right click and confuse LBC about which node you wanted to delete.

The thing that strikes me about your screenshot is how close the AnVir Task Manager Pro node is to the top parent "Very Useful" node..

Can i confirm that you wanted to delete AnVir Task Manager, the first child, and the result would be what would happen if LBC thought you wanted to delete "Very Useful" and all of that node's childredn?

Official Announcements / Fundraiser Day 17
« Last post by mouser on March 17, 2011, 02:20 PM »
It's day 17 of the fundraiser.. It's about that time when I wonder if anyone reads these little updates.  Regardless, the show goes on!

EDIT:  I've been told to not make the damn fundraiser updates so damn depressing! POINT TAKEN!  :)

There's nothing to be depressed about the fundraiser -- we're doing great and nearly at the goal line!!  I didn't mean to suggest the fundraiser wasn't going well -- I just meant that people were probably getting sick of my daily boring fundraiser updates.  But I shall adopt a less somber tone from here on out I promise.

And if you want to join us in more celebratory cheering about the fundraiser, join us on this thread which is active and which everyone is welcome to post on!

For today, DC member wraith808 wrote a very cool round up of software tools useful to people traditional pen-and-paper running role playing games.  If that's something of interest to you, check out "https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=26088.0".

Awesome post.  I'm going to have to look at some of these in more detail.  Although I don't really play these kinds of games, i'm always interested in these tools from the point of view of game creation.

All of FARR's settings are in an ini file, FindAndRunRobot.ini which will be in program directory on XP or in portable mode, or in a subdirectory of your documents directory on VISTA and later.

If you've configured any special aliases they will be in Aliases/Custom/MyAliases.alias
And if you've configured the toolbar you'll find that configuration in FindAndRunUserToolbar.ini
