Living Room / Re: Anyone here using a standing desk?
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2011, 09:17 AM »
A friend who saw the photo told me that to complete the setup I should make a low chair and put my old chair on top of it.

I just want to ignore my browser when Passpack is in the title bar.
ah that's different; but yeah i could add that.
13528
See if you can identify what triggers these remaining problems.
13529
(I don't want CH+S to snag clips from Passpack)
you can exclude applications.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Is CHS 2.00.01 out of Beta ?
« Last post by mouser on May 06, 2011, 02:28 PM »
So I guess that the new version modifies the database structure in a way that makes the database incompatible with previous versions ...
right.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Is CHS 2.00.01 out of Beta ?

It's still in beta, but it's safe to install and use from now on.  Just don't try to go backwards.
13533
I would user it

go ahead and user it!
13534
Those ideas sound useful but definitely sound like they would be better handled by a 3rd party tool.
13535
not a bad idea.  maybe the easiest universal solution would be a function that would let you put in a regular expression, and would extract all matches as new clips.
13536
I also am in the camp that is deeply distrustful of garbage collection in all but specialized cases.  I understand that it can be incredibly useful and helpful in many cases, but i find it unacceptable when a language doesn't have a way for me to *easily* take responsibility for explicitly allocated and freeing object memory.

Memory may be relatively abundant but it's not infinite.  For those of us who occasionally work on projects that need to use as much memory as they possibly can get access to, not being able to control or predict memory use is unacceptable.

This reminds me of one of my pet peeves -- the C++ standard library (and others like Boost) are heavily focused on creating very "optimal" algorithms for sorting, representing trees, graphs, dictionaries, etc.  And you can find elaborate discussions about runtime performance in best/avg/worst case scenarios for these algorithms, etc.  But almost no one ever spends any time looking at or reporting the memory use efficiency, and none of the classes or algorithms has any way to report to you how much memory they are actually using.  Not cool.

Living Room / Re: College Recommendations?
« Last post by mouser on May 05, 2011, 10:42 PM »
I don't have any specific recommendations, only a very general one: Decide what you want to get out of the experience and focus like a laser on that goal, and don't let yourself get too distracted by distractions or the enjoyment of the process.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Scrolling capture is not working
« Last post by mouser on May 05, 2011, 06:03 PM »
I have been remiss in not updating the scrolling window capture code.. I have been working on another of my programs lately (Clipboard Help+Spell) and will get back to Screenshot Captore very soon.  Can I ask what program you are trying to do a scrolling capture from?

It was suggested that the CodyCards could use the numbers values repeated in the upper left, so i added a helper function for this into the JrPythonCards library:

New version has been uploaded.

you are correct, they haven't been posted yet, though you can enter the giveaway for them.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Clipboard Help+Spell Screencasts
« Last post by mouser on May 05, 2011, 03:04 PM »
is there some way of quickly pasting first a clip and then the URL it was clipped from? Give me that, and I may defect from ClipMate!

no there isn't; that's a good point.. i'd have to add that.

It's hard for me to imagine a cooler toy to get your child to encourage them to learn how to program.

The Finch is a new robot for computer science education. Its design is the result of a four year study at Carnegie Mellon's CREATE lab. The Finch is made to easily integrate into high school and college CS courses. Institutions piloting the Finch have shown improved retention and year-over-year enrollment growth in their CS1 courses.

The Finch was designed to allow students to write richly interactive programs. On-board features include:
  • Light, temperature, and obstacle sensors
  • Accelerometers
  • Motors
  • Buzzer
  • Full-color beak LED
  • Pen mount for drawing capability
  • Plugs into USB port - no batteries required
  • The Finch is currently programmable with Java and Python. Additional language support will be released throughout 2011.

Newsletter for May 5th, 2011
"Calming Breeze"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Warmer weather and tornadoes seem to signal the beginning of summer in the Midwest, and it's time for another DC newsletter.  Since we last spoke the fundraiser wrapped up, with a whopping $14,239 donated by over 600 individual donors -- a huge success and enough to cover our hosting and administrative fees for the next two years.  Hooray! A giant thank you to everyone who donated, and cheered us on during the fundraiser and especially to those coders and writers on the forum who helped us make the fundraiser month something special.  And if you somehow missed the fundraiser don't forget that we accept donations year round.

Things have been understandably a little less raucous for the last month following the fundraiser -- so this will be a short newsletter.  And it woud be a great time for some of you first posters to introduce yourself on the forum or ask a question:

2. Software Updates

One of the prizes awarded during the fundraiser was some allocated programming hours by me on a project of the winner's choosing.  DC member Cranioscopical won and requested that I finally add image capture support to my clipboard tool (Clipboard Help+Spell).  I must admit I have been having fun adding the feature, and you'll find a new BETA release of CHS available for download with image capturing support working quite well.  You'll also find a link below to the new evolution of my Flipbook Printer program, called Flipbook Printer Suite 2.0 -- with full support for recording video in addition to printing flipbooks.

3. Discounts and Giveaways

Members of our forum frequently reach out to shareware companies and arrange software discounts and give-aways.  In addition, forum members are always on the lookout for discounts that they find on the web and they love to share with the rest of us.

This Month's Special Discounts and Giveaways:

4. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out..

5. Fun, Humour and Amusements on the Web

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out the lighter side of the forum - humour, videos, and games..

6. Announce Your Software/Service/Product

Sometimes coders announce their software (freeware and shareware) on our site; here are some announcements made in the last month or so:

7. Software Discussion

Here you'll find some of the standout discussions that have been started since the last newsletter about specific software applications.

8. Developer's Corner

The title of this section shouldn't scare you off - there is definitely something of interest for everyone here! It's more than just a section for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial ideas, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active recently.

9. Hardware Hideout

We tend to focus on websites and software on the forum, but that doesn't mean that DC forum members aren't always on the lookout for cool new gadgets and information on maximizing their computer's performance.

ProcessTamer / Re: Periodically re-apply force settings
« Last post by mouser on May 05, 2011, 11:47 AM »
This is actually a very good request -- for efficiency PT does not re-check process priorities after it sets them.  I will add an option to let it do so periodically as you requested srothkin.
13547
Is there a way for me to specify where this file is kept so I don't run into this problem?

yep!  just edit the ConfigDir.ini file in a text editor and you should be all set.  Let us know.

tsaint,

Very good observation, however as a good statistician you must remember that we are not analyzing a static situation, and a situation at time T may be different than a situation at time T+1.

So after the first post at time T, your total contribution to the thread may have a high probability of being useful at time T.

But after 10 posts at time t+10, your total contribution to the thread may be judged to be MUCH less likely to be useful at time T+10.

Though I will concede that this does mean that people who decide to leave the forum and boycott it after your first post will be immune from your further rantings and will not experience the decaying of your usefulness.  I suppose this creates a practical floor on the usefulness of any given person, since people will stop reading the thread at some point.
