Official Announcements / Re: Server - Apache problem running out of memory
« Last post by mouser on April 19, 2011, 12:41 PM »
SoftLayer's handling of the issue has been horrible and at this point I wouldn't feel at all comfortable recommending them to anyone as a hosting solution.  In the past i've recommended SoftLayer on the basis that they may be more expensive, but they are more stable and reliable.  But this experience has turned all of that around.

ps. we set maxclients to 21 now to see if that helps.. though it seems to have slowed down web access to the server substantially.

Official Announcements / Server - Apache problem running out of memory
« Last post by mouser on April 19, 2011, 12:57 AM »
I'm not sure how accurate my description of this problem is going to be, but we seem to have a problem on the new server which has caused the server to crash occasionally.  It seems to have to do with running out of memory from Apache processes.

In truth, it's hard for me to even write about the server software that is the backbone of our entire culture without flying into a screaming rage about how incredibly horrible all of it is designed and how it's virtually impossible to figure out what goes wrong and why and how impossible it is to configure this stuff to work well under load.  But hey, it's just the software that powers millions of web sites and servers and runs the entire internet, so why should it matter if it is complete crap.

But anyway.. the best solution we can think of is maybe to set apache maxclients to something like 21 and hope this will keep the server from running out of memory.

Does anyone have any better ideas?  We upgraded the server when we moved to 8gb but the use of vmware to host multiple servers seems to be really taking a toll on available memory.

We never had this problem on the old server.. I'm not sure why we are having it now.

I'm also not sure if this is related to the random but persistent problem we are having with the server (especially member server) timing out on some downloads, or failing with partial files.

Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.

Intelligence (2006), a canadian cop+criminal tv series like "The Wire":

Screenshot - 4_18_2011 , 9_40_24 PM_thumb.png

http://movies.netfli...ntelligence/70153374

2 seasons, about 20 hours in total.

A Canadian version of The Wire using people you'd recognize from da Vinci's Inquest and Battlestar Galactica. Intelligence is an engrossing crime drama told from the point of view of both the ambitious feds (they call them "Horsemen" for the Mounted Police in the White North) and the successful but challenged organized criminals. Like the Wire, Intelligence is talky in a rapid fire way that requires you to play close attention to each scene. Miss a couple of short scenes while you go for snacks and you'll be lost. Also like The Wire, it respects its audience to feed them realistic characters and situations. You get to follow along closely with the double dealing office politics of the feds, the shrewd confidence games of the crims, and the arrogant incompetents in both camps who keep everybody off balance and in danger. Meanwhile, everybody's got issues with their ex-wives or ex-husbands. This is one of those shows that pulls you in so deeply into the lives of the characters that the time just flies.

and for ultimate flexibility, dont forget you can tell chs about external scripts to run, written in perl, python, etc.

there is no current way to do it, but it could be added pretty easily.  a question is -- how do these apps want multiple files to be specified? as additional commandline arguments?
13688
ah i never knew about that option.

it opens windows explorer?

the options for what happens after capture are on two tabs of preferences: "Interface Options 1 (top left After Capture Show)" , and "Post-Capture Options" entire tab.

Let us know what option it was causing the behavior.

gothic, the dc server admin, is a SERIOUS flight sim guy.  i'll pass this to him.

Was this happening before the servers went over to VMs?

not nearly as often, but yes.. in fact it was.  which i think is a real clue.
and it's also what makes me think it's not hardware, since this server is only totally different hardware.

Actually the "best" thing in that surprise box is not in the photos -- it was a set of cards and box so that you can start using my index card system of getting organized.

No in this case im speaking as an end user -- if you think you a forum is going to be an important part of your website, don't even THINK about using the druapl forum system.

It might still be reasonable to use drupal as your CMS and bridge to another true forum system, but don't even think about using the drupal forum system, it's unbelievably bad.

Living Room / Re: What's your approach to this help desk procedure issue?
« Last post by mouser on April 14, 2011, 10:42 AM »
what stoic said.

When the number of support people/clients go past a certain point ... The ticket system is required.

I tend to approach all of these kinds of issues with the same philosophy, that there is almost always an overhead mental cost to be paid in complexity, and that when you only have one or two people handling support, the more minimalist the approach the better.  If you are a sole developer, you might be attracted to the formality and logic of having a ticketing system for example.  But as logical as it might seem, there's a good chance that the additional layer of complexity is just not worth it and is more of a pain and distraction than anything.

However, as soon as you start adding more people to your organization.. in fact as soon as you have a company where any given request for help might be handled by two different people, then a formal ticket system starts becoming worth it.

That is really odd.. I may have to build a special debug version to report why it is deciding to do what it is doing..  Is there anything unusual about your multiple monitor system? are the monitors set at very different resolutions? (not that that should matter).

It's odd because LBC is specifically designed to work well on multi-monitor systems, and i myself have 4 monitors and windows XP, and LBC works on any monitor.

I hate to do this because it is in many ways unfair to say this without going into details, but i have to say after working with drupal several times now i have to warn people to stay away from it -- it is truly a painful horrible thing to work with.

But each time i decide to give drupal another chance my experience is worse than the last.

Recently i'm working with the drupal forum system and i have to say it is one of the worst, hardest to use, most confusing, least functional, poorly designed forum systems ever designed.  By a large margin.  Stay away from drupal.
